The Power of Customization: eShakti.com

DSC00255 (2) (825x1280)

I am definitely someone who takes garments to a seamstress or tailor to get things to fit correctly, or I will customize something to get it to be the way I want.  So when I was asked by eShakti.com to review a garment, I was excited to see just how it all worked for an online shop.  The premise of the site is to provide affordable clothing that can be purchased in standard sizes, or that can be customized to fit to one’s exact measurements.  When ordering, standard sizing is available from 0 to 36W and they also ask for your height.  For a small fee, if you wish to further customize your order, you can enter all of your measurements to receive a garment that is made to fit only you (and they will save your meausrements for additional and future orders)!  Depending on the type of garment you are ordering, you can also choose sleeve length, sleeve type, and even the length of your skirt or dress.  For instance, if you really like a dress pattern, but you would like a halter top in a shorter length as a casual dress, but maybe you would also enjoy it sleeveless in a longer length for a dressier affair, you can purchase the same dress in two different styles.

The internet allows us to be extremely customer-centric by enabling the buying to be inter-active.

Shakti means power in Sanskrit.

Internet + Shakti = eShakti.com.

I chose the Asymmetrical Fan Pleat Blazer because of the awesome design and detail.  As soon as I added it to my “Awesome Outfits” board on Pinterest, it was repinned more than anything I have added to date, which means many of you out there agree!  I chose a standard size, but entered my height and customized the sleeve to be a longer length.  It took only two weeks from when I put in my order to when I received this beautiful, lined wool boucle jacket, exactly as it was pictured on the site and it fit perfectly.

DSC00216 (2) (851x1280)

I styled it two ways to show that this jacket is incredibly versatile and can be worn on a night out or for running errands with my son (who decided to join in the picture).  This jacket is one of many fantastic pieces on the eShakti site, including retro flare dresses, skirts, and cardigans.  If you are new to eShakti, your first time registration will also earn you a $25 gift certificate.  I signed up myself, but I’m still deciding which dress I want because there are so many cute things to choose from.  If you love retro styling, tailor made to fit you perfectly at affordable prices, check out eShakti.com!

Ranking Full Stop: The English Beat in Concert

IMG_4858Last Friday, I went with my girls to see The English Beat in concert at Belly Up in Solana Beach.  For $20, it was a steal to see Dave Wakeling’s version of the band (basically, the US version), so we made it a girl’s night out by starting the evening out with dinner, then ending with the concert.  We arrived during the end of the opener, 2 Tone Sounds, and waited patiently for The English Beat to take the stage.  I’m glad we decided to go to the Friday show because the Saturday show sold out!   The Belly Up tavern is a great venue because any show feels completely intimate.  The only issue I had that night was some of the rambunctious crowd members who seemed to think it was cool to pick a fight every 15 minutes.  Can’t we all just get along and enjoy the music?  While Rholnna and Janice got fed up with being shoved around, Regi and I braved the crowd and stayed on the floor.  Eventually, the crowd started to disperse and we had enough personal space around us to dance.

DSC00186 (2) (1280x897)

I loved hearing songs like “Save It For Later”, “I Confess”, “Best Friend” and “Mirror in the Bathroom” because those were standards that I heard on 91X when I was a teen and I remember the videos like it was yesterday.  I was then very pleasantly surprised when I heard “Can’t Get Used to Losing You” because that was something that I didn’t hear on the radio at all and came to know it because I played it over and over on my cassette player.  But I was even more surprised to hear General Public songs, including my favorite “Never You Done That” and every 80’s radio staple, “Tenderness”.   I know that Ranking Roger heads up the UK version of The Beat, but I think I like Dave Wakeling’s version because when I close my eyes, I can imagine feeling what it was like to see them back then, and Dave sounds just as fantastic as ever.

DSC00201 (2) (1280x853)

I couldn’t recall song order, but here is a rough estimate from my memory.  I’m sure I’m missing a song or two:

  1. Rough Rider
  2. The Tears of a Clown
  3. Hands Off…She’s Mine
  4. Twist and Crawl
  5. I’ll Take You There
  6. I Confess
  7. Click Click
  8. Save It for Later
  9. Can’t Get Used to Losing You
  10. Whine and Grine/Stand Down Margaret
  11. Never You Done That
  12. Tenderness
  13. Ranking Full Stop
  14. Mirror in the Bathroom

It was quite a fun night, and even more fun to people watch when you are completely stone (freezing) cold sober.  Janice and I are at the start of our Whole30 for the New Year, Regi had a long drive that night and Rholnna doesn’t drink, so it was waters all around for us.  There were lots of ladies jumping the stage, drunkenly shaking their groove things, and we all just happily chuckled from the crowd.  Even with the gratuitous stage grinding and near scuffles, I will definitely catch The English Beat when they come back in town to have a ranking good time, full stop!

Mint Condition

Mint Condition
If you follow me on Pinterest, you’ll see that I’m very taken by the color mint. It’s so fresh and perfect for spring. I was inspired by the very cute shoes from ModCloth and Miista, then took to Polyvore to create a casual set and a dressy set. I envision wearing either style with a pair of black skinny jeans so that the mint just pops (click the picture above, or the links below for all the buying information).  I know it will seem like an unusal musical departure, but in the 90’s, I was very much into Hip Hop and R&B. I thought it was appropriate, given the title of this post, to include “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” by Mint Condition (click the picture below for the video). Enjoy!

Pretty Vacant

IMG_3945 (2) (915x1280)

I wore this to the San Diego Style Bloggers meet up last November, but did not get the chance to post the pictures.  The only difference is that I’m wearing my new Bon Look glasses and different shoes.  It was raining the night of the meet up, so I wore boots rather than these fuchsia pumps, fearing that they would be ruined.  I know it’s a bold outfit, but this Sex Pistols shirt deserved some strong elements like the pops of color and metal accessories, like the Swear Rings and the London Underground cuff.  The lyrics “We’re so pretty/oh so pretty” kept coming to mind while taking these pictures.  Pretty? I hope you all think so!  Vacant? Not a chance!

I attended an event that Cameron of the blog 33 Avenue Miquelon would be proud of:  A few weekends ago, my husband, son and I all went to The San Diego International Auto Show.  Our poor little boy had the beginnings of a cold, but stuck it out because he loves cars so much.  After we got home and he took a nap, we showed him all of the pictures we took to remind him of what he saw, and he remembered every little bit of what he experienced.  What I loved most about the show was that we could walk around freely to check out all the cars we just dream about, without the pressure to make a purchase.  My husband saw many a car that he would love to someday own, and he even said he was like a kid in a candy store.  For those of you in the San Diego area, I highly recommend attending this fantastic annual event.  Cheers!

I’ve been home quite a bit these past few months, so I have had a lot of time to spend with my son, apply for jobs, and work on my home.  In addition to also having a bit more time to work on my blog, I’m finding that I’m picking up on a few projects that I’ve begun but never finished.  I’ve posted some of my adventures in baking in December, so here is a sneaky peek at just a couple of crafty things that I’m working on right now.  I’ll be sure to include instructions on how to do each of my projects, in case you like what you see.  My mantra for this year: DO IT YOURSELF!

Any Second Now 2012 in Review

Happy New Year to all!  I’ve never really shared my stats before, but since this year will mark my third with this blog, I thought it would be fun to share where I’ve been and where I am now.  Here is a fun little fact as provided by WordPress, in addition to the link for my 2012 blog stats:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 32,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 7 Film Festivals.

(Click here to see the complete report on Any Second Now)

I would like to personlly thank Bella of The Citizen Rosebud and Sylvia of 40 Plus Style for being the top referers to my blog.  I would also like to thank Vahni of Grit and Glamour for sharing my my experience of completing the Whole30, causing it to have the highest views ever for one of my blog posts.  And finally, I would like to thank Stephanie of The Loudmouth Lifestyle for returning often to have the most comments on my blog.  These are blogging beauties who I have come to know in my time of blogging, and I adore and appreciate their support.

I want to thank everyone, including friends and family, who have followed Any Second Now throughout the nearly three years that I have been blogging, and I want to say hello and welcome to all new readers.  I am having a great time writing and sharing my personal style, fashion and music favorites, travel experiences, recipes, and family events.  I happily continue to keep in touch with bloggers I have met through this experience, whether it’s through their blogs or other forms of social media like Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook.  Additionally, I have met wonderful new friends and have had the thrill of collaborating with great companies and discovering fantastic new and interesting brands.  I hope you continue to follow and we’ll see what 2013 has in store!  Cheers!

Images of Christmas 2012

DSC00045 (2) (1280x1279)I can’t believe that Christmas has already come and gone!  Christmas Eve was celebrated at our house this year, which meant a lot of baking, cooking and preparing the house to receive dozens of our relatives.  My husband played Santa this year, and Dominic asked why.  Deon’s explanation was a very good one: Santa asks parents to help him because he gets so busy during Christmas Eve with all of the deliveries he must make before the morning.  After the party and the clean up Dominic and I prepared milk and cookies for Santa’s arrival.  He woke to find all of his wishes were answered: a train, a helicopter, and a Lightning McQueen Hawk.  Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas as well, and here’s to a happy and healthy 2013!

"Re-Live A Little" With Suki Bijoux

IMG_4694 - Copy (960x1280)

As mentioned previously, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a meet up for the San Diego Style Bloggers last month (post here). Not only did I meet and reunite with some fantastic local bloggers, but I also got the chance to chat with a couple of local jewelry designers. I instantly fell in love with the designs of Suki Bijoux, who creates original vintage infused jewelry, using authentic vintage pieces. I bought two pieces straight away at the meet up, and then bought six more later on because I was impressed by her use of the vintage materials, such as vintage maps, dictionary entries, sheet music and actual typewriter keys. I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with Suki at the meet-up, and then again later because she custom made a vintage dictionary ring that I wear everyday since I bought it. Suki is as beautiful as she is talented, and I have discovered that she and I have the same taste in music and have actually been to a few of the same concerts! I knew there was a reason we hit it off when we met!

In this brief interview, Suki explains how she got started and her inspiration behind the jewelry she makes. Support local designers, especially Suki Bijoux jewelry!

How did you make the decision to start your own business and how did you get started with jewelry specifically?

Well, unexpectedly really. Since an early age, I have always been creative by nature and had an affinity towards vintage memorabilia. As a young girl and into my early teen years, I spent countless hours tinkering with bits ‘n bobs I found here and there -creating artistic collages, jewelry, ephemera, and hand-sewn articles.

I married at 18 years old and was a mother to two beautiful children by 20; between raising children, being a full-time college student, and working there was very little time to pursue my creative outlet… until 3 years ago! What with my children now adults, I decided to re-kindle my creative ability and started a hobby making unique jewelry from vintage components. I started out using old typewriters and watches to make rings and cufflinks, and then ventured into using anything and everything circa 1900 – 1960.

One day, my husband brought to my attention just how much inventory I had made and he encouraged me to pursue an outlet for my creations. I visited a local boutique, who’s owner just fell in love with my designs, and offered to display/sell them. As it turned out, her customers loved them too! This was the start to what we know today as “Suki Bijoux”.

After the first delivery sold out, I made another… and all of those items sold too. I started to get really excited that people liked my creations, and was so inspired that I approached another local boutique with a sampling of “Suki Bijoux.” They loved it too! And so, one small step at a time, my business has grown slowly and steadily over the course of the past three years.

One year ago, I left my corporate job to pursue my new venture, my hobby gone wild… and there’s been no looking back. My designs are now in 18 boutiques between San Diego and San Clemente, with no end in sight.

Vintage Purse Suki Bijoux

When we chatted, you seem to gravitate towards a lot of vintage pieces that you rework. What inspires you most? Basically, do you seek out something to create, or are you inspired once you find a piece while out on a venture?

The inspiration evolves naturally. When I look at things, I try to envision if and how they can be re-worked into a piece of jewelry. Wherever I am, whether it’s on vacation in Europe or at a local Estate Sale, I’m always looking for unique vintage items to incorporate into my “Suki Bijoux” designs. For example, earlier this year my husband and I were vacationing in Italy, and ran across a Flea Market along the Grande Canal; I found some spectacular vintage Venetian buttons, tiny old hand-blown Morano glass flowers, and vintage postcards from the turn of the century. Occasionally an amazing item catches my attention, and I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to do with it – sometimes months will go by until one day its’ purpose enlightens me and components seem to fall into place. I love it when that happens! Most days I go into my studio with no prior idea of what designs are going to come out of it… just like a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces come together. It’s so much fun!

Will you stick mainly to upcycling vintage or will you offer newer creations?

My passion is creating authentic vintage infused jewelry, and it’s really important to me to stay true to that origin. I love everything that original “Suki Bijoux” designs represent – a piece of authentic history, a peek into past lives and cultures, a story and journey from long ago, a twinkle of what once was. My creativity gives forgotten and unwanted vintage items another chance to be appreciated once again… with a new twist! Each “Suki Bijoux” item is a one-of-a-kind, designed and hand-crafted by myself, and infused with authentic vintage materials [circa 1900 – 1960] that I personally resource from all over the world. Truly unique in every essence.

Fleur De Lis Suki Bijoux

What would you say is your “style”? How is that reflected in what you have to offer in your own designs?

I like to wear styles that are timeless classics, and then add personality with accessories: a fabulous pair of shoes, a unique purse, a statement ring or necklace, or edgy earrings. As I’m designing “Suki Bijoux” accessories I always keep this in mind, “if I wouldn’t wear it, don’t make it”.

What do you enjoy best about what you do?

Now that’s a loaded question! I love the fact that I’m in tune with my creative mind again… it is so calming! Being self-employed is amazing: to be able to enjoy my home by working from my in-home studio, and to embrace the benefits of a flexible schedule. Most of all though, I just love creating jewelry that makes other people feel good when they wear it… it really makes my day when someone sends me a message telling me how much they love their “Suki Bijoux”.

I am so thankful and appreciative to all of those who have supported my business and ventured to “Re-Live A Little”.

Leave The BOY Alone
I know I haven’t posted any outfits in a while, so I’m using Polyvore to post something I would definitely wear.  I love BOY LONDON, and just purchased a sweatshirt from ASOS (pictured below).  This brand was iconic in the 80’s and has recently made a resurgence.  I’m not sure why I didn’t buy any BOY LONDON while I was in London this summer, but I’m making up for it now.  Don’t be surprised to see me rocking something similar to this outfit on the blog very soon!
