San Diego Style Bloggers: Recap of the Beauty Blogger Workshop at Bellus Academy

Beauty Blogger Workshop 2014 Collage 4

To quote the charismatic actor Matthew McConaughey:  “Alright, alright, alright!”  Here is my recap of the San Diego Style Bloggers at Bellus Academy in Poway.  Along with yummy desserts, coffee and goodie bags, it was a fun day filled with learning all about wonderful beauty tips for hair, make-up and nails.  I arrived a bit late, so I came in during the hair styling demonstration given by stylist Erik Thrane.  He did an amazing updo style. While pinning up the model’s hair, he mentioned that a good way to keep one’s hair pinned up securely was to weave the hair into the bobby pin, then pin it up into the hair.

After the hair styling session came a wonderful makeup demonstration by artist Marina Estrella.  She gave so many useful tips.  For instance, she explained that for mature skin (like myself), avoid shimmer and don’t do full coverage.  Instead, mix color with moisturizer to give a more satin look rather than matte.  A tip I used pretty much right away was regarding applying lip color: put the majority of the lip color while your mouth is relaxed, then smile to place the rest of the color.  My favorite tip of the day: “Blending is everything.  Blending is the secret of life…”  This is something I will carry with me forever!

The last demonstration of the day was nail art by Ally Caraveo.  The entire time she spoke, she painted the nails you will see in the middle picture below.  She stated she draws her inspiration from street art, graffiti, and tattoos.  Wherever she draws her inspiration, it results in something incredible!  Then the Director Of Spa Nails, Trudy Reynolds (pictured with Director of Community Relations, Leilani Angel), gave us some information regarding shellac and what it means in relation to nail care.  This truly was a lovely event presented by Be Social PR, and our hosts at Bellus Academy were perfect!

Nail Art Galore at Born Pretty

Born Pretty Store Website (2) (1111x880)

I’m ending this week of nails with an awesome new site I was recently introduced to called Born Pretty.  Anything you can think of related to nail art, polish, tools and care can be found on this site.  The folks at Born Pretty asked me to choose three products to review (pictured below), and I’m very excited to try them out.  Stay tuned next week as I really get creative with some awesome nail art, and have a wonderful weekend!

Summertime Nails

Loved these nail stickers by Kiss.  They lasted longer than 10 days!

I’m playing a bit of catch up with posts, so they will float between posts I meant to put up and posts that were put up to be timely with recent events.  These are just some of the nail colors and stickers I’ve worn so far this summer.  Hope you all had a great weekend!

I know it’s difficult to tell with this picture, but this lovely nude color called “Quick Sand” by Sally Hansen has a bit of glitter in it.

This is the color I’m currently wearing:  “Paying With Platinum” by Spoiled from Wet n Wild.  They completely remind me of Miista’s iridescent shoes.  Miista agreed on my Instagram!

I wore these Maybelline Color Show nail stickers called “Sapphire Jewels” to a recent wedding (post here).  Lovely, but definitely were meant to be worn for one day.

Definitely my favorite nail stickers of the bunch, Salon Effects “Checkin’ It Twice” by Sally Hansen.  These also lasted over 10 days, but I kept forgetting to take pictures of my nails!  If I find them again, I’ll be sure to get pictures.  SO my style!

Nails Did & Done

Dominatrix (brand unknown); Ring set, a gift from my niece

There are times where I go through long dry spells where I’m just too lazy to get a manicure, either at home or at the salon.  Since my last mani-pedi with my niece for Mother’s Day (first picture above), I’ve overcome my manicure embargo after I purchased an adorable travel manicure set I found at CVS.  Coincidentally, I also discovered they had a great beauty sale, showcasing a selection of polishes by Sally Hansen and Wet N Wild on the cheap, with prices ranging from $.99 to $2.99.  I stocked up on quite a few colors (not all are pictured here), which means I can get my nails “did” more often!

Co-Bolt Blue by Sally Hansen & Trust Fund Baby by Spoiled/Wet N Wild

Gone Grey by Sally Hansen & Explosions After Dark by Spoiled/Wet N Wild; “F” ring by Wendy Brandes (from her swear ring set seen here); Color combination & ring inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey

The Parking Meteor Has Expired & Trust Fund Baby by Spoiled/Wet N Wild (the darker polish is black with an amazing green glitter tint)
