Stars & Stripes

I am trying very hard to embrace mixology through pattern mixing.  Sometimes I succeed, sometimes it’s a bit of a mess.  But after a couple of nice pointers from Kimi’s awesome post on her blog All The Fuss called “Power Clashing: I Do it Because I Can“, I thought I would try again.  I kept my patterns simple and in the same color family, as well as the accessories.

Below is my newest eBay acquisition.  I have been looking for my size in these very cute Poetic License shoe boots for a long time, and finally found them on eBay.  Although they are all black, there is subtle scallop detailing that make them beyond adorable.  The material is stretchy which makes them incredibly comfy for the height.  Most of all, they’re just so pretty!

Red Zone

As I type this post, owners and players of the National Football League have decided to have a season after all!  In honor of the fun and folly of American football, I am wearing red.  For those who are not familiar with the game, the “Red Zone” is the area close to the end zone where a score can be made within 20 yards.  The score can be either by touchdown (6 points) with a “PAT” (1 point after touchdown), or it can be a field goal (3 points).

Here’s to hoping my San Diego Chargers will make it into the Red Zone as often as possible.  Their first pre-season game is against the Seattle Seahawks on August 11.  Cheers to the upcoming 2011 NFL season!

City Boho

I think this is as Bohemian as I get.  I bought this dress in the early stages of my pregnancy nearly three years ago.  I liked that it has an empire waist that has a bit of give.  When I was pregnant, I tried as much as possible to buy things that were not maternity clothes, so that I could wear them again.  The satchel purse and hat make me feel like I’m traveling somewhere.  But the shoes, I think they speak for themselves.

Outfit – Cute Options dress; Old Navy cardigan; Vintage brooch/pendant; Unknown brand hat; Michael Kors purse & watch; Juicy Couture ring & sunnies; Rocket Dog shoes (“Dappled in Glam” from ModCloth)

(With all that has happened in the world, I decided to take it easy with posts this week.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all who have lost.  Remember, no loss is any greater or less important than another.)

Off-White Wedding Wear

I posted yesterday about the wedding we attended last week and how much I loved the vintage/retro feel of it all (see the post here).  I instinctively knew that I needed to also dress the part myself, and found this beautiful floral dress in vibrant colors.  I have three vintage Judith Leiber purses, but this one is my favorite.  I thought I’d also do up my son in a cute little get-up, since he’s always sneaking into my outfit pictures!

Boys & Girls

We had a business casual day in the middle of the week, so I donned a menswear look in honor of a post from Ambu’s blog called “Non-Conforming Androgyny“.  In it, she wore a very sharp fitted suit and tie.  The post is a wonderful piece on her interpretation of non-conformity through androgyny, and how it forges individuality and forces people to think outside of the box.

As an 80’s enthusiast, Annie Lennox, Boy George, David Bowie, Grace Jones and The Human League all immediately come to mind when I think of androgyny.  From women in power suits to men in make-up, I was incredibly influenced by the androgynous look and loved to mix up menswear in my everyday look as evidenced by the picture below (circa 1989).

(That’s me, at the tender age of 19. Have I changed much?)

Wherever I Lay My Hat…

Ever since John Taylor of Duran Duran sported one, I have always wanted to wear a fedora.  I have tried and tried to find one that fit.  No matter what size, shape, color or fabric, nothing looked good.  When we went to the San Diego County Fair last week, we sumbled upon a hat “booth”.  I tried on about 10 hats when I finally found the one I wanted.  I think it just may be a summer wardrobe staple!

Outfit – Forever 21 jacket, shirt & tank; Old Navy jeans; Aldo shoes; Vintage purse (reworked by De La Luna Designs, originally seen here); Hat from unknown vendor at the San Diego County fair; Juicy Couture ring & sunnies; Wendy Brandes ring; Michael Kors watch; Vintage cameo brooch

Sheer & Shorts

It’s unmistakably summer here in San Diego. I wore this running around with my son, going first to the mall then to a birthday party at the park.  It was perfect because it was light, cool and I didn’t have to fuss with it at all.  Dominic and I also jumped around in one of those “bounce houses”.  The elastic at the bottom of the shirt definitely kept my shirt from going places it shouldn’t!

Wide Angle

There are a couple of wide elements to this outfit.  The sweater is quite boxy and is shorter in the front and longer in the back, which is very forgiving (it’s also the sweater I wore when I met Alan Wilder).  The pants are an extreme palazzo style that I picked up at Miss Selfridge in London a few years ago.  I always have to wear them with flats because they just barely touch the ground when I’m not wearing any shoes.  It’s a completely easy outfit with a lot of flow to it, although not too much color.  Blacks, greys and silvers are my staples, as is my new asterisk ring.

Blues Clues*

*And a very cool ring!

It’s always hard to make slouchy look chic, but I think the way to do it is to pair it with something sleek & simple.  I think skinny jeans and strappy heels offset the oversized shirt and slouchy purse, which keeps it from looking sloppy.  I also kept the colors in the same family of blue, making the outfit look cohesive.

My favorite parts of this casual outfit are the little details, like the hearts on my shoes or the fantastic ring that I bought recently from Wendy Brandes Jewelry (you can purchase it by clicking here).  It’s simple, but really unusual because it’s an unexpected shape.  The bonus picture below is of Dominic getting into my TwitPic that I sent to Wendy to show her how the ring looked on me.  I think he’s due for more outfit pictures since he keeps wandering into mine!

Outfit – Naked Zebra shirt by ModCloth (here’s another shirt I like that’s similar); H&M jeans; Alexander McQueen shoes; Foley + Corinna Moto Hobo bag; Wendy Brandes Asterisk ring

Spotted at the Office

I wear so many different things to work because I like to keep things fresh and fun for myself and I’m really loving this kind of full skirt more and more.  I saw this on the Bloomingdale’s website and I had to pick it up because of the leopard spot print, and discovered how wonderfully lightweight it is.  For the summer, I think I will buy a few more of these types of skirts because I think they will transition nicely into the fall by adding tights with ankle or tall boots.
