Weekend in Pictures: The Carlsbad Village Faire

DSC01125 (2) (1280x960)

Back on May 5, 2013, my mother-in-law came into town to pay a visit to her grandson, and also because she had an Origami Owl booth at The Carlsbad Village Faire.  The Faire is the nation’s largest one-day street faire.  I know it’s in the name, but I was completely unprepared for just how many streets this faire would cover!  Although the weather left much to be desired (it rained at the very end), I had a great time getting to know Carlsbad.  I fully intend to come back to Carlsbad and explore more of this beautiful beach side northern San Diego city.  In the meantime, I’ve included a photo diary of our day at The Faire.  Enjoy!

I bought a cute little handmade Geisha girl backpack from the booth on the left, and failed to get that cute purse on the right.  It was only $10!

Music was also all around in the form of live bands, wares, and…hares!  Added another record store to my list to go back and visit: Spin Records.

While I add record stores to my list of places to visit, my hubby adds golf courses.

You bet I’m coming back to visit Carlsbad and shop…they have a Bit O’ Britain there!

Weekend in Pictures: Record Store Day Food!

RSD 2013 Food Collage from Pink CandlesWho knew that our food adventures would be just as eventful as our fabulous finds during Record Store Day?  It’s not so hard to imagine when the adventures happen with a friend who is a food blogger!  As mentioned in last Monday’s post, here is part two of my Record Store Day adventure with CC of the blog Pink Candles at Ridgemont High (who provided photos for the mini-collage of moi above).  We started off the day very early by standing in line at Donut Bar in Downtown San Diego.  I can safely say that this is the first time that I have ever stood in line early just to get into a food establishment.  We left my house at 7:15 am and there were still people in front of us!  The picture below was taken after we had already been inside and then sat down across the street to enjoy one of our donuts (you can see a picture of our day in line on their Tumblr page here).

RSD 2013 Food Collage 2I’m glad that the menu was posted because we got the chance to think about what we wanted prior to going in (they also post their menu daily on their official Facebook page).  Even then, walking past all of the donut goodness had me changing my mind several times before I made my final decision: German chocolate cake donuts for my husband and mum; a blood orange, a blueberry with meyer lemon glaze, a creme brulee and maple bacon bar all for myself.  CC selected the same ones, sans the maple bacon bar.  Needless to say, I ate the maple bacon bar straight away, but my runaway favorites were the blood orange and creme brulee.  The blood orange donut had a wonderful citrus glaze and the donut was so soft and fluffy.  The combination melted in my mouth.  The creme brulee one was a filled donut, and had the same crunchy candied sugar topping as a true creme brulee dessert, so it was like eating a handheld version.  Overall, quite a delicious start to our day!  We saved the rest of our donuts for later and at that point headed to the San Diego Record Show and then Groovy Records.  After our first two record stops, we headed to Pacific Beach (the M-Theory line was a bit too long).  I took the picture a row of bikes after we parked the car (below).  I just adore that mint and pink one.

Before we ventured into Thrift Trader and Cow Records, we had lunch at Papa Luna’s Empanadas, an establishment specializing in empanadas.  Being Filipina, both CC and I are very familiar with empanadas, but I’ve never had them like this.  CC had two empanadas:  a shrimp filled one (I don’t think it was on the menu pictured above) and one filled with butternut squash.  I had the special of the month, the Moussaka (lamb, eggplant, garlic and parmesan).  CC explained that you can have them either baked or fried, and she suggested fried, and I couldn’t have imagined having them any other way.  Because I usually have ones filled with beef and potato, the empanadas at Papa Luna’s were so flavorful and unexpected.  I will have to go back and bring my family and try the dessert empanadas.  That dulce de leche and apple one has my name written all over it!

RSD 2013 Food Collage 4CC suggested that we have dessert at Sugar & Scribe, an Irish bakery next door to Cow Records, which was our last food stop of the day.  Everything that I had at Sugar & Scribe was fabulous and oh-so-delicious.  CC bought a few desserts to take home and also had a quiche in the store.  Here were my goodies: the orange creamsicle and Grandpa Soapy’s lemon curd mini-cupcakes, a spicy ginger chew, a couple of mini sugar cookies and a bag of shortbread cookies.  The mini-cupcakes were light and so very fresh.  I love desserts with citrus in them (such as the blood orange donut at Donut Bar), and both the orange creamsicle and lemon curd cupcakes satisfied that craving.  The mini sugar cookies were as pretty as they were yummy and the ginger chew reminded me of Christmas.  I’m savoring the shortbread cookies, and I still have two more to have with tea.  Not only did I love the baked goods, but I adored the quaint decor, personal pictures on the wall, the stories behind each recipe printed and displayed, and the lovely conversation we had with the owner and her family members.  I had such a great time on Record Store Day because it was an all around spectacular sensory experience for the mind, stomach, ears and soul.  I want to thank CC for a great outing, and here’s to more to come!

Let Them Eat Little Cakes

DSC00976 (2) (1280x1280)

I’m still putting together my post about my food adventures during Record Store Day.  As a teaser, I thought I’d do a post about a place I went to a few weekends ago.  My son and I helped celebrate my brother-in-law’s birthday up in Vista, which is north of where I live in San Diego.  We first had lunch at Famous Dave’s BBQ, then we decided to have dessert at a place called Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen.  If the name sounds familiar to you, it’s because they appeared on the “Funny or Die” episode of Cupcake Wars, and won!

DSC00978 (1280x1280)

It’s a quaint little bakery, and I’m not sure what they made of our large group because we basically took over the store.  I didn’t really linger at the specialty cupcakes because I heard that there were cupcakes made with bacon, so I made a beeline for those immediately.  I decided on three cupcakes:  the Vanilla Milkshake, Pancakes and Bacon, and Strawberry Champagne.  The Pancakes and Bacon was my runaway favorite because it had bacon bits all the way through the cupcake.  The maple flavor makes it taste more like syrup rather than pancakes, but that bacon just makes up for everything.  My second favorite was the Strawberry Champagne because it was like a very light version of a red velvet cake.  The Vanilla Milkshake cupcake was also good, but looking back at the pictures, I want to go back and try the specialty ones because these all have specialty fillngs, toppings and ingredients.  The Pearl is actually one that was on the episode of Cupcake Wars, and the Chocolate Cannoli looks and sounds absolutely delicious.

Although Vista is quite a way north, I know that I’ll have to make another trip back because they have a variety of seasonal and specialty cupcakes available (full flavor menu here).  Plus, their Facebook page lists the flavors that are on their daily menu.  What a fantastic find we stumbled upon.  This was my first specialty cupcake shop, and believe me, it won’t be my last!

Weekend in Pictures: South Park Wild West Walkabout

Wild West Walkabout Collage 1

This past weekend, I met up with CC (I formerly referred to her as Pink Candles) from the blog Pink Candles at Ridgemont High and we took our kids to do the South Park Wild West Walkabout.  Because there was so much to cover, I thought I’d break up the post into two parts, and this post will focus mainly on the atmosphere and food.

What’s a Walkabout?

It’s a fun-filled evening festival to introduce you to the shops and cafes of South Park.

From Kalima to Beech Streets, you’ll find shops open late, entertainment, specials, and surprises.  Browse, explore, shop, and celebrate the independent spirit of our neighborhood.

Charm in the Heart of the City

Nestled between North Park and Golden Hill, South Park is a historic enclave with a welcoming variety of independently-owned gift and clothing boutiques, markets and cafes, taverns and restaurants, art galleries and salons.  Enjoy our special events and unhurried visits to our warm and friendly neighborhood.

South Park reminds me of an area like Shoreditch in London, very artsy and quite eclectic. I would love to go back down there to take more pictures and maybe even do some outfit posts because there’s just so much visual candy out there. I’m glad that we started early because as the night went on, it got more and more crowded. Not only was there a lot to take in visually, music filled the air around every corner. Being bloggers, CC and I were snapping pictures left and right. Had I known that I would be taking as many pictures as I did, I would have charged my camera. Sadly, it died as we got to some very interesting art (which consisted of mutilated dolls and BBQ skewers).

Although there were dozens of places to eat by way of cafes, restaurants and food trucks, we opted for convenience (and a place to sit).  We decided on a San Diego staple, Sombrero Mexican Food.  If you like Blink 182, this local chain is one in the same in the lyrics from the song Josie:  “She brings me mexican food from Sombrero just because” (I’ve read that fans still drop off letters and gifts at the Poway location).  CC and her daughter had fish and chicken tacos and a combo plate, while I had my favorite rolled tacos.  Dominic had been asking for french fries since we left the house, so we were lucky that they had it on their menu.  Afterwards, we treated ourselves to fantastic ice cream at The Daily Scoop.  CC explained that their ice cream comes locally from Niederfrank’s, who makes ice cream handmade from their location in National City.  The reason I took a picture of the awning is because she also said that it was the former location of M-Theory Music, which can still be seen underneath.  In that last collage picture, you can see my delicious waffle cone filled with two scoops: Butterscotch Marble and Blueberry Cheesecake. Yum!

CC’s daughter was so awesome and did her best to keep Dominic occupied during the evening.  He was a bit grumpy because we woke him up just at the beginning of his nap right when we arrived.  The only way we could really get him to enjoy himself more was to tell him that he could get his face painted at cute children’s store called So Childish, where they had many of the kid’s activities.  Dominic got his face done up like his favorite superhero, Spider-Man.  As a plus, every child got a free cowboy hat in line with the Wild West theme.

We ended the night with a couple of items for the road: a key lime cheesecake for CC’s hubby and a cafe latte carmelato for moi (made with Illy coffee) from Cafe Madeleine.  The quaint corner location and French inspired signs reminded me of the little cafes I saw around Paris last summer.  The coffee made for a nice handwarmer for the ride home.  Dominic and I had a great time with CC and her daughter at the Wild West Walkabout.  Part two of our South Park adventure will be about the shops we ventured into and some of my cool finds.  Hope you had a great weekend!

Pink Candles in My Burning Kitchen

DSC00642 (2) (1280x896)

Two weekends ago, I had the pleasure of meeting two local ladies who are food bloggers.  Darlene of My Burning Kitchen discovered my blog due to a link on M-Theory’s Facebook page to my post about Peter Hook.  She contacted me through Twitter and we started to chat.  Through Darlene, I met the lovely rocker girl of Pink Candles at Ridgemont High (I will respect her choice to remain annonymous, so I’ll just call her Pink Candles).  Both have posted very sweet comments on my blog, and through email exchanges, we discovered that we each have quite a few things in common, mainly to do with loving the 80’s.  Darlene shares my love of Duran Duran and groups like Depeche Mode and New Order.  Pink Candles is more a hard rocker, which actually equates to our mutual love of metallic spikes and edge in our style (she had killer boots on when we met up).  After a few Tweets and many emails later, we decided it would be fun to meet up.

Pink Candles arranged when and where, which I fully supported because I definitely would trust food bloggers to pick a more than suitable place to eat!  She choose the Eclipse Chocolat Bar & Bistro in eclectic South Park.  It was the perfect time of day to have their Sweet & Savory Bunch special, which is $16 for three plates.  After having a salted mocha with homemade marshmellows, I started brunch with the rosemary potato wedges in a burnt caramel hollandaise sauce.  Very savory indeed!  Sadly, I don’t recall what Darlene and Pink Candles each had for their starters.

DSC00632 (2) (1280x897)

DSC00635 (2) (1280x1280)

Next we had our main dishes, all pictured below.  Darlene had the grilled panini (left), I had the build-a-benedict topped with brown sugar-pulled pork with a chile burnt caramel hollandaise sauce (middle), and Pink Candles had the mushroom thyme quiche (right).  We all shared bits of our main dishes with each other and although my dish was very good, I liked Pink Candles choice of quiche.  That flaky pastry was quite heavenly.

DSC00633 (2) (1280x896)

DSC00628 (2) (1280x853)

We closed with the sweet portion of brunch.  I think it was an accident that both Darlene and Pink Candles ordered the same dessert, which was the burnt caramel apple cobbler.  Now, that was a very interesting and very savory dessert because it was spicy, sweet, creamy and rich.  The chile burnt caramel hollandaise sauce blended well with my build-a-benedict so the heat of the spice was more mild.  But the spice was very prominent when used over the cobbler.  I’m going to have to bring my girls Janice and Regi here, because I have found a new favorite dessert, which was the frozen peanut butter mousse.  All elements of this dessert worked so well together and I just couldn’t get enough, even though I was a bit full from my starter and main dish.  Next time, I will go there just for that dessert with a cup of coffee.  So. Good.

After brunch, we strolled around South Park for a little bit, taking in some shopping.  Pink Candles bought a few goodies and I vowed to go back there after Lent and explore more in depth the stores that we visited that day:  Bad Madge, The Make Good, Junc Life & Style and Graffiti Beach.

And finally, pictured below are the desserts that both Darlene and Pink Candles each made and brought to share (as the sole fashion blogger not knowing this food blogger ritual, I came empty handed).  Pink Candles made the yummy blueberry mochi cake and Darlene made the equally delicious yellow cake with sour cream chocolate frosting (the cake & frosting recipes are on her blog here).  Pink Candles even made beautiful earrings for each of us (I have wore my pair to the Alicia Keys concert).  I like this ritual, and I will definitely bring something the next time we all meet up!  I have found new friends in Darlene and Pink Candles, and you can be sure that this will not be the only time I go on an outting with these beautiful and fun food bloggers.

Foodie Fever: An Adventure Time Mini-Cupcake Party!

photo (2) (1280x960)

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen some prototypes of my attempt to create a themed mini-cupcake display for my niece’s Adventure Time birthday party (Mei-Lin is pictured above, dressed as Fionna the Human, which is Finn’s gender swapped version).  After watching several episodes of Cupcake Wars and many trial mini-cupcakes later, I figured out how I wanted to set up the table and which characters I would feature.  To make the process go by more quickly, I did use all Pillsbury products: boxed cake flavors in strawberry, yellow and chocolate with a vanilla cream frosting.  I also used a mini-cupcake maker that was given to me by my mother-in-law.  I liked using it because each batch only took 8 minutes to bake.  The cupcakes cooled very quickly, and I was able to make 150 in a few hours.  The next day, I executed my final designs and display, just a few hours before the party.  I was very happy with the finished product, and received many compliments at Mei-Lin’s party.  Next project: cupcakes from scratch!

These were the prototypes of the final product.  Originally, I only chose four different cupcakes, but Mei-Lin added one more later.

Weekend in Pictures: The Nutella Breakfast Tour & The Target + Neiman Marcus Collection

IMG_4705

I know it’s a Friday, and I usually do my “Weekend in Pictures” posts on a Monday, but I had to move this to accommodate my niece’s birthday post.  I’ve spoken about my love for Nutella in a couple of posts (here and here), and my hubby has been eating Nutella since he was five, back when he visited Germany.  Although it’s not very Whole30, my family had to visit their truck when I heard that the Nutella Breakfast Tour was coming to San Diego.  They made a stop at the Mission Valley Mall, and we got free samples, stickers and shirts.  I think I was way more excited than my husband or son about the whole event!

On the same weekend, I checked out the Target + Neiman Marcus Collection.  I was glad to see that the Target at the Mission Valley Mall was pretty well stocked.  I’ve had my eye on the Proenza Schouler sweatshirt, so that was the only thing I bought during that visit (it’s completely adorable, and I’ll be sure to think up an outfit to post).  I think I’m going to have to sneak off on my own to spend a little more time looking at everything to see if I like anything else (the Marc Jacobs rose gold pouch, Brian Atwood studded leather gloves and Prabal Gurung cape come to mind).  This is not at all a hint to my husband for possible Christmas gift ideas…

My hubby will be off this weekend to see the Pittsburgh Steelers play the San Diego Chargers in the Steel City with his buddy.  Since I had my girl’s trip with Janice this summer in Europe, it’s only fitting that he has a get away as well to see his all time favorite team with just the boys.  We’ll be busy celebrating Mei-Lin’s birthday with a get together, which will be this weekend as well (I’m making the cake, so I’ll post pictures of the finished product).  Hope you have a great weekend!

Another Great Whole30 Homemade Treat

Samantha, one of the gals in my Whole30 Facebook page group, came up with a great snack that actually satisfied my craving for a frozen treat.  I couldn’t believe how simple and easy it was, and it really tastes just like ice cream.  The ingredients: a frozen banana, coconut milk and cinnamon.  I blended them together and added fresh strawberries.  I then placed the whole bowl in the freezer for about 15 more minutes and out came a delicious Whole30 approved dessert!

Whole30 Home Cooking & Thoughts So Far

I have been referring to my Whole30 group on Facebook each day for recipe ideas in addition to support, and I tried my first Whole30 approved recipe at home while I was in Las Vegas.  I apologize for the appearance of my pancakes.  I was in my mother-in-law’s kitchen and did not have all of my utensils at my disposal.  The recipe came from the blog, With A Ch (post seen here), and Christin’s pictures are far and away more appetizing looking than what I created.  I made the same basic recipe (eggs and banana blended with cinnamon for the batter) and cooked them with a light brush of extra virgin olive oil on my pan.  The only change was that I added fresh strawberries rather than try to make warm fruit syrup.  I really enjoyed these pancakes, and I promise to post better pictures at my next attempt (believe me, adding the cinnamon really made these taste like french toast).  I feel that it’s something that I can have often because it’s easy to vary the taste by changing the fruit that will accompany the pancakes.

As this posts, this will be day 17 of the Whole30 program, and all in all I’m feeling pretty good.  I can definitely say that the most difficult part was the first five days, and then trying eat with a group of friends during a late night excursion in Las Vegas.  Other than that, it’s been fun to challenge myself to eat a greater variety of foods.  For instance, I have never tried spaghetti squash before, and I had it for the first time last week because I wanted to have “pasta” with my son and husband.  So while they had the regular spaghetti, I had the squash as my alternative and it was quite good and surprisingly easy to make (I’ll post pictures when I make it again).  My husband says he’s proud of my committment and I’ll have to say, so am I.  Once you take that deep dive, the rest is actually smooth sailing!

What I’ve discovered

As far as how I feel mentally and physically, I feel great.  I was tired at first, but I’ve read it’s because my body is getting used to functioning without all of the processed foods and preservatives.   I’ve read some reactions of others who have gone through this program, but I’ve discovered a few things about myself that I wanted to share.

Less bloating

I noticed immediately that I am far less bloated.  I thought bloating was specific to my time of the month, but I realize now that it could be that the bloating was being caused by what I’ve been eating.  My dresses seem to fit better and so to my jeans.  I don’t excercise much, but I do feel my belly getting flatter and flatter.

*Gulp* You mean I don’t really need coffee?!

Oh my, I hate to admit this because I have lauded my coffee praises for so long now, but I haven’t needed coffee in the mornings like I used to!  I have been a double espresso kinda girl for years now, knowing that my headaches would arrive quickly if I didn’t have my fix, but I have found that the only time I needed any coffee was to ensure that I stayed awake during our drive to and from Las Vegas earlier this month.  Other than that, I nurse my morning cup-o-Joe to the point where I take a couple sips and I’m fine.  So was I really addicted to the caffeine or the cream and sugar that I put in it?  I think I’ll be able to solidify my findings at the end of the month.

I miss bread & pasta more than sweets

I thought I would miss chessecake, cupcakes, pies, ice cream, candy, and chocolate, but not as much as I thought.  I will admit here and now that I miss croissants, bread, rolls, tortillas, and any baked good.  I also miss any and all pastas.  I think I was more a carb person than a sweets person, which goes against everything I understood about my “sweet tooth” growing up.  Is there such a thing as a “carb tooth”?  If so, I think I have it.

Just do it!

Despite what kind of cravings you have and what your eating habits are, if you’ve heard about this program and want to try it, just do it.  Knowing my own eating habits, I was also worried, but this program will alter your way of thinking about food completely.  If anything, I think I’ve gained a greater appreciation for the large variety of foods that are out there other than the processed and easy alternatives.  It’s really so much easier than you think it will be and the results are worth it!

My First Whole30 Restaurant Experience at True Food Kitchen

Last week, I went out to eat with my good friend, Angi.  We planned to go to a Vodka tasting dinner prior to my committing to the Whole30 challenge.  As the day came closer to the dinner, I explained what I was doing and she suggested going to the True Food Kitchen at the Fashion Valley mall in Mission Valley.  She said that they have a lot of gluten-free meals and all of the food is completely fresh and has no additives.  The reason I was excited about eating there was that I knew they would understand if I asked to have something prepared a certain way.

Such a wonderful space, even with temptation in the background (in the form of cheesecake)…

We first started off with a couple of drinks.  Angi had the Kale Aid, which seemed a little too intense for my first experience there (kale, apple, cucumber, celery, lemon and ginger).  I opted for the Hangover Rx, which consisted of coconut water, pineapple and fresh squeezed orange juice.  This drink was so refreshing and actually tasted like ice cream (almost like a 50/50 bar).  It was a nice complement to the meal I was about to have.

A Hangover Rx and a Kale Aid

Angi was torn between a salad or an entrée, but decided to get the Ricotta Cheese Ravioli.  Knowing I had to be a bit more picky for my meal, it also took me a bit to make my choice.  I finally settled down on the Panang Curry, not only because it had been awhile since I had a good curry, but because it seemed the easiest to alter to fit my Whole30 needs.  When I mentioned to our server that I was doing a Paleo style diet and needed to have my dish altered, he knew instantly what I meant and that they most definitely would be able to remove the brown rice and potatoes.  This left ginger, carrot, mushroom, broccoli in a coconut shellfish broth, and I had chicken added for my protein source.  This dish was so delicious, but with just enough of a kick to make the dish quite flavorful (my Hangover Rx drink actually helped to quell the slight heat of the broth).  I was so pleased that my appetite was satisfied without being overly full.

Without a doubt, I will be visiting True Food Kitchen a few more times during my Whole30 experience, and will return again afterwards to take full advantage of their menu.  I feel confident that my husband and son would also enjoy it because the meals are quite tasty, but also incredibly healthy to boot.  Cheers!

Panang Curry (sans brown rice & potato).  Whole30 approved, no?
