Earth Day: How I Minimize My Carbon Footprint

With Earth Day coming up tomorrow, my office has asked all employees to send in 3 suggestions for our “Acts of Green”.  Typing up my suggestions for submission prompted me to think about what else is it that I do to be more eco-friendly.  What do you do to minimize your carbon footprint?

Don’t scrap the scrap:  At work, one of the ways we “go green” is to use scrap paper before using any new notebooks or tablets.  The way we do this is by taking the paper that is left behind on printers (that doesn’t need to be shredded) and reusing them as scrap paper.  While there is print on one side, the other side is perfectly fine to take notes.

I’ll Tumble 4 Ya:  I recently purchased a few tumblers, mostly for coffee.  But I recently bought one of those BPA safe clear tumblers (with a straw) for my juices and soft drinks. Before, these types of reusable tumblers used to run upwards of $15.99 or more. Now, you can get them as low as $5 each. Our office did away with paper cups a few Earth Days ago, so these tumbers have come in very handy.

Be a Bag Lady:  Back in the early 90’s when I went to Toronto, I remember my cousins bringing their own plastic grocery bags to the supermarket. They stated that the grocery stores in Canada charge if you continue to use their bags. I have heard that may be the case here in the US as well, so why not just stock up on those reusable bags that are usually $2 and under?  I actually started collecting these types of bags, and have some from several different cities (including London).  I keep them in my car and use them when I grocery shop.  I can just recycle them when they become soiled, and because of the availability and the price, they are easily replaced.

When I go clothing/accessory shopping, I carry a couple of fabric and foldable ones in my purse (I have a Topshop one and one from H&M).  They are very compact, and when it comes time to bring home my purchases, I just pull them out and hand them to the cashier.   I’ve actually been complimented by cashiers in many stores, saying it’s great that I carry them and actually use them.

Take advantage of vintage:  Speaking of shopping, another great way to “give back” to Mother Earth is to shop vintage and second-hand.  Bella of The Citizen Rosebud, is always sharing her vintage/second-hand finds and treasures, but two recent posts that stood out that I’d like to call out for Earth Day are SHOP SECOND HAND FIRST and Lemon Drop Swap.  These are great ways to ensure that you are being a responsible shopper by limiting consumption and perpetuating sustainability.

Remix Update: Outfits 23-28

I’ve been very good at taking remix pictures lately, and I think I have finally used all of the pieces and I am truly remixing my outfits.  But I must admit, I had been lazy and actually missed some outfits, so now I’m in catch-up mode.  I’ve been taking pictures everyday so far, taking a couple of shots right when I arrive home from work.  During one of my self-portraits, Dominic ran into my shot, which made us both crack up.  Life happens!

Everything’s Coming Up Roses

Ever since I bought my Michael Kors watch (seen first here), I have been loving the vintage vibe of rose gold. After I received my new Tiffany & Co catalog and saw all the new silver and rose gold charms, rings and necklaces, I started to think about what to wear with rose gold. I’ve been seeing a lot of neutrals and nudes for spring and summer, and I think rose gold would be a great compliment to this type of palette.

Friend Friday: Gratitude

Happy one-year anniversary to FBFF!  I know I’ve only been doing this officially for two months now, but it truly has been great to be a part of this blogging community.  This week’s Friend Friday is all about gratitude and who do we thank when it comes to who we are, both personally and as bloggers.

When it comes to be personally – I owe a lot of who I am to:

My friends and family.  They keep me grounded and make me deliriously happy.  They allow me to be who I am, and although it’s not always pretty, they accept it all.  But, they also never let me get away with too much craziness and they always reminded of where I came from.

When it comes to be professionally – I owe a lot of who I am to:

My father.  He always taught me to always give everything I do my best shot and never do anything half way.  That way, whether you succeed or fail, you know that you never gave anything less than everything you had at the time you were giving it.

When it comes to the art of blogging, I’m grateful to these people for helping me through some rough spots:

Really, I want to thank my husband first and foremost for understanding the need for me to use my blog as a creative outlet.  He is often my photographer and also my sounding board for ideas and thoughts.

But as far as the blogging community, there were so many inspirational people.  However, these bloggers come to mind when I think of influences and revelations of my blogging style: Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere, Kelly of The Glamourai, Kristy of Full Time Fabulous and Vahni of Grit & Glamour.

When I first re-started my blog, I sent an email to Emily and she wrote back (you can see her response in my “About” section), which was very sweet of her because I did not realize then how popular her blog was at the time.  I was flattered that she was touched by my email and thoughtfully wrote back.  She made me realize that not everything is about fashion and you can include your personality and other aspects of your life in your blog.

My favorite all-time blog is The Glamourai.  Kelly is really a dare-devil when it comes to fashion, and she reminds me that fashion is supposed to be fun, but can also be very glamorous at the same time.  Her “mixology” has inspired me to really mix it up when it comes to prints and colors.  I’m always pleasantly surprised at her creativity and fashion spontaneity.

Kristy has always been so sweet, right when I joined IFB, through her participation in the contest for FTF and to this very day.  She has made me realize the value of community when it comes to blogging and I am forever grateful to her for that!

I discovered Vahni’s blog through Kristy, and it has truly become my go to blog Bible for anything and everything that has to do with smart blogging.  Not only does she have great style, but sound advice.  I’m still reading through all of her posts and have had many “ah-ha!” moments.  I’ve learned a lot, and I’m still learning from V’s blog.

One last thought post-script:  I owe quite a bit to Independent Fashion Bloggers.  What a great network and community of like-minded people, not to mention all of the great blogging advice articles and of course the Links a la Mode.  I owe a lot to them for showing me some of the ropes, and introducing me to so many blogs I wouldn’t have otherwise known were out there.

One blogging challenge I’m grateful happened because it made me stronger was…

Starting over.  My first blogging experience was very tough because it solely had to do with the passing of my father.  I was so sad and that was constantly reflected in my first blog.  I stopped writing back then because I had lost direction after the sadness had dissipated.  I’m so glad that my friends and family encouraged me to write again and now I find it fulfilling and so much fun.

To my readers, I’d like to say…

Thank you SO much!  I have been hearing a lot of great feedback from my friends and those of you in the blogging community.  There are times when I feel like saying “Is it really worth it?” because of the time it takes to keep up a blog.  But this has been such a great creative outlet and I’m glad that so many are interested in the things that I have to say, the things I create and about my style.  I hope you all continue to follow along!

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is a Google group for bloggers to converse on a given topic each week. Katy from ModlyChic sends the questions, bloggers post their responses and then add their post to the list of people sharing their thoughts on the subject matter. To get started, check out this great tutorial on Grit & Glamour here.

Remix Update: Outfits 21 & 22

I was actually running around between errands for these next two outfits for my remix.  It’s on days like this when I’m usually in t-shirts and jeans.  But I hate for these types of outfits to be boring, so I really try to add just a little more to jazz them up a bit.  It’s also been a bit on the chilly side out here in usually sunny Southern California, so I started to break out my scarves and hats.  However, I’m still wearing sandal-type shoes, so I’m not sure if I’m convincing anyone that it’s really cold out here!

Outfit:  Previously remixed – Coincidence & Chance sweater; Old Navy jeans; Jovovich & Hawk for Target t-shirt; Cotton On scarf; Aldo shoes; Juicy Couture ring; Coach sunglasses

Outfit: Previously remixed – Cotton On sweater; Depeche Mode t-shirt; H&M jeans; Jeffrey Campbell shoes; Coach sunglasses; Michael Kors watch; Juicy Couture ring/Not worn yet – Forever 21 scarf; Scala Pronto Hat; OMD concert tote bag; Unknown brand cuff (from Macy’s)

Remix Update: Outfits 17 – 20

I put together pictures of outfits that had the same basic element worn different ways by changing up the accessories and layering pieces. I think this really displays the concept of remixing, since I never put together an index of wardrobe pieces (sorry folks, no time and no Photoshop).

The first pair of pictures are of a dress from Caro London. I bought my first Caro London dress from Plumo.com, then went directly to the official site for this dress. I love this dress because it has a very pretty pattern with lots of girly frills.

Outfit (above): Previously remixed – Steven Madden Luxe boots; Cotton On sweater/Not yet worn – Caro London dress

Outfit (below): Previously remixed – Motivi sweater; Aldo shoes; Caro London dress; Coach sunglasses (both outfits)

The second pair of pictures are of the Kinder Aggugini dress. It’s so easy to wear because the fabric is light and does not wrinkle at all. I wore it last week with a simple cardigan and awesome leather peep-toe shoe boots by MKRT that I bought from DSW right before Lent. I then switched it up a bit this week and added some texture by wearing it with my H&M velvet blazer and suede boots.

Weekend In Pictures: Mini-Golf Mayhem

These pictures were actually taken last weekend, but it’s a weekend nonetheless!  We took Dominic to play mini-golf for the first time at a place called Boomers, which has 2 little miniature golf courses, a go-kart raceway, and a kiddie amusement ride area.  Dominic is always talking about playing golf because of my husband.  Until we can take him to an actual course to watch daddy play, we will be taking him to places like this that will allow him to do whatever he wants to.

Not only did Dominic play a little golf, he also went on his first official amusement park ride.  At first Deon said he was a bit scared.  But after a few go-arounds, he was asking for more.  Dominic is just at 36 inches, so some of the other rides will have to wait.  But now I know who my husband’s rollercoaster partner will be from now on!

My first hole in one...ever!

Easing Into the Weekend

I decided to take it easy with today’s entry and share a few deals I received this week.  Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Purpose & Re-Purpose: THREADshow 2011

On Sunday April 3rd, I attended the THREADshow at Horton Plaza’s Event Space. I attended the event last September (see the post here), but sadly missed another one in December. I received an email reminder for this seasons show, which allowed me to attend as press this time around. I decided to head there early, and I’m glad I did! Arriving early allows you to not only take advantage of being able to get at the goods first, but it allows you to take in everything with a few go-arounds before committing to the booths you really want to spend some time in.

If you are unfamiliar with the THREADshow, here is a little summary:

About THREAD Show // Good Style. Good Value. Good Karma.
THREAD Show is a travelling juried showcase of the best independent fashion and home designers on the West Coast, and the music and art that rock their world. This dynamic one-day retail environment has showcased more than 7,000 emerging designers since its inception in 2003. THREAD allows consumers a unique opportunity to support their local economy, reduce their carbon footprint and discover emerging designers while scoring deals and purchasing one-of-a-kind wares in a fun and unique setting. For more information, visit www.threadshow.com.

If you like up and coming indie artists, clothing and accessory designers as I do, then you will enjoy this type of event. When I arrived, I bumped into one of my former choir members, who had won tickets from another blog. It was fun to catch up, but once inside, we went our separate ways in order to make it to all of the fantastic booths. I always love walking through the art area first. The coolest part of the gallery this year was the Toygami display, which is a play on origami, Japanese paper-folding art.

There were a couple of new things this year: one was the “Man Cave”, equipped with a bar and putting green. I considered asking my husband to help take pictures, and maybe he would have come if he knew about the “Cave.” What I liked instead of the runway show was the “Live Style Series”, which was a live display of models styled by 5 different local fashion bloggers. Attendees could then vote for their favorite. I will have to keep up on the THREADshow blog so that I can participate in their next blogger event!

After a couple of rounds, I stopped at a rack of eye-catching purses. They were convertible purses with a studded design that looked like the Union Jack. Called “The G Collection, Fashion with a Purpose” I met the creator, Galyn, who showed me around their little booth, which also displayed hats and jewelry. She basically does most of her business through these types of events, and a portion of her sales goes towards philanthropic causes, such as Doctors Without Borders. I knew I wanted one of those studded purses, and hearing everything Galyn had to say made for an easy decision to make a purchase. Already a great deal at $40, it was nice that it was also accompanied by warm feelings of doing something good.

I was very glad to find a knit clothing line out of New Orleans called liaMolly. I was not able to really dive in and look at all they had to offer last year. When I saw their booth this year, I knew I had to stop by and hang out a bit. The line consists of beautiful knit clothing that are not just your typical sweater set. These are delicately crafted retro/vintage looking knits done in exquisite patterns and colors. I found a beautiful kimono-style black sweater and snapped it up at a mere $45. I got the chance to chat with Kaye, the C.O.O of liaMolly, who was very gracious although she was quite busy. I loved the little suitcase display!

I ended my day at a booth called Bottle Hood. My upcycling radar honed in on this display because of the unusual use of Bombay Sapphire and Skyy Vodka bottles that I saw in the distance. I spoke to Leslie of Bottle Hood, who gave me a little background on their concept. Bottles are reclaimed from local restaurants, bars and even local events which would have been thrown out. They use local crafts people to turn these ordinary bottles into fantastic glassware such as tumblers, lamps, vases and candle accessories. Visually, I couldn’t get enough of all of the items, but purchased just 4 pieces of shaped glass that I intend to turn into necklaces. That doesn’t mean that I won’t buy more! The actual store is located in El Cajon, but they also sell their items online. Additionally, they also make appearances at local farmers’ markets and street fairs, accepting bottles that would have been thrown away or recycled, to create more of their wonderfully earth-friendly goods.

All in all, another fun and successful THREADshow. I found a few good bargains that not only keeps me stylish, but saves the planet and gives back to the community. Special thanks to Dara Bu from Elle Communications for the reminder email (I’ve signed up for the updates now!). Thanks also to Gayln Gorg of The G Collection, Kaye Bertheaud of liaMolly, and Leslie Tiano of Bottle Hood for taking the time to chat with me.

My Finest City: FTF Blog Event for 4/6/2011

Kristy Elena of Sunglass Hut’s Full Time Fabulous is hosting a blog event today centered around either heritage or your current home city. Because putting together a post about my Filipino heritage would take more time than I had available for this event, I decided to post a simple pictorial of my hometown and current residence of San Diego, California.

I used Polyvore to gather some of my favorite images of San Diego, including the Jeffrey Campbell shoes I posted about yesterday named after my hometown. Being a native, I had to include my favorite hometown teams:  the Padres baseball team and the Chargers football team. I also added a couple of things I like to do like getting around my beautiful town and the world-famous Comic Convention, affectionately known to all here as “The Con”.

If you haven’t had the chance to visit “America’s Finest City”, come on down! It’s a big city that feels like a small town. But if you’re itching for some bright lights and big city, it’s just a 2 hour drive to Hollywood and a quick flight to San Francisco. I was born and raised here, met my husband here, and we are raising our son here. Although I claim to love several cities out there (especially London), my heart will always be right here in San Diego.
