¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  Being a border town right next to Tijuana, it’s easy to see the celebration all around San Diego.  Many people tend to confuse today with Mexican Independence Day (which occurs on September 16), so here is a little explanation of what exactly is celebrated during Cinco de Mayo (from Wikipedia):

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance in Mexico itself, the date is observed nationwide mostly in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. “Cinco de Mayo is not a Mexican holiday—it is an American Civil War holiday, created spontaneously by Mexicans and Latinos living in California who supported the fragile cause of defending freedom and democracy during the first years of that bloody war between the states.” Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

This is a great time to head to Downtown San Diego and Old Town to celebrate, especially with great food.  Outside of Ensenada and Rosarito, here are a list of places that I love to go to when I need a bit of Mexican cuisine (click on the link for locations and official website).  ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

1. Fresh MXN Food (Formerly known as Santana’s Mexican Grill.  The Quesomush quesadilla is the BEST!)

2. El Indio Mexican Restaurant & Catering (As featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network.)

3. Sombrero Mexican Food (Touted as Blink 182’s favorite Mexican cafe.  They go to the one in Poway, but we frequent the one in Misison Valley.)

4. Old Town Mexican Cafe & Cantina (Home of the original tortilla makers in Old Town.)

5. Roberto’s Mexican Food (If you want good rolled tacos, there is practically one around every corner here!)

Birds on a Platform

This is my first outfit post after my “40 for 40” remix, and I’m celebrating it with new shoes.  I know that I said that I was going to get the Grayson shoes by Jeffrey Campbell first (post seen here), but I just couldn’t resist these Piccoo platform pumps by Steve Madden at the price I got them for (after all of my discounts through DSW, I ended up paying only $23!).  I was looking for a neutral-nearly-nude shoe and these are the perfect shade in a very sexy style.  We had casual week at work, but I just couldn’t resist dressing up in my pretty bird frock just to take these shoes for a spin.

Outfit – Cotton On dress & cardigan; H&M belt; Steve Madden shoes; Coach sunglasses; Juicy Couture ring; Tiffany & Co necklace

Weekend in Pictures: Shots From a Cell Phone

It’s not often that I forget my camera.  Unfortunately when I do, it’s usually during an occasion worth capturing.  We attended a friend’s wedding at a beautiful location that surprisingly never occurred to me could be used as a wedding venue:  The Karl Strauss Brewery & Gardens.  It was a gorgeous day and the backdrop was spectacular.  If I had my camera, you would be able to see that in living color.  Also, if I had a camera with a proper flash, I could have taken a few of the beautiful couple.  But alas, I had to use my cell phone camera and my husband’s iPhone.  We still managed to get a few shots, and I took this opportunity to use the “Shake It!” app on the iPhone, which produces pictures that look as if they were taken by an old school Polaroid camera.  It’s a fun feature because you can “shake” the phone to make the picture appear.

Our little boy was on his best behavior, impressing everyone at our table with his use of utensils (we have a travel set that we bring everywhere).  The guests were also digging on his look, which I guess I could describe as country club golfer and marvelling at the fact that he is only 2 years-old.  One guest even stopped me to say that he should be doing catalog modeling because he is just too cute.  With that little smirk of a smile, we think he’s quite cute, too!

Dominic’s outfit – Crazy 8 cardigan; H&M shirt and tie; Old Navy pants and hat; One Star sneakers

Deon’s outfit – J. Ferrar suit; Stafford tie; Van Heusen shirt; Florsheim shoes

My outfit – Oasis silk dress; Steve Madden shoes

Royally Yours: Kate Middleton & Prince William’s Wedding

By the time this posts, I will have either watched part or all of the ceremony of the century:  the royal wedding of Catherine “Kate” Middleton to Prince William.  I will faithfully get up and watch this joyous occasion, even though I have set my DVR to record everything on BBC America.  Like a lot of people, I’m all a flutter about what Kate’s dress will look like and I am thoroughly enjoying all of the coverage of the wedding preparations from England.  I even watched “Royally Mad” on BBC America, a show about 10 American’s picked because of their Royal Family obsessions to participate in activities and contests themed around the upcoming nuptials.  I only wish I were there myself to soak it all in.

I remember watching Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding, and also Prince Andrew and Sarah’s wedding.  Although I was eleven and sixteen respectively, I recall getting up at all hours of the morning just to witness it live.  I guess my anglophilism began long before high school.

I hope you all enjoy the wedding as much as I will.  In the meantime, for something a little fun, you can wish the couple well by signing “The Royal Wedding Guestbook” on Yahoo.  Cheers!

Remix Update: Over & Out!

I hit the home stretch in stride and finished out my “40 for 40” remix!  As I mentioned before, I did get a bit lazy and didn’t quite take pictures everyday of the challenge, which is why it lasted longer than the 40 days.  But it was well worth it, because I’m actually looking at every piece of clothing, shoe and accessory with a little more scrutiny before I’ll consider adding it to my wardrobe.  So now it’s time to go “shopping in my closet” again…and a little out of my closet, too!

Weekend in Pictures: A Red Robin, A Bunny & Some Eggs for Easter

We had a very busy Easter weekend:  While Deon played a golf tournament on Saturday at Sycuan Resort and Casino (he tied for 3rd place in his division), my sister and I took the kids out to lunch and a little shopping.  Then on Sunday, we went to church and then to a family Easter celebration at a local park (the picture above was actually taken at the Plaza Bonita mall near our house 2 weeks ago).  It’s been a tradition to have a potluck-style picnic, then have all the kids gather together for a big Easter Egg hunt.  I hope you also had a wonderful and blessed Easter!

Friend Friday: Inspiration

FBFF continues to celebrate its one year birthday by asking questions that were asked a year ago.  I had not started fashion blogging back then, so I will have to go back and see the responses from a year ago.  It will be interesting to see how things have changed, or how they have stayed the same.

Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?

In thinking about this question and as I am writing, I’m finding a lot of my fashion inspiration comes from movies.  When I was in my mid to late teens, I followed Molly Ringwald, especially when “Pretty In Pink” was released.  I emulated her style in that movie because she didn’t wear any flourescent colors, anything ripped or sliced, and her style was very vintage with the floral vests, crocheted sweaters and granny boots.   Her style in that movie complimented the music I was listening to at the time and the soundtrack of that movie could have been the soundtrack to my life at that time.

I then turned to Meg Ryan after seeing “You’ve Got Mail” and “French Kiss”.  Her style in both of those movies was easy, not fussy and classic.  I think my love for the cardigan sweater and the shift dress really developed after seeing those movies.

My most recent and most significant fashion inspiration has come from “Sex and the City”.   This is the most creative I have been with my wardrobe, because I realize that I no longer have to provide excuses for who I am at this point in my life.  Watching “Sex and the City” just confirmed this fact for me.  I am younger than all of the ladies in SATC, so seeing the clothing they were wearing really inspired me to be more daring, more bold and to truly not be afraid to reflect your personality in your clothing style and fashion sense.

When it comes to your own personal style, what inspires you?

Creativity inspires me.  I consider myself a creative and artistic person, and I like for those things to come out in the way I dress.  I’m inspired by music, art, film, travel and photography.  I’m always looking for an interesting element to stand out of my outfit, and sometimes it’s because of something I’ve either seen, a place that I’ve been to, or something I’ve read about.  It could be a color, a photograph of a great pair of shoes or a favorite song.  Then I am inspired to create and develop an outfit around that.

How do you hope to inspire your readers?

I hope that I can inspire my readers to be creative with everything that they do in life.  This creativity can carry through to all aspects of everything you do, not just with style and fashion.  Meals, activities, vacations, party planning, or even a lazy day at home with your children can be incredibly creative.

Outside the realm of fashion who/what inspires you?

My son and husband inspire me all the time with their love and laughter.  My friends and family inspire me as well because of their warmth and loyalty.  But one of my true passions outside of fashion is music.  I was in a few different choirs from elementary all the way up to college and beyond.  I also have been playing piano since the age of 5 all the way up to around 14.  I resumed piano in high school, and played regularly until I directed my own choir (from 1995 to around 2003).

I surround myself with music no matter where I am and what I’m doing.  I must always have a music device with me at all times, whether it’s my iPod, satellite radio, or car stereo.  I have been an avid concert goer since I was 14, and still attend concerts as often as I can.  My husband does deejaying on the side, and is a musician himself (sax).  When I was pregnant I used to take my headphones or mini speakers and hold them to my stomach so that my son could hear the music I listen to.   Now, he sings all the time and loves to dance and I have to think that it’s because his parents are musically inclined.  To me, music not only inspires, but also unites.

And since Idol is ending… Which songs inspire you?

This is actually a nice transition from my previous answer, isn’t it?  I am heavily into 80’s alternative and pop music right now, so anything from that era is inspirational to me.  I remember listening to those songs during their heyday, and it’s fun to listen to them again and see where I’ve been and where I am now.  I’ll hear a song like “Melt With You” by Modern English and think “I wasn’t even driving when this song was released, and here I am now driving my son to the park with my husband…”  Those are always “Ah ha!” moments.

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is a Google group for bloggers to converse on a given topic each week. Katy from ModlyChic sends the questions, bloggers post their responses and then add their post to the list of people sharing their thoughts on the subject matter. To get started, check out this great tutorial on Grit & Glamour here.
