Missing my mom…

Colita P Grospe: January 25, 1942 – April 1, 2023

It has been awhile since I’ve written a blog post, mainly because I couldn’t actually get into my blog. But in reality, it’s because I have been trying to figure out how to write this.

My mom passed away earlier this year. I had been her main caregiver since 2018, and although times were not so easy, I would not have changed a thing. She cared for me and my sister our whole lives, until she couldn’t anymore, so I did.

I read an article on The Cut recently where this woman was upset with her mother because she believes her to be “self-centered and immature”. Her mother is in her 70’s and is acting “selfish” in her eyes, and the daughter wants to limit or end her relationship with her. The author of the article (Kathryn Jezer-Morton) said this, which I hope opens the daughter’s eyes:

“I tend to think about our relationship with our parents as having two phases: the one when they are alive and the one you have with them when they’re dead. Anything can happen while they are alive. You can say things that will surprise them and vice versa. Incredible, the way we’re able to keep surprising each other even after we’ve written each other off. When they’re dead, all you can do is live with what you did and didn’t say.”

Kathryn Jezer-Morton, The Cut

I am glad that I had these five years with my mom, here in our home in Arizona. As difficult as it was to care for her at times, especially during her dialysis dementia phase, I don’t regret a thing. Because when we finally figured out what she needed and she was back on track by going on dialysis, she was a delight! All she wanted was to go to the casino, and visit San Diego occasionally, which we were able to do for her.

Last December, she had to go into a skilled nursing facility because she contracted Covid and needed additional care. She was improving and was slated to come home in April of this year. During that time, she was going to her regular dialysis center, and I had heard from her dialysis techs and nurses that she had been talking about “going to be with her husband”. But she started to get stronger, and could stand on her own, and was finally nearly ready to come home.

Sadly, she had another infection, and needed a hospital stay. There, she refused to eat and although I finally had convinced her to do so, she was getting weaker. I called her that week to say hi and that I would stop by when I got back from San Jose. She remembered that I was going to see Depeche Mode and told me to have fun. While I was there, I called the hospital just before dinner-time, and they told me she was doing well and ate her lunch. I went to the concert knowing she was in good hands.

Early the next morning, I received a call from the hospital that my mom was not responding as she normally would, and that the doctor needed to talk to me. I was told she had several mini-strokes during the night. I asked what her chances of having a normal life would be, and he gave me the grave news that she would not have any quality of life.

After I returned to Arizona, we called my sister, brother-in-law and niece, as well as the remaining patriarch of our family, my Uncle Narding and his wife, my Auntie Nanette. They came up immediately, and we all said our goodbyes. After they all left, my mom continued to hang on.

It was not long that we could tell the end was coming close. So I spent some time with her alone, explaining that we are going to be ok, and that she should be with dad now. That she raised us well, and we will do just fine because she did a great job guiding us. I think I saw her last breath, and after about 30 minutes after we left the hospital, they called us back and said she was gone.

I miss her. I miss her so much. But I’m also happy that I was able to have time with her, that we all were able to have time with her. I know she’s telling my dad all about their grandchildren, proud of everything we have become.

Holiday 2021 Wrap Up

I know it’s February 2022 now, but I wanted to post a few pictures from this past holiday, starting with a picture of our holiday card, and our beautiful tree! I received some amazing complimentary holiday decorations from Aurorava, and came up with a themed Christmas tree, with all blue hues. What’s even more impressive, is that I didn’t even use a filter in these pictures! The garland and cut-out ball ornaments have a Polar Light Film on them, so no matter where the lights are placed on the tree, the reflection causes anything around them to glow!

We also received tinsel, which I used on our hall tree to create a mid-century modern display in our entryway! If you like these decorations, you can find them on Amazon, just search “AURORAVA”.

In addition to our amazing new decorations, we finally got the chance to go back to San Diego! The last time we were in San Diego was back in 2019, when my mom and I went to visit right after Christmas. But this year, we all went and saw not only my sister and her family (and their new puppy, Bruno), but we got to see our cousins and extended family in Murietta! Plus, I got to have brunch with my besties, Janice & Regi, at Great Maple in UTC!

I hope you all had wonderful Christmas and New Year holidays! Here’s to bigger and better adventures in 2022, cheers!

Transitions To Another Place: We Moved to Arizona!

Historic Chandler 1

Life can take you through many changes, and my family has gone through several in the last few months.  It’s been awhile since I’ve posted because of those changes, which includes a move to Arizona!  Yes, you read that correctly, my family and I have moved to Arizona, Chandler to be exact!

I’ve actually been to Arizona three times in my life, two include trips to Downtown Chandler due to a management training with a company I worked with previously.  It’s quite funny because we now live a stone’s throw from the very hotel I stayed at in Historic Downtown Chandler.  In fact, my husband and I recently attended a wedding of friends we used to work with in San Diego, and the two people who I attended the training with both asked me if I went back to Murphy’s Law, where we went quite a few times during our stay!  During our first week in Chandler at the beginning of August, my husband, son and I had a late dinner there after furniture shopping, and I had the Bangers & Mash again, which was as delicious as I remember!

Murphys Law

The reason we are now living in Arizona is because my husband got a fantastic job in Tempe, an opportunity he just couldn’t pass up.  Prior to leaving San Diego, my husband and I discussed several places to move, and we settled on Chandler due to its proximity in “The Valley” (which includes Metro Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Scottsdale), and also due to affordability.  Even with the heat (the highest was 118 degrees when we arrived), you really just can’t beat the cost of living out here in Arizona.  A big bonus is that Dominic’s school is walking distance, which makes for easy mornings!

Historic Chandler 2

I will admit, I miss San Diego very much.  In fact, I’ve already been to San Diego twice since we moved out here (back-to-back weekends).  But I am finally getting acclimated to the heat, which I’ve heard has been the hottest in a long while here.  Aside from the heat, I’m enjoying getting to know Chandler.  It has grown so much since I was last here nearly 10 years ago, and I’m allowing myself to get a little lost here with the confidence that my GPS will always guide me back home.

If you still follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, you’ll see my adventures have pretty much involved food, and a little shopping.  I hope to soon include more fashion and events here in Arizona.  I’ve got some catch up posts from when I was still in San Diego, but I will be back on schedule with weekly posts.  One of our first big concert adventures here in Arizona will be at the Comerica Theatre to see Nine Inch Nails.  Although I’m thrilled to be seeing NIN with my husband and son (a first for each of them), I’m so very excited to finally see The Jesus and Mary Chain, a favorite of mine since the 80’s.

Stay tuned for all of our new adventures and thank you again for following along.  Cheers!

Happy Holidays 2017

Santa 2017

I hope this season finds you and your families happy, healthy and full of cheer!

In the grand tradition of my blog during the Christmas holiday, I’ve included Dominic’s annual Santa picture.  This year, Dominic went with Dad back to Las Vegas to visit the family while he’s on winter break.  I had to stay home because of my new job, but Grandma took him to Bass Pro Shops and got this great picture of Dominic hanging out with Santa rather than the standard one where he’s perched on Santa’s lap.

Merry Christmas everyone, and please enjoy my Christmas Mixtape on Spotify!

Our Joey: How Our Dog Has Impacted Our Lives

Puppyspot 2

This week is National Dog Week and what better way to celebrate than to do a blog post inspired by PuppySpot, about how our awesome little rescue, Joey, has impacted our lives and how dogs can not only improve our emotional health, but also our physical health as well.

The biggest impact Joey has had on our lives is that he has not only brought us happiness, but he has become a part of our family.  He is with us in our day-to-day routine, but he is also with us at important gatherings like Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.  Joey brings us true joy, especially when he interacts with our son, Dominic.  Those two are inseparable!

PuppySpot created the graphic below, showing how pups improve our health through our hearts, minds and bodies.  How has your dog impacted your life?  Let me know in the comments below!

Where The West Is Fun: The San Diego Country Fair 2017

SDCF 2017 1

The beginning of June also signals an annual family tradition: The San Diego County Fair!  This year’s theme is “Where The West Is Fun”, but isn’t a fair always fun?  The sights, the sounds, the smells of The San Diego County Fair all let you know the start of the summer is here and it all just takes me back to when I attended the fair with my sister and parents, known as The Del Mar Fair when I was younger.  Now, my husband and I take Dominic every year because I want him to also grow up with the same wonderful memories of The San Diego County Fair.  We attended The Fair recently, and you still have time to enjoy all that The Fair has to offer.  It runs from June 2 to July 4, and all ticket information can be found here.  A way to save and get the best “bang for your buck” at The Fair would be to buy the “Passport to Savings” coupon book (either at The Fair or online), sponsored by Albertsons and Vons.  It’s only $5 and comes with a free San Diego County Fair admission return ticket ($18 value), plus one of the coupons is for a free Souvenir Cup with purchase from one of the food vendors, Fresh Pretzels.  The cup is refillable throughout the time of the fair, which is only $2.60 each refill!  We buy it every year because it’s filled with amazing savings at vendors all over The Fair, but hang on to it because the savings can be extended to outside The Fair to places like 7-Eleven, Broken Yolk and California Sock Company!

Cheers and happy trails!

On Birthdays, We Wear Pink!

Birthday 2017 9

Before the month ends, I wanted to put up pictures of when my sister and I went out for my birthday earlier this month.  We both have Monday’s off, and my birthday was on May 8th, which fell on a Monday this year.  Since my husband was working and our son was in school, my sister and I went on a mini-adventure in the Irvine area.  I’ll split our trip up into two parts, which was what I wore, and what we ate!

Birthday Adventure 2017:  THE OUTFIT

Birthday 2017 13

I bought two things from the Victoria Beckham for Target line:  The Blush Floral Jacquard Bomber Jacket and the Black Collared Dress, which I’ll be wearing in another outfit post (pictured above).  It was fitting that we visited the Hello Kitty Cafe on our way home, because pink was the order of the day, and who wears it better than Hello Kitty!  I wore the jacket very casually with black jeans and a white t-shirt, but jazzed it up a bit with a pom-pom necklace, metallic sneakers, and of course…pink pins!

Outfit:  Blush Jacquard Bomber Jacket by Victoria Beckham for Target (no longer available online); The Cotton Box-Cut Pocket Tee by Everlane; Michael Kors purse (older, no longer available); Jeans and Leather Eyes Bag Tag by Madewell

Birthday Adventure 2017:  THE FOOD

Birthday 2017 1

Our food adventure began at Burntzilla (menu here) and ended at Stax Cookie Bar (we didn’t actually eat at Hello Kitty Cafe).

Burntzilla is a brick & mortar cafe, combining two of Orange County’s popular food trucks: Burnt Truck and Dogzilla.  We originally had other plans to visit a place that served specialty tater tots, but unfortunately it was closed on Mondays.  Since I was in the mood for tater tots in any form, I searched “tater tots Anaheim”, and Burntzilla came up (although the location is in the Irvine area).  I love a good slider, so the menu was appealing because it had different variations on sliders and mini-hot dogs.

Birthday 2017 3

The folks at Burntzilla generously gave me a complimentary Golden Combo for my birthday!  The Golden Combo is a great deal because you can get two Sliders or Zillas (or one of each), with a soda and naked side.  Along with the tots, I had the Yaki Zilla (hot dog) and the Sloppy Joe Slider.  Both were amazing and the tots made my meal perfect!

Birthday 2017 2

My sister also had the Golden Combo, but had the Dogzilla, Cheeseburger Slider and fries, since I had the tots.

Birthday 2017 4

For dessert, we wanted something out of the ordinary.  On the fly, my sister hit the dessert jackpot in her search while we were literally on the road, and found Stax Cookie Bar, right across the street from UC Irvine.  Based on the pictures below, you’ll see why!

Birthday 2017 7

Birthday 2017 5 - Copy

This is the Smookie.  Stax has a variety of filled cookies to choose from, and you can top it any way you desire.  Since it was my birthday, I had the Snickerdoodle cookie (filled with Nutella) topped with birthday cake ice cream and caramel sauce.  I can’t even begin to describe how decadent it was!

Birthday 2017 Collage 2a

On the left is the Bacon Chocolate Chip Creamrito, which my sister attempted to get through.  The Creamrito is rolled ice cream wrapped around more ice cream and other yummy fillings.  This truly is a two-person dessert, and we do plan on coming back up and doing it justice because it was quite delicious.  On the right, is the famous “Waffle Shot” by Zia Valentina.  I had my first one at The Grove, but the one I had at Stax was espresso with ice cream at the bottom of the shot.  Yes, it was as good as it sounds!

Birthday 2017 Collage 1

I had a great time on this mini-food adventure with my sister, who gifted me with several new pins, because well, she’s my sister and knows what I love!  Thank you Rholnna for spending my birthday with me, and here’s to more foodie adventures to come.  Cheers!
