Pieces From A Working Mom’s Wardrobe

I know that as mothers, we need to find balance with what’s important.  Taking care of family is definitely on the top of my list, but it’s important to remember to take care of yourself, too.  To me, looking good and feeling good are also on the same list.  As a working mother of a rambunctious 2-year-old, I struggle all the time with functional style.  How can I look and feel effortless?  Here are some things that I do to make it easy for myself to stay stylish.

1.  Easy, low maintenance fabrics – I would love for most of my weekend or casual wardrobe to be items that I can just grab and go with very little to no fuss.  This is why I have started to select pieces in my wardrobe that require no ironing, or what my husband calls “ironing by dryer” (throwing an item in the dryer for 10 minutes on high, then smooth out the wrinkles).  Some of these pieces are not always work clothes or clothes for an evening out, but are functional yet stylish pieces that I can literally throw on when I need to run to the store with Dominic in tow.  An example is the dress pictured above from Lulus.com.  It is 100% sheer polyester with a built-in lining.  I can wear it with a little cardigan or denim jacket, boots or sandals, grab my purse and his baby bag, then I’m ready to go.  I’m still completely comfortable, but I feel quite stylish.

2.  Versatile mid-heel and flat-heel shoes – I am a very big shoe fanatic, so it’s hard to believe that I would wear anything but knock-out-show-stopping heels.  Although I definitely do own those types of shoes, they aren’t practical for my everyday life.  Many of my casual shoes are like the boots pictured above, or the shoes pictured below.  The Jeffrey Campbell “Kelley” shoes look like any other Oxford in styling, but are like sandals due to the cut-outs on either side.  I’ve worn them with skirts, shorts, jeans and work pants (see my “40 for 40 for Lent” category for the many ways I remixed them).  The versatility makes them invaluable for my wardrobe.  But if you really want to know what my ultimate “go to” extreme casual flat is, look no further than the classic canvas Toms shoe, which are pictured in the header of my blog.

3.  When wearing higher heels, make sure they are strong & comfortable, preferably a wedged heel – I always worry about getting any kind of heel for casual day-to-day dressing because I don’t feel very secure in my footing when carrying Dominic, additional bags, or groceries.  I also worry about comfort during any kind of long trip or outing.  But I can attest to the fact that a wedge heel in a practical height will remedy any of those worries, as long as you “test drive” them first.  I just bought the shoes pictured below from DSW by Envy.  They are a medium wedged heel with a 1 inch platform.  I was happy to know when I received these shoes in the mail how well they fit and just how comfortable they are (which means no returns).  They can be worn with shorts and jeans, but I think the best partner for these cute, comfortable and practical shoes are my maxi-dresses and skirts.  Flats never seem to work for me when wearing anything long, so these are the perfect solution.

4.  A versatile grab & go purse – I want a purse that can carry all and should be easy to handle if I need to carry (or chase) my son.  I have two recently purchased bags that I have been interchanging on a daily basis, depending on what I need.  The first is the Moto Hobo bag by Foley + Corinna.  When you join their email list,  not only will you get great deals, but you also receive a $50 gift voucher for any purchase over $200 during the month of your birthday.  I was able to snag this great purse on sale, then added my coupon so I only paid $175 for a purse that was originally $450!  It’s roomy, slouchy and has a great strap drop.  I know I can carry it on my shoulder, but I could carry it cross-body if I have to.  It is in a wonderful supple leather and believe it or not, it’s still available (see the link at the bottom of the page to their website).  My next purchase from them will definitely be either a City or Mid-City tote because of the size and the detachable strap.

My newest obsession is the Morning After Clutch by Rebecca Minkoff.  Since my trip to their recent sample sale, I now own three!  What I like about the MAC is that it is a sleek 11″W x 7.5″H x 3″D with a 14″ strap drop.  This is actually larger than it appears in an online description, once the bag is up close and personal.  The strap is convertible and can either be worn cross-body, shortened to be hand carried or worn on the shoulder, or the strap can be removed to be a clutch.  Inside, there are several pockets and compartments for all of my “little things” that would otherwise get lost at the bottom of a larger purse.  What really has me excited about this purse is the quality.  The leather of two of the MACs I purchased are also soft and supple, like the Foley + Corinna bag.  The hardware is thick and durable.  But overall, it’s just a beautiful purse because everything about it is classic.

That was just a little sneak-peek into what I think about when putting together an outfit or shopping for wardrobe pieces, which is basically practical and functional style that should and be as effortless as it appears.  How do you find your wardrobe/life balance?

Non-Guilty Purchase: Sinful Mary Janes by Gunmetal

Oh, I think these are sexiest mary jane pumps ever.  This is my first purchase from Gilt Groupe since joining it last year.  Aren’t they lovely?  I mentioned these in a previous Friend Friday entry, and they will no doubt appear in more than one upcoming outfit post.

Nordstrom Rack Hits Plaza Bonita Mall!

When I saw the news about Nordie’s Rack hitting our local mall, I thought, “My husband won’t be happy to hear that!”  When I told him, he had the exact reaction that I thought he would: he just gasped.  But of course this fashionista on a budget was elated to see that Westfield’s Plaza Bonita Mall is growing and expanding, which means that I don’t need to go too far to seek out the fantastic deals that my friends always seem to think I have a knack on finding.

Here is an example of why I love going to places like Nordstrom Rack, Last Call, Off 5th, and other “off-price” retail divisions:  it gives consumers a chance to get deals on brands that may not otherwise get affordable prices for.  I wore this Anna Sui jacket in the “So Newly Charming Post” last December.  I bought this jacket at the Nordstrom Rack in the Mission Valley Mall over 15 years ago.  This jacket was originally $750.  I got about 90% off, because I only paid $75!  I wear this jacket all the time, because of its classic double-breasted pea-coat style and sharp pin stripes, which makes it extremely versatile.  Where else would I have an opportunity to get such a fantastic price on a great brand?

I hope you all enjoy this exciting news as much as I do.  Happy shopping!

Birds on a Platform

This is my first outfit post after my “40 for 40” remix, and I’m celebrating it with new shoes.  I know that I said that I was going to get the Grayson shoes by Jeffrey Campbell first (post seen here), but I just couldn’t resist these Piccoo platform pumps by Steve Madden at the price I got them for (after all of my discounts through DSW, I ended up paying only $23!).  I was looking for a neutral-nearly-nude shoe and these are the perfect shade in a very sexy style.  We had casual week at work, but I just couldn’t resist dressing up in my pretty bird frock just to take these shoes for a spin.

Gotta Have Grayson!

I’m in love.  Check out these shoes by Jeffrey Campbell.  These will definitely be a part of my first after Lent binge purchasing spree because they are just too fantastic.  Hello Grayson, my name is Cyrillynn.  Welcome to my closet!

Everything’s Coming Up Roses

Ever since I bought my Michael Kors watch (seen first here), I have been loving the vintage vibe of rose gold. After I received my new Tiffany & Co catalog and saw all the new silver and rose gold charms, rings and necklaces, I started to think about what to wear with rose gold. I’ve been seeing a lot of neutrals and nudes for spring and summer, and I think rose gold would be a great compliment to this type of palette.

Purpose & Re-Purpose: THREADshow 2011

On Sunday April 3rd, I attended the THREADshow at Horton Plaza’s Event Space. I attended the event last September (see the post here), but sadly missed another one in December. I received an email reminder for this seasons show, which allowed me to attend as press this time around. I decided to head there early, and I’m glad I did! Arriving early allows you to not only take advantage of being able to get at the goods first, but it allows you to take in everything with a few go-arounds before committing to the booths you really want to spend some time in.

If you are unfamiliar with the THREADshow, here is a little summary:

About THREAD Show // Good Style. Good Value. Good Karma.
THREAD Show is a travelling juried showcase of the best independent fashion and home designers on the West Coast, and the music and art that rock their world. This dynamic one-day retail environment has showcased more than 7,000 emerging designers since its inception in 2003. THREAD allows consumers a unique opportunity to support their local economy, reduce their carbon footprint and discover emerging designers while scoring deals and purchasing one-of-a-kind wares in a fun and unique setting. For more information, visit www.threadshow.com.

If you like up and coming indie artists, clothing and accessory designers as I do, then you will enjoy this type of event. When I arrived, I bumped into one of my former choir members, who had won tickets from another blog. It was fun to catch up, but once inside, we went our separate ways in order to make it to all of the fantastic booths. I always love walking through the art area first. The coolest part of the gallery this year was the Toygami display, which is a play on origami, Japanese paper-folding art.

There were a couple of new things this year: one was the “Man Cave”, equipped with a bar and putting green. I considered asking my husband to help take pictures, and maybe he would have come if he knew about the “Cave.” What I liked instead of the runway show was the “Live Style Series”, which was a live display of models styled by 5 different local fashion bloggers. Attendees could then vote for their favorite. I will have to keep up on the THREADshow blog so that I can participate in their next blogger event!

After a couple of rounds, I stopped at a rack of eye-catching purses. They were convertible purses with a studded design that looked like the Union Jack. Called “The G Collection, Fashion with a Purpose” I met the creator, Galyn, who showed me around their little booth, which also displayed hats and jewelry. She basically does most of her business through these types of events, and a portion of her sales goes towards philanthropic causes, such as Doctors Without Borders. I knew I wanted one of those studded purses, and hearing everything Galyn had to say made for an easy decision to make a purchase. Already a great deal at $40, it was nice that it was also accompanied by warm feelings of doing something good.

I was very glad to find a knit clothing line out of New Orleans called liaMolly. I was not able to really dive in and look at all they had to offer last year. When I saw their booth this year, I knew I had to stop by and hang out a bit. The line consists of beautiful knit clothing that are not just your typical sweater set. These are delicately crafted retro/vintage looking knits done in exquisite patterns and colors. I found a beautiful kimono-style black sweater and snapped it up at a mere $45. I got the chance to chat with Kaye, the C.O.O of liaMolly, who was very gracious although she was quite busy. I loved the little suitcase display!

I ended my day at a booth called Bottle Hood. My upcycling radar honed in on this display because of the unusual use of Bombay Sapphire and Skyy Vodka bottles that I saw in the distance. I spoke to Leslie of Bottle Hood, who gave me a little background on their concept. Bottles are reclaimed from local restaurants, bars and even local events which would have been thrown out. They use local crafts people to turn these ordinary bottles into fantastic glassware such as tumblers, lamps, vases and candle accessories. Visually, I couldn’t get enough of all of the items, but purchased just 4 pieces of shaped glass that I intend to turn into necklaces. That doesn’t mean that I won’t buy more! The actual store is located in El Cajon, but they also sell their items online. Additionally, they also make appearances at local farmers’ markets and street fairs, accepting bottles that would have been thrown away or recycled, to create more of their wonderfully earth-friendly goods.

All in all, another fun and successful THREADshow. I found a few good bargains that not only keeps me stylish, but saves the planet and gives back to the community. Special thanks to Dara Bu from Elle Communications for the reminder email (I’ve signed up for the updates now!). Thanks also to Gayln Gorg of The G Collection, Kaye Bertheaud of liaMolly, and Leslie Tiano of Bottle Hood for taking the time to chat with me.

Spring Shoe Fling

One of my favorite pairs of shoes at the moment are the “Lita” platforms by Jeffrey Campbell.  After seeing a spring teaser email from Sole Struck (where I purchased my Litas), I decided to make my wish list of shoes that I would love to add to my wardrobe.  The one in the middle is a pair called “San Diego”, isn’t that great?

She’s Dressed in Black Again

Something about Depeche Mode just makes me want to wear everything black. In this case, it’s ok because the bright red “Violator” rose breaks up the black quite nicely. This is another item from Idle Vice’s Fashion Rocks line, and by far my favorite for all the reasons you may think: it’s my favorite all time group and it’s one of my favorite all time albums.

We found these murals outside a Mexican restaurant called El Camino, which is in Little Italy (Downtown San Diego). The sunlight was perfect and created such wonderful contrasting light because of the time of day we were there. With such a fantastic exterior, we will have to go inside to see if the food is just as good.
