Honey, I Love This Toast!

IMG_0163 (2) (1280x1280)

I have a few food obsessions that I’ll be posting about in the next few weeks.  One of them is something I have been seeing everywhere, yet never had the pleasure of indulging in until very recently.  My husband and I had our first taste of honey toast at the Up 2 You Café in the Kearny Mesa area.  The picture above is what I ordered at the cafe, topped with custard, strawberries and vanilla ice cream.  The honey toast itself is such sweet, crunchy and buttery goodness, my hubby knew I was instantly hooked.  After we arrived home, I sat down at my computer and looked up several recipes on how to make this marvelous dessert, and found three that I liked from these tasty blogs and basically combined them:  A Taste of Koko, Notions and Notations of a Novice Cook, and Kirbie’s Cravings (from San Diego).  Below is a step by step pictorial of how I made my version of honey toast, and it’s so very easy to make.  I emulated what I had at Up 2 You Café, minus the custard (it would have taken a little too long).  The result is better than you could imagine.  Let me know if you’ve tried this tasty Asian delight, and if you’ve to make it yourself.  Enjoy!

Originally, I wanted to use a thicker cut bread, but we couldn’t find any loaves in the grocery stores close by.  I know you can use basically any bread, but I thought a sweet bread would work best, like Hawaiian sweet bread.

DSC03169 (2) (1280x960)

I used three pieces of bread:  one was the base, and the other two were the “bowl”.  Take a sharp knife and cut the center out of two of the pieces of bread, then cut those pieces into cubes.

DSC03172 (1280x1280)

Melt two tablespoons of butter and brush the bottom slice, then set the other two pieces of toast on top and brush those as well (be sure to brush all sides).  Butter the cubes and toss them in a bowl, then sprinkle about two tablespoons of granulated sugar on the bread “bowl” and the bread cubes.  I placed them in our countertop oven and heated at 300 degrees for 10 minutes, or until golden brown (be sure to turn the cubes so that all of the sides are toasted).  Replace the cubes into the bowl, and drizzle generously with honey.  Very. Generously.

This is the best part:  Whilst still warm, add your favorite toppings.  The result?  Honey toast heaven.

Just Take Good Care of The World: Donations to Help The Philippines

PHILIPPINES_TYPHOON_Washington_Post

The devastation of typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Philippines has hit close to home because it touched down close to my mother’s hometown on the Visayan Islands.  My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone feeling the effects of the typhoon. I’ve been looking for places to donate, and I will most likely go through Shelter Box again, as I did to help with Japan back in 2011 (original post here).

To assist through Shelter Box, click this link and fill out the form to donate.  The links below also have other ways you can help.

Let’s help take good care of the world.

Santa’s hours and break times are subject to change, though Santa breaks from 1-1:45pm and 4-4:45pm daily.

Cover Up: My Perfect iPhone Cases

DSC03165 (2) (1280x1280)

I finally upgraded to an iPhone 4GS recently because I was waiting until my contract was up on my old iPhone.  In my quest to treat my new phone better than my old 3GS, I searched for protective, yet stylish covers.  Coincidentally as I was looking for one on eBay, I ended up with two.  Soon after, I was given one by the wonderful folks at Iconemesis.  Each of my new covers are prefect for who I am, and my needs.

I wanted the rubber audio cassette tape cover because we all know I’m an 80’s gal, and it matches my wallet (seen here).  I bought the wallet case at the same time I bought the cassette tape cover on eBay.   I really like the wallet case because it’s perfect for putting in a couple of business cards, an ID, a debit card and some money for a quick grab and go.  Oh yeah, it has a Union Jack on it as well.  When I was asked by Iconemesis to take a look at their phone covers, who knew I would find one that spoke to me and my Anglophile heart.  It’s called “London Village” by Sophie Henson, an illustrator and designer living in London.  Each time I look at the illustration, it reminds me the sights, sounds, and even the tastes of one of my favorite cities.

Check out other great phone cases by fantastic independent artists on the Iconemesis official site, and stay connected with them through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Electric Hit Music – The Pet Shop Boys In Concert

Back in the beginning of October, I saw the Pet Shop Boys at Copley Symphony Hall, with my husband, my sister and best friend Janice.  Later, we met up with my friend Merrick and his friend Alan.  After checking out Facebook that night, I saw that 80’s DJ extraordinaire, Richard Blade was also in attendance!  I finally have a chance to share some pictures and a video of the fantastic night of hit music by this iconic band.  When I think of “Godfathers of EDM”, I think of Depeche Mode, New Order and certainly Pet Shop Boys.  They have been successfully marrying thoughtful lyrics with perfect dance music for decades, and this concert was a culmination of everything they were and still are.  The audience sang many of the lyrics word for word, and you can tell so many of us have waited for this night for a long time.  Yet another band to cross off from my “bucket list” and they did not disappoint.  I heard everything I wanted to hear, with the exception of “Love Comes Quickly”, but that’s ok because hearing “Rent” more than made up for it (the line “I love you/you pay my rent” is one of my all time favorite lyrics).  We were most impressed with the lighting, which truly was a show in itself.  In addition to the pictures, I’ve included the set list from SetList.fm, and a video I recorded of “Suburbia”.  Enjoy!

With Rholnna and Janice after the concert.  I opted to buy just one item at the concert.  I was SO glad I bought the program, because it is not available online (the tour shirt is currently available on their online shop here).

Happy Halloween 2013!

IMG_0114 (2)

Just a quick little post to wish everyone a Happy Halloween.  This year, my son decided he wanted to be Iron Man, so included is a picture of Dominic and my niece Mei-Lin as Wonder Woman, right before they attended a birthday party last weekend.  My sister took the picture and I love how the flash reflected off of Dominic’s chest, giving the effect of the Arc Reactor lighting up!  The second picture is a throwback picture of me in the very early 90’s at the tender age of 21 or 22, when I was Left Eye of TLC.  Have a wonderful and safe night!

Topshop x Nordstrom Launches at Fashion Valley

Topshop X Nordies Collage 5

Last Saturday, I attended the launch of Topshop x Nordstrom at the Fashion Valley Mall.  As you can imagine, I was beyond excited when I learned that this fantastic collaboration would be right in my hometown because I have been a longtime fan of Topshop.   I’ve been to two locations in London, the one in New York and the one in Las Vegas, and I plan to go to the Los Angeles location on my next trip there.  The event was hosted by the uber-stylish Jennifer Grace of the blog, The Native FoxSan Diego Style Bloggers were also in attendance:  Eva of It’s A Fashion Fairy Tale, designer Lucia Mouet of Around Lucia, and stylist Maria of Savvynista.  I snapped quite a few pictures, and I even bought a new skirt…to start!  My best friend Janice couldn’t attend the event with me, but we vowed to shop there together to relive our days in London.  If you can’t make it out to one of the larger stores, make sure you head out to Topshop x Nordstrom at Fashion Valley.  Cheers!

TOPSHOP Loves San Diego!

DSC03133 (1280x960)

A few months ago, I posted that Topshop will be setting up pop-up shops in Nordstroms all over the country (original post here).  Well, one popped up right here in San Diego!  To help celebrate their arrival, Topshop will be holding a launch party at the Fashion Valley Nordstrom tomorrow (October 26) from 1pm to 4pm.  This celebration will be hosted by fashion blogger Jennifer Grace of The Native Fox, and will include a photographer, DJ, and swag bags to the first 100 attendees.  Jennifer will style her favorite Topshop looks of the season.  Of course I’ll be there to help welcome Topshop to my hometown, so come on by to this very fab and very British export on Saturday.  Cheers!
