The 25th Anniversary of 101 by Depeche Mode (And Why it Still Hurts)

DSC01638 (2) (1280x1280)

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Depeche Mode’s 101 concert, held on June 18th, 1988 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.  It was the last stop of their Music for The Masses tour, and although I had already gone to a show during that tour in San Diego, I needed to attend this one because it was announced this would be a very special concert filmed by D.A. Pennebaker, the same director of U2’s Rattle and Hum.  It proved to be a great show because Thomas Dolby and OMD were set to open.  As a devoted fan, of course I bought a ticket straight away and was all ready to go.  But because of traditional Filipino superstitions, my mom and dad were afraid of my travelling to see a show right before a big event: my high school graduation.  Needless to say, they vetoed my trip.  I begged, pleaded, wrote heart-felt letters and cried, but to no avail.  I ended up selling my ticket to my friend Aaron, who said that if my situation ever changed I could just say the word and the ticket was mine again.  Aaron, along with my friends Robby and Brad even made a last-ditch effort to come by my house on the way up to Pasadena to convince my parents to let me go, but they just couldn’t be swayed.  I found out later that the most casual of Depeche Mode fans from my high school were there.  I truly felt like everyone went, except for me.

I listened longingly to 91X that day, hearing updates and live feeds from the Rose Bowl, wishing I was listening to updates by Richard Blade on KROQ for the real deal.  I silently roamed around the house like I was lost.  Finally, my mom convinced me to go shopping, and she bought me several Depeche Mode records and CDs, all to satiate me but it just wasn’t enough.  My fate was sealed, and I would not be a part of history in the making.

DSC01639 (2) (1280x1024)

For someone who relives those moments at odd times, like when we’re driving on the 101 in Los Angeles, I sure have quite a bit of memorabilia of that day.  I think Robby brought me back the shirt pictured above.  Later when the movie was complete, I still went to a showing here in San Diego because I still wanted to be a part of it, even thought I wasn’t really a part of it originally.  I had strategically placed Depeche Mode stickers all over the back of my little red Honda Civic hatchback back then, and returned from the movie to love notes with phone numbers from other fangirls, who I’m sure hoped the car belonged to some cool British guy.  I should have had one of my guy friends call them back for shits and giggles, but I wasn’t that cruel at that time.  In fact, I suppose I could have lied to my parents back then as well, telling them I was just going to hang out with friends and just went to the concert, but I was just too innocent and honest back then.

DSC01641 (2) (1280x1280)

So here I am, 25 years later, still a bit bitter.  I think it’s why I made sure to have my name in the Talk Talk book and in the liner notes of Cy Curnin’s new album, because it makes up for not being a part of one of the biggest moments in Depeche Mode’s history.  I mentioned in a previous post (here) why I didn’t pick the Music for The Masses tour as one of my favorites because of the 101 concert being a sore spot for me.  Despite the sting in my brooding heart, I have included the set list of the San Diego date of the Music for the Masses tour, which I believe emulates the 101 concert.  I just noticed Just Can’t Get Enough is not in the second encore of the San Diego show, but it is in the 101 concert CD and movie.  They also played Somebody for the 101 concert, but they didn’t play it for the San Diego show.

I know it reads like sad memory, but it really is just a vivid memory.  It’s amazing what you can recall when there is enough emotion behind it, even when it’s 25 years later.

The Children of 80’s Teenagers

Bubba and Mama in Joy Division

Growing up in the 80’s, it would be fitting that my sister and I should have our children dress accordingly.  Or, at the very least, wear shirts of our favorite groups from the 80’s.  As if on cue, Dominic decided the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were among his favorite superheroes (just like daddy) and he likes The Best of The Human League (he can find the album on my iPod without assistance).  Dominic can sing nearly all the words to the Royskopp version of “Puppets” and if you ask him, he can tell you mama’s favorite group is Depeche Mode, all of which tickles the soul of my inner 80’s teen.  Who knows, maybe Mei-Lin will like Jem and the Holograms?  I think she’ll stick to Hello Kitty for now.

Of course Dominic has a Depeche Mode shirt. Was there any doubt?

Depeche Mode Live: Jimmy Kimmel & The Troubadour!

DSC00880 (2) (1280x960)

I had to move part two of my Record Store Day post to bring exciting news:  Depeche Mode will be playing today on Jimmy Kimmel Live (which will air tonight), and then The Troubadour on Friday April 26, 2013 in Los Angeles!  The Jimmel Kimmel Live show is the second time they’ve appeared, and The Troubadour show will be the smallest venue Depeche Mode have ever played in LA.  I’ve been to The Troubadour twice: I went with my beautiful friend Trudy to see Ray LaMontagne, and I worked the merchandise table for The Push Stars.  It’s been ages since I’ve been there, and I hope and pray that I will win tickets to see this intimate show.  If I won, I will definitely post pictures and give a concert review.  If you would like a chance to get tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime event, you can enter at KROQ’s official site here.  Good luck to all!

Weekend in Pictures: Record Store Day Finds

DSC01019 (2) (1280x1279)

As I mentioned in last Friday’s post, Saturday was Record Store Day.  In celebration of the day, CC (of the blog Pink Candles at Ridgemont High) and I went on our “Record Store Crawl”.  We combined indie record store shopping with good eats inbetween and had a fab time doing it!  I’ll start off with our finds, and part two will be about our food adventures.  Just as a teaser, below is a picture of how we started our morning: coffee and donuts from San Diego’s Donut Bar in Downtown, along with publications and maps of how we would plan out our day of record store hopping.  Also pictured are my 45 RPM adapter earrings (original post here) and my wallet from PopKiller.  I wore the earrings with my Sub Pop t-shirt.  Coincidentally, CC wore her 45 RPM adapter necklace (her post showcasing her necklace here), and we both received compliments throughout the day on our accessory choices.  Part of the reason that this trip was fun was because CC and I both discovered that we used to frequent the now defunct Blue Meanie Records back in the 80’s, which was one of the few places one could get imported records, magazines, pins and memorabilia because the owner used to travel to Europe on a regular basis.  I’m sure we were in Blue Meanie at the same time at some point in our teen years.

Because we started our day off so early (7:30am to line up for Donut Bar), our first stop was the San Diego Record Show at The Center.  The doors opened at 9am and we paid a $5 admission to get in.  The San Diego Record Show is a collection of independent vendors (some are store owners) selling or swapping their musical merchandise under one roof.  Most of the items are vinyl 45s and LPs, but we found CDs, DVDs, shirts, pins and even video and cassette tapes.

My first purchase was at the Record Show was from Akashic Records.  I had a wonderful and interesting discussion with David, the vendor and owner, which led to him recommending some reading material about blogging.  I ended up purchasing that Wire Train album pictured for only $4!

RSD 2013 Finds Collage 3My next purchase was five badges (pins to us Yanks) and that fantastic piece of vinyl: Joy Division’s second album, Closer from Gary (who owns Third Eye Record Shop).  The label says “1st US press on translucent brown vinyl”.  Now I have to find Unknown Pleasures.  CC found some pins to give to her daughter, and if I recall, she also bought a New Edition album for her nephew.

RSD 2013 Finds Collage 4We saw an old school cassette tape player, and I think we used to have that when I was in elementary.  I then bought those Joy Division DVDs from Steve, who is an independent vendor.

RSD 2013 Finds Collage 5My final purchase was from Mr. Skid Roper.  If you remember, he and Mojo Nixon used to make beautiful music together back in the 1980’s.  The vendor a couple of tables before Skid’s had a bunch of oldies, and I asked if they had anything by Timi Yuro (for my mum).  They said no, but when I came to Skid’s section, I found a 45 within about five minutes, and only for $1!

DSC01011 (2) (1280x1280)

Our second stop was Groovy Records, which was probably just a few blocks away (I’m directionally challenged, so it may have been more, but it only took us about 5 minutes to get there by car).  When we parked, I didn’t even see the building, but CC pointed out that it was in an odd intersection, so we decided to park on a different block and walk there.  Once inside, we hit the dollar bins, then I hit up the New Wave/Punk section (I have found that these genres often get lumped together).  I loved the juxtaposition of the Public Image Ltd and Cramps posters next to the Country & Western section.  My dollar find was Live and Let Dance by The Untouchables.  I have the 45 single to “What’s Gone Wrong” which is from the same album.  As we were making our purchases, a camera man from KUSI walked in to shoot some footage.  I completely forgot to watch the news that day to see what they had filmed.  Also, the very first image in this post is from a sticker on Groovy Records’ entrance door.

RSD 2013 Finds Collage 6

Next, we attempted to go to M-Theory Music, but saw that the line went around the block.  Not willing to wait that long, we decided to head to Pacific Beach to Cow Records, because CC knew where we could grab some lunch and dessert within walking distance.  Have I mentioned how fantastically awesome it is to have a food blogger as a friend?  I’ll go into more detail about the food in my next post.  After lunch, we headed over to Thrift Trader, which I thought was just a thrift clothing store.  Inside, I saw they also had records, CDs and DVDs as well.  I didn’t look through the music as much as I looked through the clothing.  I found a couple of t-shirts and CC found a couple of shirts, so we pulled our finds together to make the $20 for four items.  It’s great that she loves a good vintage or thrift store find as much as I do!

RSD 2013 Finds Collage 7RSD 2013 Finds Collage 8We when walked next door to Cow Records, where I found many of the Record Store Day exclusives that were on the list on their official site (a few of them are pictured below).  I also found a bootleg Depeche Mode live album called Innocent and Vain (pictured above).  That title truly made me laugh.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted it, so I browsed through what they had in their Depeche Mode section, and found I had everything there except for the bootleg.  I decided against the bootleg album and instead looked around for the Sub Pop RSD compilation, which they didn’t have.  I ended up buying two Depeche Mode stickers for my car and I believe CC bought a DVD.

Still wanting the Sub Pop compilation, I checked Lou’s Records Facebook page and they mentioned that they still had quite a few RSD exclusives, so I posted a comment asking if they had the Sub Pop compilation still available.  They responded that they did, which then prompted a phone call to their store.  I asked them if they could save me a copy and that I would be in the following day to pick it up.  By the time this posts, I should have a copy in hand.  Ah Lou’s Records, you never let me down!  The last couple of pictures are all my finds for the day.  Hope you had a great weekend!

Welcome to the Delta Machine

DSC00880 (2) (1280x960)

Depeche Mode’s newest offering Delta Machine came out last Tuesday, and I snapped up a copy of the deluxe booklet version straight away.  As would any avid fan, I had very high hopes for this album, even after hearing “Angel” on YouTube during that early preview and then their first single “Heaven”.  I had mixed feelings about both songs, mainly because of the tempo.  Is a slower tempo song the right choice as a first single?  “Heaven” grew on me after some time and I now enjoy the song.  It’s got a bit of that soulful gospel feel to it, a bit like “Condemnation” without being so much like an anthem.

It wasn’t until after I heard the album a few runs through that I read the booklet and saw that Dave Gahan had quite a bit of contribution to the songwriting this go around.  In fact, he wrote one of my favorites called “Broken”.  I kept trying to find that “Depeche Mode sound” that I’ve come to know and love, and I think four songs embody that for me from Delta Machine “Welcome To My World”, “Broken”, “Soft Touch/Raw Nerve” and the newest single, “Soothe My Soul”.  Other than “Welcome To My World” each of these songs seem to reach back and bring a little of some old Depeche Mode forward.

When I heard the song and read the lyrics to “Welcome To My World,” all I could think was “How very ‘Fifty Shades’!”  In fact, I could actually hear that song on the soundtrack to a “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie.  Check out these lyrics below (uh, Christian Grey anyone?  I think so):

And if you stay awhile

I’ll penetrate your soul

I’ll bleed into your dreams

You’ll want to lose control

I’ll weep into your eyes

I’ll make your visions sing

I’ll open endless skies

And ride your broken wings

Welcome to my world

I’ve read a critique that the lyrics to “Welcome to my World” are a bit dramatic, but it fits right in with the music.  It has a slow and sexy drive, not at raw as “Wrong” from Sounds of the Universe, but just as groovy.  It has that beckoning and tempo building that I’ve come to like in their later endeavors.

As stated above, my third favorite song is “Broken” written by Dave Gahan and Kurt Uenala.  I feel like Dave has stepped up his writings skills and has developed a sound that fits right in with Depeche Mode’s constantly developing sound.  It’s very ethereal and quite lovely, giving me the same feeling musically as “Precious” from Playing the Angel.

DSC00879 (2) (1280x912)

“Soft Touch/Raw Nerve” comes in as a close second of my favorite songs.  This is one that will sound fantastic in concert because it was meant to be played in a large arena over booming speakers.  The lyrics are easy to sing aloud and will be fun to sing along with Dave live and should have fans dancing in the aisles in concert.

Finally, “Soothe My Soul” is the song that I have been waiting to hear from my Basildon boys.  This is Depeche Mode incarnate.  This is “I Feel You” mixed with “Personal Jesus”, “It’s No Good” and “World in My Eyes”.  This song sent shivers down my spine because I knew this was that new Depeche Mode song that I was looking forward to.  Great song, and great choice for the next single.  Oh, and have you seen the video?  It kind of reminds me a bit of some Recoil footage from “A Strange Hour in Budapest”.  Very sensual, check it out below.

This album has got me so excited for their concert in September (by the time this posts, I should already have tickets).  If/when I hear these four songs live, I will consider anything else as icing on a very damn good cake.
