Bonne Bouffe à Bo-Beau

DSC01200 (2) (1280x1280)

Merci again to Bing Translator for the translation of the title of my post (I used the same translator for my post about Paris last summer).  It should roughly translate to “Great Food at Bo-Beau”.  This is another catch-up restaurant post from a dinner out with Janice and Regi.  We’re always ready to try out new places, and Regi heard Bo-Beau in Ocean Beach was a great new French bistro.  We have had great luck with French cuisine, so Janice and I trusted Regi with her choice.  We had been to this location before when it was Thee Bungalow.  I remember that night well because it was when I announced to Regi for the first time I was pregnant (Janice had found out the week prior).  Now, here we are five years later at the same location, but different restaurant.

Already I fell in love with the locks on the grid right outside of the entrance.  It reminded me of Pont de l’Archevêché (Archbishop’s Bridge) in Paris from my trip last summer with Janice.  We both said at Bo-Beau that we should have bought padlocks and placed them on the bridge out there. C’est la vie!  The interior reminded me of a little place my husband and I had dinner at, also in Paris.  It was a tiny bistro where we knew only locals frequented because it was quite tucked away and accessed by unpaved roads that were down the street from our hotel.  With this kind of atmosphere, I expected and anticipated only great things once we were ready to have dinner!

Janice arrived about 20 minutes after I did, so Regi and I started off with drinks and an appetizer.  Both drinks reminded me of creations at Callooh Callay in London and were très fantastique.  The Charcuterie Board appetizer was very simple, but quite filling and great for more than two people.  Once Janice arrived, we ordered our dinners.  As usual, we made sure to order different dishes for sampling purposes.  I’m glad we waited because Janice and I nearly ordered the same dish, which was the Mac n Cheese.  That allowed me to order the Burger Royale with Cheese, and I made sure to add the fried egg.  Regi ordered from the Moules & Frites menu (mussels and fries).  I thoroughly enjoyed my burger, which I can safely say was the best restaurant burger I have ever had.  I loved the pork belly patty with the fried pancetta, but loved it even more with the fried egg.  The fries were cooked with rosemary and the aioli sauce completely complimented them.

We ended our food love-fest with the Ménage à Trois for dessert, which prompted a flurry of funny posts on Facebook that I won’t share here.  My two favorite parts of the dessert involved chocolate, which is not normally the case.  I was pleasantly surprised that the peanut butter brittle was light, crisp and sweet and went wonderfully with the chocolate ganache, so it was like a really fancy Butterfinger.  Just the mention of “sea salt caramel house made marshmallow” made the Amaretto pot de crème already sound absolutely delicious and did not disappoint.  The cheesecake was more tart than I’m used to, but the fresh fruit atop took the edge off.

After telling my husband about Bo-Beau, he wants to head out there to enjoy the Burger Royale in person, while I try the Brown Butter Gnocchi.  Hopefully they will still have the Strawberry Shortcake on their dessert menu because I really was torn between that and the Ménage à Trois.  I guess Bo-Beau has secured a future visit, and I promise to wear better shoes than I did that night because parking is at a premium in that area.  Overall, delicious dining in a lovely French inspired atmosphere.  Bon Appétit!

Journées Européennes de Vacances 5 et 6: Bonjour Paris!

Bonjour and merci Bing Translator (formerly Babelfish) for the translation of the title of my post!  If you haven’t guessed, it should translate to “European Vacation Days 5 & 6: Hello Paris!”

Photo from the train entering France.

August 20th and 21st, we spent in Paris, France.  Although I would loved to have spent my entire trip in London, Janice brought up a great point that we should see one other country while in Europe.  Although I had already been there because my husband and I went on our honeymoon, we figured the easiest jaunt to another country was to take the two-hour Chunnel through Eurostar to Paris.  I tried to sleep, but instead spent the entire ride listening to Spandau Ballet because of the Rewind Festival the night before.  We actually arrived at Gare du Nord (North Station), but Janice booked a room at the Mercure Hotel location that was walking distance from Gare de l’est (East Station), which was close by.

The Mercure Hotel on Boulevard Magenta.

I’ll again rely on my pictures to tell the story of where we went in Paris for the two days that we were there.  It was quite the fleeting trip, because I tried to make sure that Janice saw all of the most popular of sights during our short stay.  The best part about the trip for me was the food, which I enjoyed because we actually got to sit awhile at each little cafe.  À la prochaine!  Next post:  Our last day in London!

Our arrival at Gare du Nord, a street sign close to our hotel, and our first stop on The Metro.

Janice’s first introduction to authentic crepes in Paris.  This one was filled with Nutella and bananas.

We took pictures outside of The Louvre because we were too late to take a proper tour (and we couldn’t go the next day because it was closed).

Jardin des Tuileries, which is the Tuileries Garden, between The Louvre and Palace de la Concorde.

We saw something being filmed while walking around the streets of Paris, close by The Louvre.

A cool Metro station entrance.

The cafe where we ate breakfast each day we were in Paris. Our waitress was so sweet that she made sure to warn us about pick-pockets, and she loved my Wendy Brandes ring!

Some of the delicious food and wine we ate and drank while in Paris: creme brule, pino grigio, eclairs and Quiche Lorraine.

This is the awesome bakery where I bought the eclairs.  Janice bought some kind of Nutella goodness.

Marché Saint-Quentin (St. Quentin Market), which was right outside our hotel. If you watched “Cars 2”, you’ll know why it’s funny that Lightning McQueen was in the market!

Notre Dame de Paris

We stopped at a cafe near the Seine river, while walking to the Eiffel Tower. Janice and I were trying to be artsy with our pictures at the cafe.  I liked her’s the best!

I was so excited to find the little Irish pub that my husband and I visited during our honeymoon!  I knew it was the right one because it was next to the soccer shop where the nice store owner gave us a free key chain.  The gal that was bartending at the time introduced us to the music of the group Phoenix.

Tour de Eiffel

Arc de Triomphe and the Louis Vuitton store on Champs Elysees.  The “love me” painted on the wall caught my eye while walking.

Across the Pond: Our London Trip is Confirmed!

Picadilly Circus, London, 2008 – Photo by Cyrillynn

I know I have been talking about this for sometime, but everything is confirmed and set for our trip to London!  As mentioned, I’m going to travel across the pond with my best friend, Janice on August 15th of this year.  Because of wonderful service we received and the fantastic price, we’ll be staying at the same Premier Inn that my husband and I stayed at the last two trips to England, which is literally five minutes from Wembley Stadium.  Also, we are flying British Airways because they now fly directly out of San Diego.  Since Janice has never been to Europe before, in addition to hitting all of the London tourist spots, we are also planning to take a little side trip to Paris (*fingers crossed*).  Janice has been sending me texts with a countdown, which prompted me to add a cute little countdown to this post and to my sidebar.

Daisypath Vacation tickers

Keeping true to my fashionista inner goddess, I’ve also started thinking about what I’m going to wear, because I know we’ll be doing quite a bit of walking.  I’ve mostly got flats slated for our trip, but I’ve got a pair of low-heeled ankle boots and a pair of flatforms that I’m going to be sporting as well.  I definitely plan on shopping, posting outfits and documenting everything right here on the blog!

I just checked the Rewind Festival site for updates and I am beyond excited because they made an addition that I was not expecting to the show we’re attending on August 19th.  Here is the line up to date:

  • OMD (see my posts here and here for previously attended shows)
  • Lightening Seeds (“Pure” was one of their more popular songs)
  • Adam Ant and The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse
  • Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals)
  • Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet, newly added!)
  • The Straits (Formerly Dire Straits)
  • Wang Chung
  • Marc Almond (Soft Cell)
  • John Parr (of “St. Elmo’s Fire” fame)
  • Midge Ure (Ultravox)
  • The Christians (Not too familiar with their music, although I have heard of them)
  • T’Pau (“Heart & Soul”)

My only nervous moments are thinking about being away from Dominic so long while he’s in his toddler phase, because he’s so attached to me right now (I think my husband will be fine).  I know Deon will plan lots of outings with Dominic (most likely golf related), so I’m hoping that will keep him occupied.  Despite that little bit of anxiety, the excitement just keeps building and building!  Look out for more updates as the date gets closer.  Cheers!
