Little Flights of Fancy

I wore my little swallow dress from Cotton On today with these platform sandals because it was unusually warm for November here in San Diego.  But I added little touches that made the outfit more fitting for fall:  a cardigan, a wool hat, and dark tights.  I’m also wearing one of my new cameos, too.  Along with the little bits of tan and brass, the cameo made the outfit feel very vintage, even though the dress was brand new (as of yesterday!).

Coat of the Week: Mad for Plaid

My husband bought me this cute little jacket a couple of years ago.  Now that it’s finally a bit colder, I’m starting to layer a bit more.  He bought it when I was pregnant, so it’s got a little bit of a swing to it.  Because of this and because it’s lighter than it looks, it makes for a great layering piece.  I’m going to stock up on more tights and lighter long and short sleeve solid t-shirts to fit snugly under some of my dresses and cardigans.

I also just recently found my iPod and started listening to it again (it was lost in all of the shuffling of items in our bedroom).  I also let my son take a listen, too and I think he may want his own little music listening device!  I bought a very cool pair of retro-looking headphones that look a bit like my husband’s that he uses as a professional DJ (except mine are smaller and come in three interchangeable colors).  As a tribute to my find, I’ve also included a list of artists of one of my favorite iPod playlists called “Electronic”.

ATB
Bedrock
Blancmange
Blank & Jones
Book of Love
Camouflage
Cruxshadows
Depeche Mode
Einsturzende Neubuten
Erasure
Fad Gadget
Heaven 17
Human League
Kraftwerk
Leather Strip
New Order
Nizer Ebb
OMD
Paul Van Dyk
Pet Shop Boys
The Beloved
Yaz

Standout favorites (that aren’t Depeche Mode):

“Tainted Love (2XS Remix) by Soft Cell – I consider it a drum and bass version of the song, maybe even speed garage.  Either way, it’s a fantastic version of the song.

“I Want Candy (Razed in Black Mix)” by Bow Wow Wow – If you like Razed in Black, you will absolutely love this version.  It’s got a heavier, driving beat that puts of the otherwise usually poppy version of this song on it’s ear.

“Lie to Me” by Depeche Mode, but re-done by Razed in Black – It’s always interesting to hear how another artist would interpret your favorite artist, and this does not disappoint.

“The Great Commandment” by Camouflage – When I heard this track for the first time, I was surprised at how much it sounded like Depeche Mode.  “That Smiling Face” is my all time favorite by Camouflage, but a little too slow for this playlist.

I was obsessed with making playlists when I first got my iPod and iTunes.  I know my iPod is a bit old, but it has all of my honeymoon pictures from Europe from our computer that crashed two years ago and quite of bit of music that I ripped from my CD collection.  I haven’t figured out how to download them without completely wiping out the iPod and losing them all.  Hopefully I can find a good program transfer them.  The downside is that I can’t upload anything new either.  I may just have to buy a new iPod to keep making the kinds of playlists I want.

Hearts & Flowers

The weather is so ever-changing that I did start getting out my coats this week.  I wore my wellies to work earlier in the day because of the rain, and brought my new booties from Lulus.com to change into at the office (you can still get an exclusive 15% off discount until Oct 29 with this code).  The rain lightened up a bit and I was able to get a few pictures in a couple of my favorite pieces:  a floral print dress by Alice Temperley and a black wool empire waist swing coat with velvet accents by Erin Fetherston, both from their “Go International” lines for Target.

This jacket is so well made and the heart applique on the back and pockets makes it that much more adorable.  I wore it everywhere when I first got it.  The empire waist was great for when I was pregnant and went London during the fall two years ago.  I only saw it on one other person just this year, when my husband and I were in New York in May.  It was the first coat I thought about when the weather started to cool down, and will be a coat I return to time and again.

Military Luxe

I’m very glad that I treated my new suede boots last week because we received an unexpected shower today.  You can see water the beading on the boots, which is a good thing (the rain just shook off of them when I got inside).  We only stayed out in the rain long enough to capture a few pictures of my military/utilitarian outfit today, softened with a pretty umbrella, vintage looking cameo and sparkly scarf.  If the rain persists this week, I may have to set aside my boots for when the weather is more permitting.

Outfit:  Coach umbrella; Old Navy jacket; H&M top; Topshop jodhpur pants; ASOS leopard print scarf; Forever 21 cameo brooch and ring; Steve Madden boots (seen here)

Tea Time

The weather out here in California has gone up several degrees this week, so my “Coat of the Week” idea didn’t quite make sense, even when most of my day is spent in an air-conditioned office.  Since I’ve been wearing these great shoes everyday from the moment I bought them (seen here and here), I thought I would make this more of a “Shoe of the Week” pictorial.

Along with my platform pumps, I wore a tea dress with my brand new ring that I got from the Thread Show (seen here) and black tights for contrast.  Pretty tea dresses are wonderful things to own because they can be dressed up or down (I like mine in polka dot, ditsy floral or Liberty prints).  Although it’s as hot as it is, I tried to ring in the fall by topping the outfit off with a cardigan.  But I’ll be drinking iced-tea instead of my favorite piping hot English Breakfast or Earl Grey with cream until the weather cools down again.

Easy Like Saturday Afternoon

We decided to go out for the day with Dominic on Saturday.  After a little bit of a delay (because we were deciding where to go), we ended up at beautiful Kate Sessions Park.  I brought my new shoes and one of my favorite clutch purses because I wanted to try my outfit a little dressed up with heels for some pictures.  I wish I could wear shorts to the office, so this outfit represents how I would wear them.

After taking pictures, I kicked off the heels and threw on sandals so that my husband and I could run around with Dominic and his little soccer ball.   Although it’s almost October, the weather is still so sunny and warm enough to wear lighter fabric (although I’m anxious to start wearing coats and layers!).  It’s times like these that I love living in San Diego.

Taking care of Dominic between shots.

Wearing the Bamboo shoes from Lulus.com seen here (so cute and surprisingly comfortable!)

Coat of the Week: Semi-Casual Friday

After a full morning of taking care of some things for my mom yesterday, my sister came over in the afternoon to help me with some of my “Coat of the Week” pictures.  I think she did a great job, don’t you?

A cashier at the grocery store said to me, “I love that jacket, you must be receiving tons of compliments on it!  It’s something that can make any outfit feel sexy, either dressed up or down.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Coat of the Week: Minor Setback

As my husband and I were setting up for pictures of the first outfit for my “Coat of the Week” pictorial, we experienced a minor setback:  I broke my camera.  I was walking away from my husband while handing him the camera and didn’t realize that my hand was still in the strap.  Next thing I know…crash!  My little Canon Power Shot never stood a chance against that tough pavement.  We need to send it into the manufacturer to get it fixed.

We managed to get a picture before it completely stopped working.  Luckily for us, we have more than one working camera.  I’ll be using either a Pentax Optio 750Z or my husband’s Sony A (alpha) 350.

When at first you don’t succeed…try, try again!

Favorite New Polish: My Private Jet

Prior to FNO last Friday, I hopped into my car to get to a local salon to get my nails all gussied up for the event.  The place I had originally wanted to go was literally down the street from my in-law’s house.  When I got there, I discovered that they relocated, so I drove up Rainbow (a Las Vegas street) in a mad search for any available salon.  I finally found a place and pulled an Elle from “Legally Blonde” (for those who have not seen the movie, she nearly causes an accident after locating a salon for a nail “emergency”, which ironically this was).   Simplicity Salon is the name of my new favorite local Las Vegas salon.  All the gals there were great and my nail technician, Trista, was particularly cool.

While there, I felt that I needed something sparkly yet understated.  I also felt my inner-goth needed to be satisfied with something dark.  I found something that actually combined the two in the best way possible.  The color is called “My Private Jet” by OPI, a glittery metallic grey that looks even better on than in the bottle.  I later discovered that there was some controversy with the color because it had undergone several incarnations (up to four different versions).  From what I’ve seen and read, the original versions were brighter and had a holographic sheen to it.  The later versions appear to be a little more toned down, which I happen to really like.

I also found out that Kim Kardashian asked for this color by name on her reality show.  Well, that’s gotta count for something, right?
