Rodarte Fall 2011: Coat Lust

When I received the email from Fashionista.com with their fall reviews, I was immediately drawn to Rodarte’s fall 2011 line. I. Love. The. Coats. I think they are more “Pride & Prejudice” than “Little House on the Prairie”. If you recall the costumes from the BBC mini-series, they wore wonderful mid-length and long coats over their dresses. Everytime I see those coats I swoon (and I watch the series at least twice a year because I have the deluxe set). With these coats from Rodarte, I may have to invest in one just to satisfy this deep want.

Coat of the Week: Semi-Casual Friday

After a full morning of taking care of some things for my mom yesterday, my sister came over in the afternoon to help me with some of my “Coat of the Week” pictures.  I think she did a great job, don’t you?

A cashier at the grocery store said to me, “I love that jacket, you must be receiving tons of compliments on it!  It’s something that can make any outfit feel sexy, either dressed up or down.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Coat of the Week: Minor Setback

As my husband and I were setting up for pictures of the first outfit for my “Coat of the Week” pictorial, we experienced a minor setback:  I broke my camera.  I was walking away from my husband while handing him the camera and didn’t realize that my hand was still in the strap.  Next thing I know…crash!  My little Canon Power Shot never stood a chance against that tough pavement.  We need to send it into the manufacturer to get it fixed.

We managed to get a picture before it completely stopped working.  Luckily for us, we have more than one working camera.  I’ll be using either a Pentax Optio 750Z or my husband’s Sony A (alpha) 350.

When at first you don’t succeed…try, try again!

Coat of the Week

Since we are going back to “business casual” at my job, I’m going to start something to spark some creativity with my clothing.  I will pick a coat or jacket out from my wardrobe and post a picture of it at the beginning of the week.  I will then post pictures of my favorite outfits I create to go with that coat.  This could be daily or just a couple of outfits during the week, depending on how well the outfits work out.  I will then choose a different coat or jacket the following week and repeat.

This will be a fun and creative endeavor, so I hope you will enjoy what you see!  Here is the first coat that I will use this week:   The Rodarte for Target leopard print jacket that I purchased on eBay a couple of weeks ago (seen here).  I’ve been wearing it with all black lately, but I will infuse a little color and see what I can come up with.

The One That Almost Got Away

When Rodarte designed a line for Target, there were two jackets that I wanted:  the kimono floral print rain coat and the leopard print faux fur jacket.

I bought the rain coat because it reminded me of the opera coat that Carrie Bradshaw wore over a Calvin Klein silk tank dress in the episode of  “To Market, To Market” from SATC Season 6, where she is running late to the NYSE (note:  that coat is from SJP’s own wardrobe).  I love the copper buttons and that it’s so light.  In fact, I don’t even wear it in the rain. I detached the little hood and wear it just the way Carrie wears it, with something plain like a black or nude tank dress or with a plain white t-shirt and jeans with heels.

I truly regret not getting the faux fur leopard print jacket when I had the chance.  The Target that I went to only had the jacket in large and it was just too big.  It wasn’t online anymore, but I didn’t really make any attempts to get it at any other Target.  When I went back to the Target that had the large, that was gone too.  My intent at the time was to have it altered to fit.

After searching everywhere I could think of to get the jacket, I gave up…until recently.  These last few weeks, I have been scouring eBay for Rodarte items, and couldn’t find my precious leopard jacket.  But my efforts have finally paid off and I was able to find it today!  Leopard print will be a big part of this fall and always returns to the runway in some cool incarnation, so I am confident that this purchase will be a staple that I will bring out again and again.

The jacket I purchased is pictured on the right.  The double-breasted styling and details are like a classic pea coat, but the print gives it an edge.  Isn’t it adorable?

I have learned two things from this shopping experience:  1.  Go with your gut and make that purchase when you truly love something;  2.  When all else fails, go to eBay!
