FTC Disclosure: The Jamberry Nail Shields gift pack winner was chosen at random using Math Goodies.  As stated in the initial post, I received product and was asked to review the product in return.  Although I did receive product, the opinions in this post are strictly my own and that of the person I asked to review the product.

This is England!

Just a quick hello that this post is going up while Janice and I are in jolly old England.  Anything that I want to post in relation to our trip seems to be about The Clash, so I’ll just go with that theme and give into another of their songs as the title of this post.  Here’s where we have been so far:

Drinks & starters at Callooh Callay
Afternoon tea & shopping at Harrods
More shopping at Topshop, Cool Britannia & many various souvenir shops
Parliament Buildings
Westminster Abby
Tower Bridge
Tower of London
Buckingham Palace
Rewind Festival at Henley on Thames

As this posts today, we are in route to Paris for two short days, then it’s back to London, then back to San Diego. I’m having loads of fun, but I definitely miss my hubby and son. I know they miss me, too, but l bought them some trinkets that I hope will make up for my absence.

I won’t be able to post the rest of the week, but I’ll be back up and running next Monday. Please remember to enter the Jamberry Nail Shields contest that I posted about last Monday and I’ll see you all next week, cheers!

Anniversaries

Last week, I celebrated two anniversaries:  My 5th wedding anniversary and my 2nd blog anniversary!  To celebrate our wedding anniversary, Deon, Dominic and I went away this past weekend for fun in the sun (a hotel resort), shopping plus some amusement (The Lab & Boomers) and some golf (my husband was in a tournament).  I’m definitely someone who looks at life in timestamps, and it’s amazing how much has happened.

I think I’ve figured out what this blog is truly about: enjoying life and sharing it, especially through adventures in fashion, music and family.  Thank you all for your support regarding my blog, especially through its evolution, and I hope you continue to read along.  Cheers!

Weekend in Pictures: A Fond Farewell to the Fair

Dominic had his face painted during our third visit to the fair a couple of weekends ago.  He got Spiderman painted on his cheek and did so well and sat still like a very big boy.  He also did very well during his first big fireworks display last week.  Typically we set off for Las Vegas during the Fourth of July because we can set off our own fireworks in the cul-de-sac of my in-law’s house. But because the holiday fell in the middle of the week, we decided to celebrate the Fourth at the last day of the fair last week.  I know it’s technically not a weekend, but it certainly felt like one!  As my last hurrah to the San Diego County Fair, I had a chocolate dipped cheesecake slice.  It was better than I could ever describe here (and as my husband stated, I should have had them roll it in Oreo cookies).  Hope you had a great weekend!

Wil Wheaton is my Geek Crush

As noted in last week’s post about Fifty Shades of Grey (post here), I love to read.  There was a point in time where I was reading mostly magazines because I was trying to be creative with my wardrobe or home decor.  But I always dive right back into books, like when I read at least ten books while on maternity leave back in 2009.  Although I love holding a good book because I love the feel of turning pages and the look of books on shelves, I have accepted that I am also equally enamoured with the covenience of downloading books to an eReader.

(Note: New visitors directed here purely because Wil Wheaton was tagged, I’m sure once you saw the title of this post and read that opening sentence, you just rolled your eyes at me and cursed me under your breath.  I beg you to keep reading.)

From a Star Trek convention where we met Michael Dorn, possibly 2001

So it was purely coincidental during this recent electronic book downloading binge that one of my co-workers, and fellow Trekkie, Nick, recommended Just a Geek (Unflinchingly honest tales of the search for life, love and fulfillment beyond the Starship Enterprise) by Wil Wheaton (the link is to his virtual bookshelf on his blog).  You read that right: I’m a Next Generation Trekkie and a bit of a sci-fi geek, have I not mentioned that before?  It’s well documented here on this blog that I am a music geek, specifically my extreme fandom for Depeche Mode and the number of concerts I attend annually.  But I have only made a couple of references to my sci-fi geekdom on posts here and here, not yet fully divulging the extent.  I will confess that I have attended the Comic Con three times, which in itself does not attest to my geekiness.  But I think voluntarily attending two Star Trek conventions, dragging my husband to the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas and also going to another Star Trek Experience here in San Diego does qualify me for level one geek at the very least.   Also, I must note that I’ve seen every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG to us Trekkies) at least three times, if not more (my sister owns the DVDs and we had a marathon one weekend) and I have seen all of the TNG  movies in the theater.  In casual conversation, I am known to quote Star Trek, much to the chagrin of my husband.  I own a Borg teddy bear. Enough said.

My Borg bear from The Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas. I call him Loquacious (of course).

Now that I’ve made my confession, I can explain why I enjoyed Just A Geek (eight years after the fact, it was released in 2004).  I saw Stand By Me in the theaters when it first came out, and saw it several more times thereafter because I was a teenager infatuated with Ace (Kiefer Sutherland).  Ironically enough, my favorite parts of the movie did not involve Ace, but the relationship between the boys.  My favorite scenes are the ones where they are just talking in the round, especially Gordie Lechance’s pie eating story.  This was my first introduction to Wil Wheaton, and there began my sister’s crush.  Imagine her excitement when he was cast as Wesley Crusher on TNG .  Wil Wheaton in our living rooms, every week?  Rholnna was beyond excited.

Even after his five seasons on TNG, Rholnna continued to follow Wil Wheaton’s career.  She’s even met him twice: once at a Comic Con (where I met him, too, in the picture below) and then again at E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo).  It was about two years ago that I started to read Wil’s blog, In Exile, and began following him on Twitter (@wilw).  Still, that didn’t clue me into the struggles he had with an acting career that I had no idea had stalled after TNG

Just a Geek chronicles how Wil’s writing career began, interspersed with the beginnings of his blog.  It also explains why he left TNG and his struggle to separate himself from TNG in hopes of having a successful movie career.  Although he had some work after TNG, it was not nearly the kind of work he envisioned having after the critical acclaim of Stand by Me.  I expected Wil to be a bit snarky and witty because of his Tweets, so I definitely laughed out loud throughout most of the book.  I even geeked a little that he wrote about a memory that included Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode.

At Comic Con, possibly 2002

What I didn’t expect was how candid the book would be and the effect it had on me emotionally.  I actually cried reading this book.  I ached at the heartbreak Wil felt after failed auditions and the toll it took on him & his family financially.  I had no idea that he was originally in Star Trek: Nemesis (during Deanna Troi & William Riker’s wedding reception), and that much of his part ended up on the cutting room floor (apparently, he’s not even in the DVD extra footage).  After reading how much it meant to him returning as an adult and not The Kid to the Star Trek set, and how much fun he had with his former co-stars, it was gut wrenching to know that it felt all for naught, even though Wil was resilient.  I then cheered when he triumphantly was asked to join the 15th anniversary of TNG celebration through the campaigning of his fans, after he was initially told he wasn’t really a part of the Star Trek family.

I breathlessly read this book in about a day (technically two nights).  I’m one to hurry through because I’m an anxious reader, so I know I’ll be reading this again at a slower rate to ensure I catch everything.  Because of Just A Geek, I just downloaded another book of his called Dancing Barefoot and will read his other books as well.  Then I’m going to watch all of the episodes of his appearances on The Big Bang Theory (Evil Wil Wheaton anyone?). I’ve told my sister about the book and explained that if she is at all the fan of Wil Wheaton that she claims to be, that this is something she must read immediately (I think we may even attend w00tstock this year). Yessiree, Wil Wheaton is definitely my geek crush.

F#@! The Paperwork: Why I Loved The "Fifty Shades" Trilogy

Picture previously posted: My Acer Iconia with the third book of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy, Wendy Brandes swear rings & Dominatrix nail polish

I was home for the past two weeks, caring for my mom post-op (a simple gall bladder procedure).  In addition to doing all of the things I needed to for my mom like driving her to follow-up appointments, cooking and cleaning, taking my son out so my mom could get some sleep, I did quite a bit of reading.

I’m a fairly avid reader.  My books of choice lately are purely for escapism:  The Bridget Jones’ series by Helen Fielding; the “Shopaholic” series by Sophie Kinsella; the “Sookie Stackhouse” series by Charlaine Harris and Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell (sometimes I get in the occasional biography).  I know they are not Pulitzer Prize winners, but they provide me with great sources of enjoyment.  These books are meant to be fun and one would have to just dive into each of the fictitious worlds and allow the waves of your imagination take you where you want it to go under the guidance of the author’s words.

I apply this same thought process to the uber-popular “Fifty Shades” trilogy by EL James.  I nearly passed up reading Fifty Shades of Grey, the first book of the series, because I had read that the author originally wrote it as fan fiction based on the “Twilight” books, which I cannot bring myself to read, although I watched the first movie twice because I needed to give it a chance (I just can’t get past the shimmering vampires who are saccharine versions of the day-walkers from “Blade”).   What piqued my curiosity of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy is that it is a love story laced with BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism, masochism).  Called “Mommy Porn”, the trilogy has been dismissed as poorly written & repetitive, and more importantly, unbelievable.   Some libraries have banned it due to the erotic nature of the books.

If you haven’t started reading the books yet, they center around the love affair between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.  Anastasia is a painfully innocent & beautiful 22 year-old recent college graduate (and virgin), who “accidentally” falls into the charms of 27 year-old Mr. Grey, a stunningly handsome yet psychologically damaged self-made billionaire.  I’m no book critic, so I’m not sure what I can offer in terms of style, dialogue, or literary reference, but I can say that these books kept me wanting more.  It appeals to everything that I love in any kind of romantic book: a woman who is determined to stay true to herself and is loved and cherished for all that she is by a man who would move heaven and earth to prove it to her.  I also feel a kinship with Anastasia, who, like me, loves Twinings English Breakfast Tea and who’s favorite city is London.

As expected from the reviews I’ve read, there are some very descriptive sexual situations all throughout the books, chronicling Anastasia’s sexual discovery through the guidance of Christian, but the BDSM scenes are far from graphic, and I’m sure most would say they are tame.  Many phrases used to describe certain sexual acts tend to be a bit repetitive, but the romantic tensions that lead up to them are sweet and funny (“Oh, f@#! the paperwork…” is one that comes to mind and you have to read the first book to get the reference).  There are some action scenes that had me anxiously turning the pages, eager to find out what happens next to this alluring couple, and the first two books have cliff hangers that cause you to hold your breath.  In the words of Christian Grey “don’t overthink” and just suspend your belief for a few moments to live in this crazy-sexy world.  Laters, baby!

(Note:  I’m re-reading the books because I’ve heard that Alexander Skarsgard is interested in the part of Christian Grey.  Oh would that it were true!)

Across the Pond: Our London Trip is Confirmed!

Picadilly Circus, London, 2008 – Photo by Cyrillynn

I know I have been talking about this for sometime, but everything is confirmed and set for our trip to London!  As mentioned, I’m going to travel across the pond with my best friend, Janice on August 15th of this year.  Because of wonderful service we received and the fantastic price, we’ll be staying at the same Premier Inn that my husband and I stayed at the last two trips to England, which is literally five minutes from Wembley Stadium.  Also, we are flying British Airways because they now fly directly out of San Diego.  Since Janice has never been to Europe before, in addition to hitting all of the London tourist spots, we are also planning to take a little side trip to Paris (*fingers crossed*).  Janice has been sending me texts with a countdown, which prompted me to add a cute little countdown to this post and to my sidebar.

Daisypath Vacation tickers

Keeping true to my fashionista inner goddess, I’ve also started thinking about what I’m going to wear, because I know we’ll be doing quite a bit of walking.  I’ve mostly got flats slated for our trip, but I’ve got a pair of low-heeled ankle boots and a pair of flatforms that I’m going to be sporting as well.  I definitely plan on shopping, posting outfits and documenting everything right here on the blog!

I just checked the Rewind Festival site for updates and I am beyond excited because they made an addition that I was not expecting to the show we’re attending on August 19th.  Here is the line up to date:

  • OMD (see my posts here and here for previously attended shows)
  • Lightening Seeds (“Pure” was one of their more popular songs)
  • Adam Ant and The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse
  • Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals)
  • Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet, newly added!)
  • The Straits (Formerly Dire Straits)
  • Wang Chung
  • Marc Almond (Soft Cell)
  • John Parr (of “St. Elmo’s Fire” fame)
  • Midge Ure (Ultravox)
  • The Christians (Not too familiar with their music, although I have heard of them)
  • T’Pau (“Heart & Soul”)

My only nervous moments are thinking about being away from Dominic so long while he’s in his toddler phase, because he’s so attached to me right now (I think my husband will be fine).  I know Deon will plan lots of outings with Dominic (most likely golf related), so I’m hoping that will keep him occupied.  Despite that little bit of anxiety, the excitement just keeps building and building!  Look out for more updates as the date gets closer.  Cheers!

May The 4th Be With You

Before the day ends, I thought I would dedicate a quick post to all of my geek friends.

Happy Star Wars Day!

Happy Birthday to Me: The Acer Iconia Tablet

Next week is my 42nd birthday (yikes).  When my hubby asked what I wanted for said event (which always coincides with Mother’s Day), visions of shopping, spas and manicures danced through my head.  Since I just recently redeemed a spa day that he had given me previously, I ditched the day of relaxation for a bit of technology: I wanted a tablet.

Now, I already have a Nokia Booklet that he bought me when the netbook was the item of choice.  I’m not ready to move on from my cute little computer, so I had to think hard if I truly needed a tablet.  Although I would love to have an iPad, I just felt that it was too much technology and physically a bit large for my current needs.  My iPhone is great for quick access, but I find it difficult to post to my blog.  I decided to seek out some advice from The Geek Squad at Best Buy.

I explained that I really wanted something that I could “grab and go”.  Although my Booklet is small and can fit in a good-sized purse, it’s a laptop and needs to be opened and set up to be used, so it’s still a bit cumbersome.  I want the ability to put up quick blog posts, so I really only need a camera and access to my favorite apps (and games for my son).  I don’t own an eReader, but would like to start using one.  I want WiFi for those times when I’m sitting in a coffee shop or at a hotspot, and I would like Bluetooth capability.  After giving my friendly neighborhood Geek Squad agent all of my specs, he thought that I should really get something that was a “bridge” between my Booklet and my iPhone, and maybe the iPad wasn’t what I needed.  After his advice and after reading the near stellar reviews on Best Buy (an average rating of 4.2 stars out of 5), I am now  the proud owner of the Iconia TAB A100 by Acer, which is the smallest tablet in this series.

The Iconia TAB A100 has a 7″ HD multi-touch display (1024 x 600) and is 0.5 ” thin, which fits in my Rebecca Minkoff MAC (or my RM Schoolboy, pictured above).  This also makes it easier to handle, and typing up blog posts is much easier than using my iPhone for quick write-ups (additionally, I have the option of adding a full keyboard later if I find that I’m using it more than my laptop).  It has a Built-in 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN for my WiFi needs and Bluetooth 2.1.  I don’t need much to save on it, but it does have 8GB on-board memory and supports microSD and microSDHC formats for storing or transferring media (just in case).  I love the built-in front and rear webcams for when my son wants to Skype with Grandma in Las Vegas.  It has decent battery life (up to 4 hours and 30 minutes) and it comes in a pretty steel blue color.

Thank you honey for my lovely birthday gift!  This little gem fits all of my needs, and will be my technology travel companion for my London trip in August.

Fifty-Five

“He played the game the way it was meant to be played.” – John Elway via Twitter

I would be remiss as a native San Diegan, football enthusiast and long time San Diego Chargers fan if I didn’t mention the tragic loss yesterday of one of our local icons: Junior Seau.  That’s my jersey pictured above, and it was the first football jersey I ever purchased.  I’ve watched him play live and I’ve even had the pleasure of meeting him at his restaurant here called Seau’s.  He was as vibrant in person as he was on the football field.  I personally think that Junior and the defense he led back in 1994 was what carried that Chargers team to the Super Bowl that year.  He did as much for our community as he did for football and it is sad and devastating the way his life ended.  My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the Seau family.  Rest in peace #55.

(Edited to add- Of all the articles I’ve read, this is the best by far.  If you want to get to know who he was and how he affected everyone around him, this is the article to read: Junior Seau was gregarious, ebullient, hilarious and immensely popular by Michael Silver.)
