The Rebecca Minkoff Sample Sale in LA This Weekend!

Alright kids, the Rebecca Minkoff Sample Sale has hit the West Coast!  If you missed entering the contest for the Mini MAC that I posted about at the beginning of November or didn’t get a chance to grab a deal at the Black Friday sale on the official site, you should head over to Confederacy in LA to take advantage of this great opportunity to get RM items at fantastic prices (if you’ve never been, it’s an adorable store with the nicest staff).  I went to the last one (post here), and wish I could have taken home more!  If time permits, I’m going to try to head up on Saturday.   For those of you further north, they also have a one day sale in San Francisco.  Click on the picture to take you to the Minkette blog for more details.  Have a great weekend and happy shopping!

Elegant Impact: Meet Carrie Parry

What do you get when you mix sassiness with sustainability:  a clothing line that features a wonderful twist on the classics by designer Carrie Parry.  Not only are her pieces chic and elegant with a retro feel, they are designed with thoughtful consideration to social and economic impact.  I had the pleasure to ask Carrie a few questions about her design concept and how she made the decision to be socially responsible with her clothing line.

When you first decided to start your own business, did you your concept always include sustainability and social responsibility, or was this an evolution?

Carrie Parry – My work in fashion opened my eyes to the environmental and social impact that the industry can have and I decided that if I wanted to continue working in fashion, I needed to learn more about what I could do to help bring about change. I started taking a graduate course at the University of Delaware in Socially Responsible Apparel Business. I’m still completing it now and it has really been such a great guiding point to social responsibility for me.   When I launched, I was motivated to create a line founded on my passion to create pieces that never go out of style and a commitment to responsible sources and practices so it  is really at the core of my business.  Sustainability is really about improving and building upon social responsibility so it is all of course a process and I hope to keep learning and improving everyday!

Has it been challenging to be a company who sources sustainability?  What is your biggest challenge?

CP – Being a small business and not having the leverage with suppliers and factories can be frustrating at times as it can be harder to implement change and improvement.  Not having the access to as many fabrics can be limiting as well but it is definitely much more rewarding to source environmentally responsible fabrics and fabrics woven by women-owned cooperatives and artisans.

I love the retro feel of your clothing!  What is the main concept design of your apparel?  Where do you draw your inspiration?

CP – I love the idea of customization and  the transformation of clothing. It allows people to grow from being users of clothing to becoming engagers of clothing and gives the clothing the ability to effortlessly transition from day to night and work to play.  Quality and timelessness are really important to me and I try and design pieces that I hope will be treasured in a women’s wardrobe for a lifetime. So when I design, I always try and keep this in mind!

For the SS12 season, I was obsessed with watching 1960s New Wave films.  I fell in love with the whimsy and sophistication of films like Une Femme and Mascualn Feminin by Godard and Alain Resnais. I find daily inspiration in lots of things like film, exhibitions, theatre and people-watching and NYC is the perfect place for it!

What do you enjoy best about what you do?

CP – I love my team-my suppliers-my factory. Learning something new everyday. The daily inspiration and creating something new and special every season.

Thank you so much Carrie for taking the time out to answer my questions!  You can check out her official site at carrieparry.com for more information and where to purchase her line.

Look Cute While Staying Connected

I think it’s the glitter and shine that makes me love Juicy Couture’s new “Powered by Couture” line.   It’s just so much fun, and so useful.  I’m definitely going to get the glitter smart phone cover for my iPhone 3GS, and will probably get that gold case for when I upgrade to the 4S.  Oh, but what I really love is the blue leather gemlock iPad case.  I don’t have an iPad (yet), so I think that it would make for a great clutch until I get one, don’t you?  Happy Monday!

Win Your Own Rebecca Minkoff Mini MAC!

The folks from Rebecca Minkoff (one of my favorite designers), have asked me to extend an invitation to Any Second Now readers to join a very special contest: win a Mini MAC!  As you have seen in many of my outfit posts, I’m all about the MAC (Morning After Clutch).  Now is your opportunity to win a petite version of your very own!

What I love is that the Mini is just as stylish and functional as the larger version, with enough room to fit grab and go essentials.  The strap is still adjustable so it can be worn crossbody, doubled to be carried by hand or shoulder, or removed to go from casual to evening in a snap.

Throughout the month of November, Rebecca Minkoff will be running this Mini MAC giveaway to introduce the cutest addition to the Morning After family.  They will select 30 lucky Minkettes to win!

Click on the picture above for the link to the entry form.  Good luck and have a great weekend!

Weekend in Pictures: Why I Love The Venetian

A couple of weeks ago, we went to Las Vegas for Labor Day weekend.  We go to Vegas several times a year because my husband’s family is there.  It not only allows us to see the family so they can spend time with our son Dominic, but it also allows us time to have a date night on the Strip or date weekend in Mesquite.

One of my favorite hotels on the Strip is The Venetian, maybe because we stayed there on our honeymoon.  Right after our ceremony and reception, we stayed at The Venetian on our wedding night, right before we went to New York and Europe.  So many times on The Strip you see couples going around the casinos dressed in their suit and gowns, so we did the same.  Lots of congratulations and well wishes showered us as we walked through the hotel.  The best part was that we were given the Presidential suite for the price of our regular suite.  My husband still thanks me to this day for that small but effective idea!

Like all of the larger hotels on the Strip, the decor is larger than life and almost overwhelming, depending on which hotel you visit.  Places like Circus Circus, The Excalibur and even New York, New York have almost an amusement park feel to them.  That’s why I enjoy hotels like Mandalay Bay, The Bellagio, The Cosmopolitan, The Wynn, and The Venetian.  They feel a little more luxurious and opulent.  I enjoy faux Italian interior of The Venetian, resplendent with beautiful fountains, gardens, waterways, gondolas, and bridges.  Even their bars and restaurants are works of art themselves.

What I really love about The Venetian are the shops and eateries.  Right off the bat, they have the only cafe on the West Coast (as far as I know) dedicated to my favorite coffee: Espressamente Illy.  I posted a picture of a small portion of the pillar of cups previously, but below is a shot of just how high up the cups went into the ceiling.  Also pictured is my favorite item from their menu, the Affogado.  It is a scoop of gelato with a shot of espresso, topped with whipped cream.  A few people both inside and outside the cafe stopped me to find out what I was having.  It is even better than it looks.

We tried a new place to eat at The Venetian called Valentino.  My husband heard about it through a guy he played golf with, who also happens to be a waiter there.  I have learned lately to ask the servers what their favorite dishes are, and he told us about a dish only made when this certain couple calls to request it ahead of time.  I can’t remember the name of it exactly, but it’s basically a cheese stuffed ravioli with a black truffle cream sauce.  Other than in Italy, it was one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had.  They have a great gnocchi dish, too.

Of course last but not least, the shopping.  The shops range from affordable to high-end, depending on your taste.  I got a couple of shots of some beautiful store fronts.  Even if I can’t quite rush in and immediately buy something at a moment’s notice (I actually could, but the hubby would protest), it’s always fun to window shop.  So if you’re ever in Las Vegas, one of your must-see hotels on the Strip has got to be The Venetian.  Hope you all had a great weekend!

All The Way Up Here: Missoni for Target

Target has collaborated again to create a new wonderful collection available today.  In searching for information on the line, I came across this article from The Huffington Post, here.  Right before the announcement in Vogue, it seems that a mysterious blog called All The Way Up Here has had the inside track to all things Missoni for Target.  Clever, Target, very clever!

No matter how they chose to put it out there, I absolutely LOVE the collection. Just like the Liberty of London for Target line, they have hit every department with this new collection, including furniture.  If you like what you see, the collection is available today until October 22.  Also, check out this link on Target’s site here and the full lookbook on Fashionista.com here.  You know where I’ll be today!

No Pressure: Behind the Scenes of Rebecca Minkoff’s Fall 2011 Runway Show

As you have read on my blog and have seen in many outfit posts, I am a big fan of Rebecca Minkoff.  Because her fall line is now available the web, I received an email with this video of Rebecca as she prepared for her first runway show at Lincoln Center.  I’m truly jealous of all of you who get to enjoy any of the NYC Fashion Week activities.  Have fun and enjoy this video while I check out her fall line (seen here)!

Lucy In Disguise

I recently watched an episode of “Later, with Jools Holland” that I recorded on my DVR because Depeche Mode performed.  If you are unfamiliar with the show set up, the host, Jools Holland (formerly of Squeeze fame) has several artists on the show, all on a circular stage.  All performers and bands are completely set up and ready to play their songs after another finishes.  Depeche Mode performed three songs (two from “Songs of the Universe” and one from “Songs of Faith and Devotion”), but I had to wait for the other performers to play before it came round to their set.  I know I have a DVR and could have fast-forwarded through the other performers, but this is part of how I discover new artists, or artists I have not had the pleasure of getting to know.

Lily Allen was a part of the performers list.  I have not really heard anything by her, but have known about her for quite sometime due to the British tabloids and fashion spots.  I’ve always liked her quirky fashion sense, but now I’m really enjoying her music.  I recently received an email from Shopbop that they were going to feature her new clothing line called “Lucy in Disguise“, which is her collaboration with her sister Sarah Owen.   The line was borne out of their vintage shop in London of the same name (official site here), and has the same retro vibe found in Lily’s own style.

I love this line.   I love that there is a mix of sexy with demure, where the hemlines go from short to midi-length.  I know it’s supposed to be a modern take on retro, but I like that it’s more retro than modern.  They all have a lot of swing to them, which is what I adore about dresses made back in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.  When I go to London next year, I’m going to definitely visit her shop.

Note:  I know the top image is a bit odd, but I kind of like that industry, video-edit look.  It’s directly from Lily Allen’s “Later, with Jools Holland” appearance.

Links à la Mode: The IFB Weekly Roundup

Thank you to Vahni of Grit & Glamour and IFB for the inclusion in this past week’s Links a la Mode.  It is always an honor to be on this list of fantastic bloggers.

Ask and you shall receive

Edited by Vahni of Grit & Glamour

This blogging thing…it’s been around a while now, and many are realizing what a rewarding endeavor it is, on a sartorial and psychological level. One thing I love about blogging is the opportunity to ask a question, ponder a theory—and have others share their thoughts and opinions as well. In this week’s roundup, several bloggers reflect on the positive influence blogging has had on their lives and self-esteem. (Superb! Yay for blogging!) Others ruminated on everything from whether style is really subjective, to whether fashion as an exhibit is a trend. Or not.

Stumped for post ideas? Want more engagement with your readers? Been contemplating the style-related proclivities of society? Ask, lovelies. Everyone has an opinion, and most are chomping at the bit to share. But the most wonderful aspect of this kind of engagement is not more comments. Those are nice, yes. It’s through discussion that personalities are revealed and relationships are forged. Your readers aren’t just a little avatar and some words. They are vibrant individuals—and your biggest fans!
