Changing Up Snack Time with IFS Bulk

Toffee Cashews Peanuts CranberriesIt’s the beginning of a new year, and although I really do refrain from making resolutions because I tend to break them, I did actually resolve to improve the way I snack.  By coincidence, I was given the opportunity to review some fantastic snack foods that are on the healthier side, and are just as tasty as any donuts or cupcakes (although I may not give those up entirely).  I had friends and family sample these great items from International FoodSource, one of the largest suppliers of snack items in the Northeast of goodies such as nuts, dried fruit and snack mixes.

Immediately after opening the package, my mother stole the Toffee Cashews and kept them all to herself because they were so delicious.  Me, my husband and our friend Anthony tried the rest and although all of it was great, a crowd favorite was the Caramel Apple Crunch which satisfied my need for something sweet and salty.  If all of my future snack foods taste this great, I think I can finally keep one of my New Year’s resolutions!

Absolutely Fabulous: The 2014 San Diego County Fair

It’s that time of year again for The San Diego County Fair, and this year’s theme was called “The Fab Fair” featuring all things Beatles.  Of course that made me happy because it meant lots of British references, and I’m all about anything that brings me closer to the UK!  It took two days with my family and one day with a friend/co-worker to get through the San Diego Fair this year.  As it happens every year, we were able to partake in the sights, sounds, rides, games and of course the fab food.  Next year, I’m going to take my family on a Tuesday to take advantage of “Taste of the Fair”, where some food vendors offer a sample portion of one of their menu items for just $2, which is worth the price of admission itself!  I spent just $10 on food that day and was able to sample five different items.  I hope the pictures speak for themselves of what a great time we had at this year’s fair.  The San Diego County Fair is open until July 6th, 2014, which gives you just a few more days to enjoy one of San Diego’s finest traditions, including the 4th of July!

My first two dishes of the day: Deep Fried Cream Cheese with sweet chilli sauce and a Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese Melt.  The deep fried cream cheese was fantastic and everything I hoped it would be, but the pulled pork sandwich left much to be desired.  Oh how I wanted it to be good!

Next on the menu: Deep Fried Birthday Cake and the Spaghetti & Meatball Sandwich.  The spaghetti sandwich was quite good.  I think I was hoping the deep fried birthday cake was a cake pop dipped in batter and deep fried…hmmm, maybe a new recipe I should try out?

Food For “The Big Game” From Allrecipes.com

Map

If you’ve been following my blog, you know just how big of a football fan I am.  Although my San Diego Chargers didn’t make it all they way through the playoffs this year, I’ll still be watching the Superbowl because it’s the final football game until the new season in August.  My husband is big on preparing great food for any sporting event, so I’m glad to share with Any Second Now readers some awesome recipes for your Game Day get together through this fantastic graphic from Allrecipes.com, in partnership with Tabuleau Software.  After you click on the picture above, it will take you to the graphic where you can use the circular icons to filter recipes by type, which will update the map to show you the top recipes for that type by state.  If you would like to see all of the recipes available regardless of state, the list on the lower right hand side will also update by type as well.

I’m going to spend some time clicking through all of the great recipes in the graphic to help my hubby create our final menu to enjoy while we watch the Seattle Seahawks play the Denver Broncos.  Cheers and enjoy “The Big Game” on Sunday!

Allrecipes.com, the world’s largest digital food site with more than 1 billion visits each year, partnered with Tableau Software to share a state-by-state look at America’s Super Bowl game day favorites, including chili, dips, drinks, sandwiches, snacks and wings.  Using a massive amount of data from nearly 95 million visits, Tableau has created an interactive graphic that can be viewed here (or by clicking on the graphic above). Some interesting findings include:

– When it comes to snack recipes, we are a nation divided. Depending on where you are, Americans appear to have a strong preference for Little Smokies recipes, nachos or meatballs as their gameday snack of champions. Note that in both Washington and Colorado, the top snacks recipe is Mexican Potato Nachos. However, in New York/New Jersey, the top snacks recipes is The Best Meatballs.

– New York stands alone as the only state whose favorite chili recipe is turkey over beef.

– Two dip recipes stand out as head and shoulders above the rest – the recipe for Seven Layer Taco Dip dominates much of the Western part of the country (including California) and the Northeast and Southeastern states have a preference for Buffalo Chicken Dip.

– The one thing all Americans agree on is wings. The recipes for Baked Buffalo Wings is tops in all 50 states.

Honey, I Love This Toast!

IMG_0163 (2) (1280x1280)

I have a few food obsessions that I’ll be posting about in the next few weeks.  One of them is something I have been seeing everywhere, yet never had the pleasure of indulging in until very recently.  My husband and I had our first taste of honey toast at the Up 2 You Café in the Kearny Mesa area.  The picture above is what I ordered at the cafe, topped with custard, strawberries and vanilla ice cream.  The honey toast itself is such sweet, crunchy and buttery goodness, my hubby knew I was instantly hooked.  After we arrived home, I sat down at my computer and looked up several recipes on how to make this marvelous dessert, and found three that I liked from these tasty blogs and basically combined them:  A Taste of Koko, Notions and Notations of a Novice Cook, and Kirbie’s Cravings (from San Diego).  Below is a step by step pictorial of how I made my version of honey toast, and it’s so very easy to make.  I emulated what I had at Up 2 You Café, minus the custard (it would have taken a little too long).  The result is better than you could imagine.  Let me know if you’ve tried this tasty Asian delight, and if you’ve to make it yourself.  Enjoy!

DSC03168 (2) (1280x1280)

Originally, I wanted to use a thicker cut bread, but we couldn’t find any loaves in the grocery stores close by.  I know you can use basically any bread, but I thought a sweet bread would work best, like Hawaiian sweet bread.

DSC03169 (2) (1280x960)

I used three pieces of bread:  one was the base, and the other two were the “bowl”.  Take a sharp knife and cut the center out of two of the pieces of bread, then cut those pieces into cubes.

DSC03172 (1280x1280)

Melt two tablespoons of butter and brush the bottom slice, then set the other two pieces of toast on top and brush those as well (be sure to brush all sides).  Butter the cubes and toss them in a bowl, then sprinkle about two tablespoons of granulated sugar on the bread “bowl” and the bread cubes.  I placed them in our countertop oven and heated at 300 degrees for 10 minutes, or until golden brown (be sure to turn the cubes so that all of the sides are toasted).  Replace the cubes into the bowl, and drizzle generously with honey.  Very. Generously.

DSC03173 (2) (1280x1280)

This is the best part:  Whilst still warm, add your favorite toppings.  The result?  Honey toast heaven.

Vegas Vittles: Monta & English’s

DSC01795 (1280x959)

My last post about my recent Las Vegas trip will be about the two new places we ventured for noshing:  Monta Japanese Noodle House and English’s Gastro Pub.  Deon’s Uncle Junior has been talking about Monta Ramen for a while, and since every restaurant has air conditioning, having hot soup actually sounded appetizing, despite the heat.  The restaurant is pretty close to the strip but very small, which caused a line to build quickly after we were seated.  We started off fried rice and gyoza, our favorites.  Apparently the gyoza is placed in a press that fries it on each side.  It’s also made fresh to order, and I can definitely say it’s the best gyoza I’ve ever had.  Finally, we had the ramen, which was again, the best I’ve had.  If you’re willing to venture away from The Strip, this place is definitely worth it.

From the Monta Noodle House menu:  “Tonkotsu-Shoyu Ramen (pork bone and special shoyu base) has a cloudy white colored broth. The broth is like a mix of the Tokyo and Kyushu style blend. This style is the newer trend in Japan.  Basic toppings are green onions, two slices of chashu, bamboo shoots and kikurage.”

On the Saturday before we left Vegas, Deon’s mom suggested we try English’s Gastro Pub at the Town Square Mall, also off The Strip.  Being the Anglophile that I am, I jumped at the chance to bring a touch of England back into my life.  My mother-in-law actually suggested we do Afternoon Tea, but since all of us were eating there for an early dinner, we decided to have actual meals this time round.  My husband and father-in-law kept it simple with burgers and chips (my hubby added the house salad below).  Not pictured is the child’s version of the burger meal, which was with a slider and chips, and included a drink for only $5.  My mother-in-law had the cod and chips with crushed peas (aka mushy peas).  I decided to go all the way English and had the Toad in the Hole.  All of the food was good and fresh, and I loved the gravy of my Toad in the Hole.  The last time I had tea was in London last year at Harrods (post here), and I think I’m due for another go.  This visit to English’s just made me feel all nostalgic, and after seeing a few people who had the tea service, and I vowed that the next time we would be in town, my mother-in-law and I would venture on our own for Afternoon Tea.

Bonne Bouffe à Bo-Beau

DSC01200 (2) (1280x1280)

Merci again to Bing Translator for the translation of the title of my post (I used the same translator for my post about Paris last summer).  It should roughly translate to “Great Food at Bo-Beau”.  This is another catch-up restaurant post from a dinner out with Janice and Regi.  We’re always ready to try out new places, and Regi heard Bo-Beau in Ocean Beach was a great new French bistro.  We have had great luck with French cuisine, so Janice and I trusted Regi with her choice.  We had been to this location before when it was Thee Bungalow.  I remember that night well because it was when I announced to Regi for the first time I was pregnant (Janice had found out the week prior).  Now, here we are five years later at the same location, but different restaurant.

DSC01202 (2) (1280x1280)

DSC01204 (2) (1280x960)

Already I fell in love with the locks on the grid right outside of the entrance.  It reminded me of Pont de l’Archevêché (Archbishop’s Bridge) in Paris from my trip last summer with Janice.  We both said at Bo-Beau that we should have bought padlocks and placed them on the bridge out there. C’est la vie!  The interior reminded me of a little place my husband and I had dinner at, also in Paris.  It was a tiny bistro where we knew only locals frequented because it was quite tucked away and accessed by unpaved roads that were down the street from our hotel.  With this kind of atmosphere, I expected and anticipated only great things once we were ready to have dinner!

Janice arrived about 20 minutes after I did, so Regi and I started off with drinks and an appetizer.  Both drinks reminded me of creations at Callooh Callay in London and were très fantastique.  The Charcuterie Board appetizer was very simple, but quite filling and great for more than two people.  Once Janice arrived, we ordered our dinners.  As usual, we made sure to order different dishes for sampling purposes.  I’m glad we waited because Janice and I nearly ordered the same dish, which was the Mac n Cheese.  That allowed me to order the Burger Royale with Cheese, and I made sure to add the fried egg.  Regi ordered from the Moules & Frites menu (mussels and fries).  I thoroughly enjoyed my burger, which I can safely say was the best restaurant burger I have ever had.  I loved the pork belly patty with the fried pancetta, but loved it even more with the fried egg.  The fries were cooked with rosemary and the aioli sauce completely complimented them.

We ended our food love-fest with the Ménage à Trois for dessert, which prompted a flurry of funny posts on Facebook that I won’t share here.  My two favorite parts of the dessert involved chocolate, which is not normally the case.  I was pleasantly surprised that the peanut butter brittle was light, crisp and sweet and went wonderfully with the chocolate ganache, so it was like a really fancy Butterfinger.  Just the mention of “sea salt caramel house made marshmallow” made the Amaretto pot de crème already sound absolutely delicious and did not disappoint.  The cheesecake was more tart than I’m used to, but the fresh fruit atop took the edge off.

After telling my husband about Bo-Beau, he wants to head out there to enjoy the Burger Royale in person, while I try the Brown Butter Gnocchi.  Hopefully they will still have the Strawberry Shortcake on their dessert menu because I really was torn between that and the Ménage à Trois.  I guess Bo-Beau has secured a future visit, and I promise to wear better shoes than I did that night because parking is at a premium in that area.  Overall, delicious dining in a lovely French inspired atmosphere.  Bon Appétit!

Dinner at Bellefleur

DSC01096 (2) (1280x1280)

I’m playing catch-up with some posts about restaurants I have visited in the last month, and this will be a quick one.  When my mother-in-law came to visit at the beginning of May, we wanted to eat dinner close to where she was staying prior to the Carlsbad Village Faire.  I remembered there was a restaurant I had not eaten at yet at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets called the Bellefleur, and we agreed it would be a quick and easy way for a nice sit down dinner with the family.  Happily enough, we came at a great time because they had a 3 course chef special, celebrating their 15 years in Carlsbad.  The special was just $15, so we all chose to eat from their prix fixe menu.  My choices are all pictured below, and were all fantastic.  Because we arrived quite late for dinner, we saw the set up and asked our server about the brunch.  He described all of the wonderful food and we decided that when my mother-in-law returns to San Diego, we plan on going to their Sunday Champagne Brunch.

Weekend in Pictures: Record Store Day Food!

RSD 2013 Food Collage from Pink CandlesWho knew that our food adventures would be just as eventful as our fabulous finds during Record Store Day?  It’s not so hard to imagine when the adventures happen with a friend who is a food blogger!  As mentioned in last Monday’s post, here is part two of my Record Store Day adventure with CC of the blog Pink Candles at Ridgemont High (who provided photos for the mini-collage of moi above).  We started off the day very early by standing in line at Donut Bar in Downtown San Diego.  I can safely say that this is the first time that I have ever stood in line early just to get into a food establishment.  We left my house at 7:15 am and there were still people in front of us!  The picture below was taken after we had already been inside and then sat down across the street to enjoy one of our donuts (you can see a picture of our day in line on their Tumblr page here).

RSD 2013 Food Collage 1

RSD 2013 Food Collage 2I’m glad that the menu was posted because we got the chance to think about what we wanted prior to going in (they also post their menu daily on their official Facebook page).  Even then, walking past all of the donut goodness had me changing my mind several times before I made my final decision: German chocolate cake donuts for my husband and mum; a blood orange, a blueberry with meyer lemon glaze, a creme brulee and maple bacon bar all for myself.  CC selected the same ones, sans the maple bacon bar.  Needless to say, I ate the maple bacon bar straight away, but my runaway favorites were the blood orange and creme brulee.  The blood orange donut had a wonderful citrus glaze and the donut was so soft and fluffy.  The combination melted in my mouth.  The creme brulee one was a filled donut, and had the same crunchy candied sugar topping as a true creme brulee dessert, so it was like eating a handheld version.  Overall, quite a delicious start to our day!  We saved the rest of our donuts for later and at that point headed to the San Diego Record Show and then Groovy Records.  After our first two record stops, we headed to Pacific Beach (the M-Theory line was a bit too long).  I took the picture a row of bikes after we parked the car (below).  I just adore that mint and pink one.

RSD 2013 Food Collage 3

Before we ventured into Thrift Trader and Cow Records, we had lunch at Papa Luna’s Empanadas, an establishment specializing in empanadas.  Being Filipina, both CC and I are very familiar with empanadas, but I’ve never had them like this.  CC had two empanadas:  a shrimp filled one (I don’t think it was on the menu pictured above) and one filled with butternut squash.  I had the special of the month, the Moussaka (lamb, eggplant, garlic and parmesan).  CC explained that you can have them either baked or fried, and she suggested fried, and I couldn’t have imagined having them any other way.  Because I usually have ones filled with beef and potato, the empanadas at Papa Luna’s were so flavorful and unexpected.  I will have to go back and bring my family and try the dessert empanadas.  That dulce de leche and apple one has my name written all over it!

DSC01027 (2) (1280x896)

RSD 2013 Food Collage 4CC suggested that we have dessert at Sugar & Scribe, an Irish bakery next door to Cow Records, which was our last food stop of the day.  Everything that I had at Sugar & Scribe was fabulous and oh-so-delicious.  CC bought a few desserts to take home and also had a quiche in the store.  Here were my goodies: the orange creamsicle and Grandpa Soapy’s lemon curd mini-cupcakes, a spicy ginger chew, a couple of mini sugar cookies and a bag of shortbread cookies.  The mini-cupcakes were light and so very fresh.  I love desserts with citrus in them (such as the blood orange donut at Donut Bar), and both the orange creamsicle and lemon curd cupcakes satisfied that craving.  The mini sugar cookies were as pretty as they were yummy and the ginger chew reminded me of Christmas.  I’m savoring the shortbread cookies, and I still have two more to have with tea.  Not only did I love the baked goods, but I adored the quaint decor, personal pictures on the wall, the stories behind each recipe printed and displayed, and the lovely conversation we had with the owner and her family members.  I had such a great time on Record Store Day because it was an all around spectacular sensory experience for the mind, stomach, ears and soul.  I want to thank CC for a great outing, and here’s to more to come!

Pink Candles in My Burning Kitchen

DSC00642 (2) (1280x896)

Two weekends ago, I had the pleasure of meeting two local ladies who are food bloggers.  Darlene of My Burning Kitchen discovered my blog due to a link on M-Theory’s Facebook page to my post about Peter Hook.  She contacted me through Twitter and we started to chat.  Through Darlene, I met the lovely rocker girl of Pink Candles at Ridgemont High (I will respect her choice to remain annonymous, so I’ll just call her Pink Candles).  Both have posted very sweet comments on my blog, and through email exchanges, we discovered that we each have quite a few things in common, mainly to do with loving the 80’s.  Darlene shares my love of Duran Duran and groups like Depeche Mode and New Order.  Pink Candles is more a hard rocker, which actually equates to our mutual love of metallic spikes and edge in our style (she had killer boots on when we met up).  After a few Tweets and many emails later, we decided it would be fun to meet up.

Pink Candles arranged when and where, which I fully supported because I definitely would trust food bloggers to pick a more than suitable place to eat!  She choose the Eclipse Chocolat Bar & Bistro in eclectic South Park.  It was the perfect time of day to have their Sweet & Savory Bunch special, which is $16 for three plates.  After having a salted mocha with homemade marshmellows, I started brunch with the rosemary potato wedges in a burnt caramel hollandaise sauce.  Very savory indeed!  Sadly, I don’t recall what Darlene and Pink Candles each had for their starters.

DSC00632 (2) (1280x897)

DSC00635 (2) (1280x1280)

Next we had our main dishes, all pictured below.  Darlene had the grilled panini (left), I had the build-a-benedict topped with brown sugar-pulled pork with a chile burnt caramel hollandaise sauce (middle), and Pink Candles had the mushroom thyme quiche (right).  We all shared bits of our main dishes with each other and although my dish was very good, I liked Pink Candles choice of quiche.  That flaky pastry was quite heavenly.

DSC00633 (2) (1280x896)

DSC00628 (2) (1280x853)

We closed with the sweet portion of brunch.  I think it was an accident that both Darlene and Pink Candles ordered the same dessert, which was the burnt caramel apple cobbler.  Now, that was a very interesting and very savory dessert because it was spicy, sweet, creamy and rich.  The chile burnt caramel hollandaise sauce blended well with my build-a-benedict so the heat of the spice was more mild.  But the spice was very prominent when used over the cobbler.  I’m going to have to bring my girls Janice and Regi here, because I have found a new favorite dessert, which was the frozen peanut butter mousse.  All elements of this dessert worked so well together and I just couldn’t get enough, even though I was a bit full from my starter and main dish.  Next time, I will go there just for that dessert with a cup of coffee.  So. Good.

After brunch, we strolled around South Park for a little bit, taking in some shopping.  Pink Candles bought a few goodies and I vowed to go back there after Lent and explore more in depth the stores that we visited that day:  Bad Madge, The Make Good, Junc Life & Style and Graffiti Beach.

And finally, pictured below are the desserts that both Darlene and Pink Candles each made and brought to share (as the sole fashion blogger not knowing this food blogger ritual, I came empty handed).  Pink Candles made the yummy blueberry mochi cake and Darlene made the equally delicious yellow cake with sour cream chocolate frosting (the cake & frosting recipes are on her blog here).  Pink Candles even made beautiful earrings for each of us (I have wore my pair to the Alicia Keys concert).  I like this ritual, and I will definitely bring something the next time we all meet up!  I have found new friends in Darlene and Pink Candles, and you can be sure that this will not be the only time I go on an outting with these beautiful and fun food bloggers.
