All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records

Last week, I became a backer for a documentary project by actor Colin Hanks.  It’s called “All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records“.  I first heard about it through a Tweet by Bella Q of The Citizen Rosebud, and immediately became interested.  I recently wrote about my love for the independent record store here, and I mentioned that one of my favorites was Tower Records.  The one I frequented was right next to what was then called The San Diego Sports Arena, which is pictured below (it is currently called the Valley View Casino Center).  Whenever I would go to a concert at the Sports Arena, I would make sure to stop in at Tower.  I’ve even attended a couple of signings at Tower Records: Robin Hitchcock and Maroon 5.  My sister met Brian Setzer and Hot Rod Lincoln at Tower as well.

We went with my niece when she was merely a year old to shop one last time at Tower Records back in 2006.  Even then we knew the impact of the store closing and made it an event simply because of our history with the store.

Funding for the project closed on July 15, 2011.  The pledge I chose was the “VIP Package”:

PACKAGE INCENTIVE VIP Package: The Full Monty…sticker, poster, T-Shirt, DVD and vinyl record. Both DVD and record signed by Tower Records founder Russ Solomon and Director Colin Hanks and a special “Thank You” in the film credits. DVD and record shipping date TBD after film release.

I am unsure of the timeline of the project, but I will be sure to post updates as I receive them.  You can follow the project through the link I provided above, or on the following links for Facebook and Twitter.

My eyes are closed! I guess I just couldn’t bear to look at Tower Records before departing its premises…

Randomness: Blood, Sweat & Joy!

Just two quick features to take you into the weekend, one is a new discovery and another I’ve been waiting for since last summer!

It’s about bloody time!

I am a big fan of the show True Blood on HBO.  The series came out when I was pregnant with Dominic.  After seeing the first episode on an HBO preview weekend, I told my husband that he needed to sit with me and watch one of the repeats because I think I found a new favorite.  We promptly ordered HBO just to watch the rest of the season.  During maternity leave, I read most of the Sookie Stackhouse books and we have been hooked ever since.   As to whether or not I am “Team Bill” or “Team Eric”, I love all sexy vampires equally.

One of my favorite bloggers, B of Beautifully Invisible, is also a True Blood fan.  In honor of the arrival of season 4, I am featuring her post called “5 Things HBO’s True Blood Taught Me About Fashion & Beauty“.  I’ve listed my favorite lesson, but the whole post is clever and absolutely brilliant.  Sunday just cannot come fast enough!

4. There is a time and place for sweats and tracksuits

How many of you would wear your sweats to work or for a night on the town? Anyone? Unless you happen to work at a gym, the answer is likely no one. There is a definite time and place for sweats and tracksuits and, as Pam De Beaufort and Eric illustrate below, most have to do with physical activity. In those instances comfort is key and the appropriate attire will make your life much easier. That being said  don’t forget to add some edginess or glamour by accessorizing! – Beautifully Invisible

Love at first listen:  The Joy Formidable

I love it when I stumble upon something that I can truly say has stirred something in me.  Last weekend, I was on Twitter and saw a Tweet from Mark Hoppus (@markhoppus) from Blink 182 saying this: “This song gives me goosebumps every. single. time.”  It was accompanied by a You Tube link.  He’s quite the funny guy, so I thought maybe it was something humorous.  This link was quite the opposite.  It was to a song called “Whirring” by a Welsh group called The Joy Formidable.

I must say, I was moved.  The live version of this song starts off quietly, but with atmosphere.  The song then builds into a crazy frenzy that does not let go until the very end.  “Whirring” is stirring and powerful all at once.  I can see why Mark gets goosebumps every single time.

I’m still finding out about this fantastic new band, but here is the video that started it all.  I will make the investment to buy their EP “A Balloon Called Moaning” and their album “The Big Roar” because it’s about time that something good gave me a bit of a break from my addiction to 80’s alternative.

Limited Editions

I wanted to post some news about a couple of “limited editions” related to Depeche Mode.  First, I read on The Quietus that Martin Gore and Vince Clarke are teaming up on a new techno album (article here).

Speaking to Billboard, Gore said “Out of the blue I got an e-mail from [Vince Clarke] just saying, ‘I’m interested in making a techno album. Are you interested in collaborating?’ This was maybe nine months, a year ago. He said, ‘No pressure, no deadlines,’ so I said, ‘OK,’ and that’s what we’ve been doing the last six months.” – The Quietus

As you have seen from previous posts, Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder both recently produced mixes on Depeche Mode’s 81-11 Remix album.  Could this new collaboration mean other ones are in the works?  Oh, one could only dream that they would also include Alan!

Speaking of limited editions, look what popped up in my mailbox recently.  Yes, it’s true.  It is the Record Store Day, four song, limited edition “Personal Jesus” 12″ single, and it’s MINE (seen here).  When I called Lou’s Records June 7th, I thought I had missed out on this extremely rare piece of vinyl (see original post here).  But I think Neil at Lou’s (who answered the phone at the time), must have heard the disappointment in my voice as he said “The last one literally walked out the door about 10 minutes ago!” and remembered how much I wanted it.  Even when I received the Paypal invoice stating “Depeche Mode 3CD w/ promo 12” I still didn’t believe it.  It wasn’t until I saw the large album shaped box that it finally dawned on me that I now own it.  I called Lou’s back and they said that someone had canceled their order so they sent it to me as soon as I paid the invoice.  I consider myself very lucky to have this.  I am now going to play the Lotto.

Randomness: Music for the Masses

I see that I have a few new followers, so firstly I would like to say “Welcome to my blog!”  Although this blog is heavier on personal style and fashion, I definitely have a keen interest in music.  Be forewarned that my musical interests are mainly tied to 80’s alternative, especially Depeche Mode, Recoil, Joy Division, OMD, Duran Duran and bands in the same genre.  This means that most of the music news that I report on will be centered around these groups and this type of music.  If you want to get to know more on my musical taste and interest, the “Musically Inclined” category is a great start.  In the meantime, here are some musical tidbits that I’ve either received an email about, found on Facebook or have received a Tweet about.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Independence (Record Store) Day – With the release of Depeche Mode’s Remixes: 81-11 on June 7th came several exclusives.  One I nearly had in my hands, had I gotten myself together earlier in the day.  On Depeche Mode’s official site, they posted several independent record stores that would have a very rare and exclusive 12″ single as a gift when purchasing the 3 CD or 6 LP Remixes release.  Pictured on the left, it was a four song, promo only 12″ single of “Personal Jesus”.  This is how I discovered “Record Store Day“.

The gist of what I understand this to be is that artists create special and exclusive products for their new record/album releases, and distribute these items to only independently owned record stores.  These stores cannot be corporate chain stores and truly celebrates the indie record business.

I think this is a great endeavor because I have almost exclusively patronized independent record stores my entire life and I only go to the bigger chains when I have no alternative.  Since I was a teen, I have gone to local stores like Licorice Pizza before they were sold to a large chain, and Blue Meannie before they became exclusively a store for the metal genre.  The only “large chain” music store I frequented before their demise in 2006 was Tower Records because of the music they stocked and the awesome people that worked there.  Music stores that I shop at now include CSL, Lou’s Records, M-Theory and Amoeba (they all participate in Record Store Day).   I firmly believe that all music enthusiasts should do their part and support independently owned music stores and I’m excited to know that artists feel the same way by driving sales towards these types of stores.

Alan Wilder Auctions His Goods – I’m now on Twitter more and more, and I discovered that this is also a great place to get news as it happens.  Through Recoil (@recoilofficial and @Recoilboss), it has been announced that Alan Wilder has decided to sell some of his beloved equipment, vinyl and memorabilia that he has collected over the years.  The items range from Depeche Mode rarities, instruments that he’s held on to, and even clothing he has worn to pictorials and videos (although I find it odd to purchase his pants).  You can browse through the items at  The Alan Wilder/Depeche Mode Collection website.  One of my friends stated that he spent 2 hours looking through everything and reading Alan’s comments because it’s like a history lesson Depeche Mode and Recoil.  The actual auction takes place on September 3, 2011 in Manchester, England and online.  If you are a die-hard fan, you will not want to miss this fantastic opportunity.

Girl Panic” Video Shoot – I follow John Taylor of Duran Duran on Twitter (@ThisIsTheRealJT and @duranduran), and there was Tweets galore regarding the new video for the song “Girl Panic” from their album “All You Need is Now”, filmed earlier this week.  Yasmin Le Bon was reunited with her model friends Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, and Helena Christensen for this video.  I’m excited to see the new video, but still worried about Simon Le Bon, who is recovering from a throat ailment that has sidelined their tour in the UK and Europe.   In the meantime, here are some shots from the video shoot on Fashionologie here.

It’s Time to DANCE with DJ Lance Rock!  If you have kids, you definitely know about the phenomenon that is Yo Gabba Gabba!  It’s a show about four crazy characters (Brobee, Toodee, Foofa, Muno and Plex) and their adventures with their ringleader, DJ Lance Rock aka Lance Robinson.  What I love about the show is that they feature so many good sing-a-long songs that teach lessons in an incredible fun and catchy way.  But the best part of the show are their musical and celebrity guests.  Past performers and guests include The Faint, The Shins, Jimmy Eat World, Chromeo, The Ting Tings, The Roots, Jack Black, and Elijah Wood.

I received a Tweet from @amoebamusic that you can see DJ Lance Rock up close and personal because he performs a DJ set on June 25, 2011 at Hollywood Amoeba location (details here).  Maybe he’ll do a little “Dancey-Dance” with his Gabbaland pals!

Rewind Festival: My Kind of Coachella

Wow.  I recently watched a 2 hour concert called “80’s Rewind Festival” on Classic VH1 and I actually felt my mind get blown.  We don’t have anything like this here in the states:  All 80’s groups in a festival setting like Coachella.  If you’ve been reading my blog lately, I’m having to do my own 80’s tour by going to all of my favorite former artists, but one at a time.  In the last 5 years, I’ve seen artists like Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Depeche Mode/Alan Wilder, George Michael, and OMD.

The name of the actual event is called “Rewind Festival“, and began back in 2009 and took place at Temple Island Meadows, Remenham, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England.  From what I read, this festival was put together because of the success of a few one-off 80’s retro shows.  Check out these line ups (2009 and 2010 lists are from Wikipedia):

Talking Loud & Clear: OMD in Concert

First and foremost, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY SISTER RHOLNNA!

On Sunday, I took my sister to see OMD in concert as a birthday present. We went with my best friend Janice, then met up with a few other friends at the actual show. OMD is for my sister the way Depeche Mode is for me.  I made a statement that we would not only see OMD in concert, but we would have to meet the band somehow because I had already met Alan Wilder. The last time I actually saw OMD in concert was with my sister back in the late 80’s. The next time I saw any advertisement of a show was in London in 2008, and my husband and I were not staying long enough to see the concert. When I saw the ad for OMD in San Diego on Facebook, I knew I was on a mission for my sister’s birthday.

I decided to wear my Joy Division shirt to the show because I know that OMD and Joy Division had toured together in the very early 80’s. In fact, the song “Statues” by OMD was written in part for Ian Curtis after his death. Later when we arrived for the show, I was intrigued and pleasantly surprised to see that I was not the only one wearing a Joy Division shirt (I saw 3 other people wearing them). I had also been stopped several times by people telling me how much they liked my shirt. To me, that signified that this crowd were truly OMD fans who understood and appreciated their history.

Outfits:  Previously remixed – Joy Division t-shirt; Jeffrey Campbell shoes/Not worn yet – H&M blazer; Guess skinny jeans; Betsey Johnson cross-body bag

On Rholnna – Mossimo jacket; Oh La La tank; Paris Blues jeans; Wild Diva boots

On Janice – Soho t-shirt (souvenir from NYC from yours truly); NY & Co jeans; Cathy Jean boots; Harajuku purse

The evening actually began with dinner at the Sushi Deli in Downtown San Diego, which was walking distance from the concert venue. My sister and I had never been there before, but Janice had previously been to a different location. The food and drinks were great, and the bartenders were fun. It was nice to just sit and enjoy a good meal before going to a highly anticipated show. Once we arrived back to the venue, 4th & B, we had discovered that the line had wrapped around the building! We were glad to see that there was still interest in OMD, because it would mean a lively crowd.

The opening act was a local band called Inspired Flight. I really wanted to give this band a chance, as they did hail from San Diego. They really had an eclectic sound, going from danceable synth-pop to slower driving hip-hop. But the hot room and crowded floor made us all the more anxious for the main act to hit the stage.

Steve West, one of my favorite deejays from 91X (a local alternative radio station), came onstage to introduce the band and mentioned that this show had sold out. Once OMD arrived onstage, they did so with purpose:  we were about to be fully entertained. They started off the night with “New Babies, New Toys” off of their new album called “History of Modern”. Although I’m not too familiar with the whole album yet, I recognized “History of Modern (Part 1)”, “If You Want To”, “New Holy Ground” and “Sister Marie Says”. The rest of the evening was a must see for any OMD fan, as they went far back into their early history with tracks from albums such as  “Architecture & Morality”, “Junk Culture” and “The Pacific Age” all the way to “Sugar Tax”.

The highlights were songs I had been waiting a couple of decades to hear again live. Songs like “Tesla Girls”, “Locomotion”, “So in Love”, “(Forever) Live & Die” and “Enola Gay” made me jump up and sing every word. A surprise for me was “Talking Loud & Clear” as I had not seen this on set lists when scouring the forums for any and all information of what they might play.  This post was coincidentally titled prior to knowing they would play the song in concert. My sister, already full of emotion, nearly cried when “Souvenir” and “Dreaming” were played.

One of the biggest hits played was “If You Leave” from the “Pretty In Pink” soundtrack, to which they prefaced by saying that this was a song highly criticized for being their “sell out” song.   Despite this admission, they kept true to the long-time fans and played songs like “Messages”, “Joan of Arc” and another surprise which was “Radio Waves” from the album “Dazzle Ships”.  They closed the show with their first single “Electricity”, which perfectly described Andy McCluskey’s dancing. He reminded the crowd that he is now past 50, so we would have to just accept his dancing, although it was humorously stated quite differently in concert. An obvious omission I noted was “Secret”, a big hit from the album “Crush”. I will have to investigate why this was not played among all of the excellent selections for the evening.

A treat for all of us was that we were able to meet Paul Humphreys and Andy after the concert, as they came outside and signed autographs and posed for pictures with around at least 30 die-hard fans. Luckily our car was parked directly outside the backstage doors, so we were able to see the crowd develop and stuck around just in case. Paul and Andy were gracious and funny. They wished my sister a happy birthday, and Andy gave me a big hug saying “Look at you in your Joy Division shirt!”

If you are at all an 80’s music fan, OMD is a must see in concert. They seemed genuinely surprised and happy at the reaction of the crowd, and their energy and interaction with each other made for an unforgettable night. Andy stated that they would return to San Diego, which would mean that we will definitely go back for another round of the electrically charged OMD.

Recoil Events in April & May 2011

Oh you lucky Brits! As if I didn’t want to live in England more than I already do, Recoil will be presenting shows on two dates: one in April and one in May of this year. Maybe this will inspire Alan Wilder to take another jaunt around the world, hopefully returning back to Southern California? One can only hope.

I think this first one is pretty self-explanatory by the flier pictured here. Recoil will be playing the first date of the Back to the Phuture festival at Academy 1 in Manchester on Friday April 1st, 2011. The second half of the festival will be in London.

Here is the full line up for Manchester: Gary Numan, Recoil, Motor, Richard H Kirk DJ set, Mark Jones DJ set

The second show is the Short Circuit festival by Roundhouse with a weekend hosted by Mute Records, Depeche Mode’s UK record label. Recoil will perform live on Friday May 1st 2011, along with artists like Nitzer Ebb and a live DJ set by Daniel Miller. On Saturday May 2nd, Erasure will be performing and there will be a special appearance by Alison Moyet (not necessarily with Erasure, but who knows?).

Those of you lucky enough to be in the area, have fun at the shows and know that there will be a very jealous gal in San Diego, wishing she were there, too. Cheers!

(All information was from the Shunt, Roundhouse and Back to the Phuture websites)

Upcycle & DIY Chic

When there’s a small bit of idle time (usually while my son is sleeping), I’ll go on the web looking for something, which leads to one thing then another. That’s how I found the following upcycle clothing site.

I saw an ad for Do-Over Clothes on Facebook and clicked on the link. The back story of Rique, the creator of these one of a kind pieces, is that she hated to see good cashmere discarded by second-hand stores just because of a slight imperfection. She buys those pieces and creates new and beautiful things, which is the very definition of upcycling. This piece here is called “Whisper + Cashmere“. It’s a feather-light tee with a cashmere vest. I really like the juxtaposition of the tee against the cashmere, especially with the asymmetrical lines. I also love the fact that they are two separate pieces.

At the Threads show I went to last year, I really got to know upcycling (see post here) and I’m starting to really embrace the movement. Now that my friend Sara is taking sewing classes, she’s going to help me rework some older pieces that I have in my closet, including a vintage purse that I purchased on eBay awhile ago (which is not the clutch purse that I started last November, which I also need to complete).

Speaking of projects and upcycling, check out a fantastic purse that Sara made (see the picture below). When we met for lunch last Thursday, I recognized the shape of the purse she was carrying because we bought the exact same one a few years ago during one of our many shopping excursions. We each bought these cute leather purses by Dutchy, she had one in white and mine was in my obligatory black. They have these cute reflective circles that are sewn into the leather, which is what drew us to the purses (see picture on the right). The problem is that due to how the large sequins pieces are afixed to the leather, they started to fall off. I don’t think you can see it in the picture, but two have already fallen off, and Sara said most of the one’s on her purse are gone.

Like Sara, I haven’t had the heart to discard this cute little number. I love the shape and drawstring sides, but it pains me that the sequins will all eventually fall off. She and I kept these purses in our closets for at least five years. When we sat down to lunch, I said to her that recognized the shape of the purse and asked her if that was the purse that we bought together in LA. She said yes, and explained to me how she transformed from the purse you see above, to the fantastic creation in the picture to the left. She loved the pom-pom purses of Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney, and found a DIY site called PS I Made This that inspired her to do it herself. The creator, Erica Domesek, is a DIY diva and shows how to do it this awesome project in an easy step by step seen here. Sara actually used a different adhesive, and I will do a demo of this project as soon as I get the pom poms I ordered from amazon.com.

If this project is as easy as it seems, hopefully it will motivate me to finish my elusive clutch purse that I just can’t seem to complete (see the original post of my unfinished project here)!

My Favorite Mode: Rarities

I had to think long and hard about what Depeche Mode rarities are my favorites, which is why it took awhile to do another installment of “My Favorite Mode”. Keep in mind that these are the rare items from my very own collection (please refer to depmod.com for a more exhaustive list). These are cool little gems that I’ve collected over the years, and three just got a little more worthy because Alan Wilder signed them (the “Love In Itself” numbered 12 inch single, the “Some Great Reward” grey vinyl, and the “Everything Counts” 10 inch single). I was too afraid to bring the “Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth” flexidisc to the signing because it’s so thin and incredibly rare.
