European Vacation Day 1: O Frabjous Day at Callooh Callay!

Our fabulous European vacation began on August 15th, 2012, but really started on August 16th when we landed in London.  We lost a day travelling and I felt that I actually lost a little more with the lack of sleep and sadly due to a cold that I caught while on the plane.  Despite my slightly weakened system and need of sleep, I made sure that I was there and present for Janice’s first official day in Europe.

After checking into our hotel, the Premier Inn at their London-Wembley location (where I have stayed all three times I’ve been to London), we looked around locally for a place to eat lunch.  I like the Wembley Park location because it is literally a 10 minute walk to Wembley Stadium, and it’s just a quick hop on the Metropolitan or Jubilee Line into the city.  After a swift walk around, we settled on a pub called The Crock of Gold.  Janice was determined to experience fish and chips while officially in London, so we each had that with a couple of pints of beer.  Although our lunch was quite delicious and the beers were refreshing, we were still lacking sleep so we headed back to our hotel to take a quick nap.

After our nap, we got ready because we needed to head over to an establishment called Callooh Callay in the Shoreditch area of London’s East End.  I found out about it from the Travel Channel on a show called London Revealed.  Intrigued by the exclusivity of the Jubjub Members Bar, I made a reservation in hopes of trying to get a key (as the website states, they only give this special privilege to “discerning drinkers only”).  We relied heavily on my sense of direction because I was the more experienced London traveller.  But because I am unfamiliar with East London, we arrived famously late for our reservations.  Despite our late arrival, we were eagerly and pleasantly greeted because I had mentioned when previously making our reservations that we were travelling all the way from San Diego.

Callooh Callay is a gem of a place, hidden in the streets of Shoreditch on Rivington.  From the responsiveness of the reservations team to the awesome bartender, everything was fun, casual, cool and exclusive feeling.  First , we were led through the front called The Bar, which was a very laid back space. I loved the use of cassette tapes for part of the decor and drink menu. With all of the whimsy of Through The Looking Glass, we were then brought to a mirrored door that resembled a wardrobe.  Behind the door was The Lounge, and then passed some velvet curtains was the stairs leading to The Jubjub Bar where the elusive key would be used if we were members.

The Jubjub Bar is a fantastic little cocktail lounge with stuffed flamingos popping out of picture frames, animal pattered walls, fluffy pillows and chairs in various sizes.  I felt it was very comfy, like a dimly lit boudoir.  Janice immediately noticed the handsome gentleman behind the bar, and it was only later that we realized he was the creator of their August drink menu.  The bar itself was chock full of libations, interesting bottles and fresh herbs, which made me feel like we were peaking into an antique apothecary cabinet.

The drink menu was just as eclectic as the bar itself with names like The Westerners Erofeitch and the Paracelsus’ American Laudanum (both pictured above).  The Westerners was very refreshing because of its citrus base (fresh lemon juice, lemongrass and vodka), which was Janice’s first drink.  When I ordered the Paracelsus’ as my first drink, our waitress asked, “Are you sure?  It’s quite strong…”  That only piqued my curiosity, and she was quite right.  Even though I could probably have drank it quite quickly because it was so good, I nursed that drink the entire night with a glass of water because I could tell it was very strong.  Since I’ve become a mum, I’m no longer used to nights out drinking, and I think it was the bourbon and vermouth combination that did me in.  We dined on mini hot dogs and mini burgers, all of which were tasty.

The most unconventional moment of the night was when Janice decided to try The Hyper-Ventilator.  Our lovely waitress said that she loved this drink because it felt like you were doing something a bit naughty (I think it’s all the sniffing).  Elliot Davies, the esteemed bartender of the month of August, came over and explained the secrets behind this cocktail experience.  He said that he was at a herbalist and the person in the store was purposely wafting licorice dust at him and he really enjoyed the feeling it gave in the back of his throat, so he wanted to try out different drinks after inhaling the licorice dust.  Eventually, he came up with The Hyper-Ventilator, which is a bitter cocktail that is offset by inhaling the licorice dust.  Janice said that the bitterness softened more and more as she inhaled more licorice dust.

That was probably one of the most unusual and unique drink experiences I have ever had, and both Janice and I had an amazing time at Callooh Callay.  We had such a good time that we made reservations again for our last night in London because Elliot said that he would make us drinks that were “off the menu”.  I thought about including that night here in this post, but I think that night deserves its own post because each of our drinks were distinct and delicious, with a great story behind each one.  My next vacation post will be about our first experience at afternoon tea.  Cheers!

This is England!

Just a quick hello that this post is going up while Janice and I are in jolly old England.  Anything that I want to post in relation to our trip seems to be about The Clash, so I’ll just go with that theme and give into another of their songs as the title of this post.  Here’s where we have been so far:

Drinks & starters at Callooh Callay
Afternoon tea & shopping at Harrods
More shopping at Topshop, Cool Britannia & many various souvenir shops
Parliament Buildings
Westminster Abby
Tower Bridge
Tower of London
Buckingham Palace
Rewind Festival at Henley on Thames

As this posts today, we are in route to Paris for two short days, then it’s back to London, then back to San Diego. I’m having loads of fun, but I definitely miss my hubby and son. I know they miss me, too, but l bought them some trinkets that I hope will make up for my absence.

I won’t be able to post the rest of the week, but I’ll be back up and running next Monday. Please remember to enter the Jamberry Nail Shields contest that I posted about last Monday and I’ll see you all next week, cheers!

Vacation Ready!

As this posts, Janice and I will be on our way to London and Paris for the next week.  As a send off, I’m posting an outfit that I consider very resort and vacation ready.  This sheer shirt and flowy palazzo pants make me feel like traveling.  I’m still deciding whether or not to bring these pants as they require that I wear heels, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to pull off heels with all of the walking I know we’ll be doing.  I’ll put up posts about our trip when I return, but I will still schedule posts while I’m away.  In the meantime, you can follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to see my most current adventures while abroad (I think my husband and son can also keep tabs on me that way, too).  Cheers and see you when I get back!

Outfit –  ECI pants; Cotton On shirt; American Apparel clutch; Matiko “Paris” wedges; Ring from The Shangri-La; Michael Kors watch; Tiffany & Co necklace; Coach sunnies; Beaded bracelets were gifts from friends

Pump up the Jamberry: Nail Shields Review & Giveaway!

I have been playing dress up with my nails everyday since Mother’s Day, so I was very excited when I was approached to review a nail product called Jamberry Nail Shields.   They are similar to the Sally Hansen Nail Polish Strips that I have been using since last year (original post here).  What I found special about these nail shields in particular when I was introduced to them, was the fact that they last up to two weeks on your finger nails and up to six to eight weeks on your toe nails.  They are salon-quality and come in over 250 different designs, with different designs added monthly.

When I received these uber-cute nail shields, my nails were in no condition to apply any kind of polish.  So I recruited my best friend and travel buddy, Janice to take them for a spin.  Here is her testimony a picture of the finished product:

I love the design!  Regular nail salons would charge extra for designs like these.  Once I got the first two nails on, the rest were easy and quick to apply.  Definitely a quick way to have stylish nails without the salon cost!

As a thank you for trying out these beautiful nail shields, Livvy Cunningham, a Jamberry Nail Shield consultant, has given me an extra gift package to give away to a lucky Any Second Now reader (the cute little package is pictured below)!  Just post a comment to enter the contest, and a winner will be chosen at random when I return from London (at the end of this month).  Thank you Livvy for providing the gift package, cheers and good luck to those who enter!

Show Me Your Luscious Apparatus: My Recoil Contest Entry

Last week on Facebook, the Shunt staff of Alan Wilder’s group Recoil announced a contest called “Show Me Yours” (I added Luscious Apparatus, which is a Recoil song), to celebrate the arrival of the DVD “A Strange Hour in Budapest” (abbreviated as ASH here).  Fans were encouraged to show off their DVDs and any other products they bought having to do with ASH (post here).  I created two entries:  the first entry was a collage that I submitted through Instagram (the second picture seen above).  I then submitted another entry, which actually turned into an outfit post, featuring my rock t-shirt of the week.

The shirt peaking out from underneath the jacket is my Recoil shirt from the concert where I met Alan Wilder (post here).  That shirt will always remind me of what a wonderful experience it was to meet Alan and see his live show presentation with Paul Kendall.  I also played with the photo editing capabilities of my Acer Iconia tablet, which rendered some cool effects.  By the way, there will be five winners, and each will receive a photo from the concert, signed by Alan.  I have many items signed by him, but knowing that Alan Wilder himself will be picking the winner was the driving decision behind entering the conest.  I’ll be sure to post if I win!

Outfit – Forever 21 faux leather studded biker jacket; Recoil t-shirt; H&M skirt; Sam Edelman “Lorissa” pumps; Wendy Brandes rings; Coach sunnies

Baggage Claim

As I’m writing this, the Olympics are in full swing, making me even more anxious for my London trip with Janice.  With my trip only one week away, I’ve been mentally packing for about a month.  Because I’m still mulling over what outfits I’m going to wear, I just thought I’d share what I’ll be packing them all in. I have two pieces from the Mariella collection by Diane Von Furstenberg that I found in two different Marshalls over a year ago (most of the full set is pictured above).  I own the largest piece, which is the 28″ expandable suitcase, and also the 20′ wheeled carry on duffle (my actual case is pictured below and shows the studs in better detail).  I found the duffle first at a location closest to me, and the larger piece I found at a different location while waiting for my husband (there is a Marshalls next door to where he usually gets a haircut).

The studs were definitely in line with my current obsession and yet another a nod to my gothic tendencies.  In fact, in looking for a picture of the full set, I stumbled upon a wonderful blog called Vampire Gothic Rose, “the aging goth”.  I love her thoughts and tales on being an elder goth and I look forward to reading more (I’ve added her to my “Daily Reads” section).

Note:  I’ve created a new travel category called “World in my Eyes” in honor of my London/Paris trip.

Weekend in Pictures: Spectacle Soiree with BonLook

As you know from reading my blog, I wear glasses and I have recently discovered the joy of being able to change my glasses to match my outfits since I was introduced to purchasing affordable glasses online.  I recently purchased a pair of glasses from BonLook after seeing this post by Keiko Lynn.  I loved the Honeybadger frames on Keiko Lynn, but I had to get on the waitlist to get a pair in chocolate tortoise.  When they became available, I received an email notification along with a $10 discount!  After ordering them and receiving them, I was so excited that I Tweeted about my purchase.  I was contacted back by BonLook and discovered that they have a representative here in San Diego, so we scheduled a “Spectacle Soiree” at my house with some of my friends to check out their styles in person.

With Erika from BonLook (I’m wearing Cavalier in Burgundy and she is wearing Drink the Koolaid, but gold is no longer available)

Erika Kirkland, a San Diego BonLook representative, helped me host this awesome little event .  Knowing it would be a beautiful afternoon, I set up “shop” under a canopy in our front yard, so that my friends could enjoy the sunny weather and refreshments while shopping for prescription eyewear and sunglasses.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it really was a lot of fun because it was very low pressure, but interactive.  The comments I heard from my friends was that it was great to try on what was seen online  because they were unsure how they would look in person after only seeing a picture (even with the virtual try-on).  I thought the pair that I ended up getting for myself (Cavalier in burgundy, pictured above with Erika) was too large online, but I loved the way they looked in person.

If you would like to host your own event in San Diego, you can contact Erika at [email protected] and also check out her Bon Look page at BonLook.com/amb/erikakirkland.  I would like to thank all of my friends, family and especially Erika for making my Spectacle Soiree a success, cheers!

Them Bones

Since I bought the Rebecca Minkoff East West Skull Tote (post here and seen below), I’ve been adding a few skull & crossbones pieces to my wardrobe.  My cousin Regi even took note and bought me a cute scarf while in New York City a few months ago.  Along with black being a major staple in my closet, skulls and crossbones all are nods to my gothic tendencies.  I’ll bet I find more pieces in London!

  1. Skull bracelet from The Shangri-La at The LAB
  2. Skull sweatshirt from Hot Topic (not available online)
  3. East/West Tote by Rebecca Minkoff (no longer available online)
  4. Scarf, a gift from my cousin Regi (looks Alexander McQueen “inspired”)
  5. One of my favorite pictures of my son; blanket from Marshall’s last year
