Simply Red

DSC03266 (2) (1280x1280)

These pictures were taken last November in Las Vegas outside of the famous Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino, at the Fremont Street Experience.  Believe it or not, although my husband was born and raised in Las Vegas, this was the first time he had ever been to the Fremont Street Experience (more pictures to come).  We were able to snap some pictures of my comfy yet pulled together outfit, amidst all of the craziness of the evening.  I’ve always wanted a simple red coat, and I was so excited to have the opportunity to own this one, courtesy of J.Jill from their grand opening at Fashion Valley (post here).

I think seeing Spider-Man (in the mirror above) inspired my boys to strike some hero poses.

Photo bombing is always going to be a hazard when taking pictures in a busy area.

Back to Basics on Black Friday

Dominic stayed with Deon’s parents while we ventured out on Black Friday, so I accompanied him to the Wildhorse Golf Club in Las Vegas.  I really can only handle the front nine holes, and Deon being the intuitive husband that he is, said that I should go shopping for the back nine holes.  Not wanting to spend the time parking at the nearby Town Square Mall (although I absolutely love that mall), I decided to go to a local strip mall to get my shopping fix in.

I found a few very cute things at Old Navy that were mostly basics.  I found out recently that my sister had commandeered my father’s military pea coat, so I needed to get one of my own.  I found the perfect navy blue “Prep Coat” for only $29.95.  This is a classic that will stay a staple in my wardrobe.

Right next to the coat, I found another prefect item: black skinny cargo pants that I’ve been on the hunt for (they are the same exact ones in the picture, just black).  At $10, I felt fashionably and frugally fabulous.  Because the deals were just so great, I was able to get my niece’s birthday/Christmas outfit, a nice little outfit for my son and and outfit for my husband.  But I’ll definitely be working these great basic items into my wardrobe in the days to come.

How Far Would You Go to Get What You Want?

For my Coat of the Week, I’m going back a little bit in time to 2008 for a fun little story of how I got my beautiful teal coat.

I saw a version of this jacket on ASOS and loved it.  I would have purchased it for the £70 they were asking for at the time because I was attracted to the color, shape and ruffles.  Then as if it were fate, I received an email  update from Catwalk Queen (see my Blogroll), reporting that Primark had the same jacket for only £25.  I sadly discovered that Primark does not have does not have an online store, which meant that I had to actually go to a store to purchase it if I wanted the great price (click the picture for a link to the Catwalk Queen 2008 blog entry about the coat).

As luck would have it, my husband and I already had a trip planned to see the San Diego Chargers vs the New Orleans Saints game at Wembley Stadium (yes, American football).  This meant that I could get my coat in person and try it on!

Once in London, we made the trek to the Primark on Oxford Street because we tried one in Wembley near our hotel and they didn’t have the coveted jacket.  Not knowing just how far it was up or down Oxford Street Primark was, we hopped off of one of the Tube stops on Oxford and ended up walking many, many blocks before actually getting to the Primark store in question (I was just reminded by my wonderful and understanding husband that it was eight blocks or so).  At five months pregnant on a cold October evening, I must have been very determined to get this coat to have walked that far.

We arrived at the store about 30 minutes before closing and almost didn’t find the coats because it was a madhouse, apparently due to a huge sale.  My only worry was not getting the fit that I wanted because I was showing and I would definitely want to wear it many times after pregnancy.  A wonderful thing about this coat is that it is very forgiving and roomy in the waist area, which was discovered after a very quick try-on.  This meant I could get my regular size and still have it roomy enough while pregnant.  We were not about to try to come back again the next day so we had to rush to the register, passed the crowds of people doing the very same.

After my triumphant purchase, we headed outside only to discover that a Tube stop was only a block away on the opposite side of the street.  Whilst heading to said stop, a chase had occurred right outside of Primark where a well dressed security guard tackled a would-be shoplifter and dragged her back across the street and back into the store.  On the way back, we stopped at New Look and then a small department store (I think called BHS?) where my husband purchased one of a few remote control mini-helicopters.

All in all, a very eventful day.  There are so many details I can remember and the memories all come flooding back each time I wear my beautiful teal coat.

Coat of the Week: Semi-Casual Friday

After a full morning of taking care of some things for my mom yesterday, my sister came over in the afternoon to help me with some of my “Coat of the Week” pictures.  I think she did a great job, don’t you?

A cashier at the grocery store said to me, “I love that jacket, you must be receiving tons of compliments on it!  It’s something that can make any outfit feel sexy, either dressed up or down.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Coat of the Week: Minor Setback

As my husband and I were setting up for pictures of the first outfit for my “Coat of the Week” pictorial, we experienced a minor setback:  I broke my camera.  I was walking away from my husband while handing him the camera and didn’t realize that my hand was still in the strap.  Next thing I know…crash!  My little Canon Power Shot never stood a chance against that tough pavement.  We need to send it into the manufacturer to get it fixed.

We managed to get a picture before it completely stopped working.  Luckily for us, we have more than one working camera.  I’ll be using either a Pentax Optio 750Z or my husband’s Sony A (alpha) 350.

When at first you don’t succeed…try, try again!

Coat of the Week

Since we are going back to “business casual” at my job, I’m going to start something to spark some creativity with my clothing.  I will pick a coat or jacket out from my wardrobe and post a picture of it at the beginning of the week.  I will then post pictures of my favorite outfits I create to go with that coat.  This could be daily or just a couple of outfits during the week, depending on how well the outfits work out.  I will then choose a different coat or jacket the following week and repeat.

This will be a fun and creative endeavor, so I hope you will enjoy what you see!  Here is the first coat that I will use this week:   The Rodarte for Target leopard print jacket that I purchased on eBay a couple of weeks ago (seen here).  I’ve been wearing it with all black lately, but I will infuse a little color and see what I can come up with.
