Wil Wheaton is my Geek Crush

As noted in last week’s post about Fifty Shades of Grey (post here), I love to read.  There was a point in time where I was reading mostly magazines because I was trying to be creative with my wardrobe or home decor.  But I always dive right back into books, like when I read at least ten books while on maternity leave back in 2009.  Although I love holding a good book because I love the feel of turning pages and the look of books on shelves, I have accepted that I am also equally enamoured with the covenience of downloading books to an eReader.

(Note: New visitors directed here purely because Wil Wheaton was tagged, I’m sure once you saw the title of this post and read that opening sentence, you just rolled your eyes at me and cursed me under your breath.  I beg you to keep reading.)

From a Star Trek convention where we met Michael Dorn, possibly 2001

So it was purely coincidental during this recent electronic book downloading binge that one of my co-workers, and fellow Trekkie, Nick, recommended Just a Geek (Unflinchingly honest tales of the search for life, love and fulfillment beyond the Starship Enterprise) by Wil Wheaton (the link is to his virtual bookshelf on his blog).  You read that right: I’m a Next Generation Trekkie and a bit of a sci-fi geek, have I not mentioned that before?  It’s well documented here on this blog that I am a music geek, specifically my extreme fandom for Depeche Mode and the number of concerts I attend annually.  But I have only made a couple of references to my sci-fi geekdom on posts here and here, not yet fully divulging the extent.  I will confess that I have attended the Comic Con three times, which in itself does not attest to my geekiness.  But I think voluntarily attending two Star Trek conventions, dragging my husband to the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas and also going to another Star Trek Experience here in San Diego does qualify me for level one geek at the very least.   Also, I must note that I’ve seen every episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG to us Trekkies) at least three times, if not more (my sister owns the DVDs and we had a marathon one weekend) and I have seen all of the TNG  movies in the theater.  In casual conversation, I am known to quote Star Trek, much to the chagrin of my husband.  I own a Borg teddy bear. Enough said.

My Borg bear from The Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas. I call him Loquacious (of course).

Now that I’ve made my confession, I can explain why I enjoyed Just A Geek (eight years after the fact, it was released in 2004).  I saw Stand By Me in the theaters when it first came out, and saw it several more times thereafter because I was a teenager infatuated with Ace (Kiefer Sutherland).  Ironically enough, my favorite parts of the movie did not involve Ace, but the relationship between the boys.  My favorite scenes are the ones where they are just talking in the round, especially Gordie Lechance’s pie eating story.  This was my first introduction to Wil Wheaton, and there began my sister’s crush.  Imagine her excitement when he was cast as Wesley Crusher on TNG .  Wil Wheaton in our living rooms, every week?  Rholnna was beyond excited.

Even after his five seasons on TNG, Rholnna continued to follow Wil Wheaton’s career.  She’s even met him twice: once at a Comic Con (where I met him, too, in the picture below) and then again at E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo).  It was about two years ago that I started to read Wil’s blog, In Exile, and began following him on Twitter (@wilw).  Still, that didn’t clue me into the struggles he had with an acting career that I had no idea had stalled after TNG

Just a Geek chronicles how Wil’s writing career began, interspersed with the beginnings of his blog.  It also explains why he left TNG and his struggle to separate himself from TNG in hopes of having a successful movie career.  Although he had some work after TNG, it was not nearly the kind of work he envisioned having after the critical acclaim of Stand by Me.  I expected Wil to be a bit snarky and witty because of his Tweets, so I definitely laughed out loud throughout most of the book.  I even geeked a little that he wrote about a memory that included Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode.

At Comic Con, possibly 2002

What I didn’t expect was how candid the book would be and the effect it had on me emotionally.  I actually cried reading this book.  I ached at the heartbreak Wil felt after failed auditions and the toll it took on him & his family financially.  I had no idea that he was originally in Star Trek: Nemesis (during Deanna Troi & William Riker’s wedding reception), and that much of his part ended up on the cutting room floor (apparently, he’s not even in the DVD extra footage).  After reading how much it meant to him returning as an adult and not The Kid to the Star Trek set, and how much fun he had with his former co-stars, it was gut wrenching to know that it felt all for naught, even though Wil was resilient.  I then cheered when he triumphantly was asked to join the 15th anniversary of TNG celebration through the campaigning of his fans, after he was initially told he wasn’t really a part of the Star Trek family.

I breathlessly read this book in about a day (technically two nights).  I’m one to hurry through because I’m an anxious reader, so I know I’ll be reading this again at a slower rate to ensure I catch everything.  Because of Just A Geek, I just downloaded another book of his called Dancing Barefoot and will read his other books as well.  Then I’m going to watch all of the episodes of his appearances on The Big Bang Theory (Evil Wil Wheaton anyone?). I’ve told my sister about the book and explained that if she is at all the fan of Wil Wheaton that she claims to be, that this is something she must read immediately (I think we may even attend w00tstock this year). Yessiree, Wil Wheaton is definitely my geek crush.

Blue Baby Doll

I know the dress isn’t blue, but title of this post is for my shoes.  These are the cute little pumps that I posted about here.  I intended to wear this outfit to my god-daughter’s 18th birthday party a couple of weeks ago.  But because my mom had a reaction to her antibiotic, we ended up in the hospital most of the day and into the evening of the debut.*  I may bring this little outfit along to London for a night out, which is funny because I put this outfit on for the picture, then took it off to spend a quiet night at home.

Outfit – Forever 21 dress (old); Betsey Johnson shoes from DSW; Rebecca Minkoff MAC purse; Wendy Brandes rings; Michael Kors watch; iSee glasses from GlassesUSA

*(Edited to add that my mom is totally fine.  She was given medication for an infection she didn’t have, so she was taken off the medication and is fully recovered.)

Nails Did & Done

Dominatrix (brand unknown); Ring set, a gift from my niece

There are times where I go through long dry spells where I’m just too lazy to get a manicure, either at home or at the salon.  Since my last mani-pedi with my niece for Mother’s Day (first picture above), I’ve overcome my manicure embargo after I purchased an adorable travel manicure set I found at CVS.  Coincidentally, I also discovered they had a great beauty sale, showcasing a selection of polishes by Sally Hansen and Wet N Wild on the cheap, with prices ranging from $.99 to $2.99.  I stocked up on quite a few colors (not all are pictured here), which means I can get my nails “did” more often!

Co-Bolt Blue by Sally Hansen & Trust Fund Baby by Spoiled/Wet N Wild

Gone Grey by Sally Hansen & Explosions After Dark by Spoiled/Wet N Wild; “F” ring by Wendy Brandes (from her swear ring set seen here); Color combination & ring inspired by Fifty Shades of Grey

The Parking Meteor Has Expired & Trust Fund Baby by Spoiled/Wet N Wild (the darker polish is black with an amazing green glitter tint)

A Strange Hour In Budapest: Red Edition

I missed the pre-order of the Deluxe Edition of Recoil’s “A Strange Hour In Budapest” on Alan Wilder’s birthday last week, and now they have sold out (it was in a digi-pack, individually hand stamped, numbered and limited to 1000).  I saw all of the hype leading to the release and still didn’t make the cut.  THANKFULLY the Shunt staff will be releasing a more standard edition of the DVD (the Red Edition).  I just ordered that yesterday, along with the 8GB USB Stick.

Angry Birds?

The title of this post is simply because my son is playing the game on both my Acer Iconia and my iPhone, and I was running out of titles for posts using the word “bird”.  This dress is so flowy & cute, but is so low-cut that I had to wear a little bandeau underneath.  Besides, I think the attention should be on the cut and print of the dress and these fabulous shoes, rather than my need for modesty, don’t you?

Outfit: Angie dress (from Lulus); Kenneth Cole straw purse (old); Matiko “Paris” shoes (from Ashbury Skies); Juicy Couture ring; Michael Kors watch; Coach sunnies; Nameplate necklace (from The Honeyroom)

F#@! The Paperwork: Why I Loved The "Fifty Shades" Trilogy

Picture previously posted: My Acer Iconia with the third book of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy, Wendy Brandes swear rings & Dominatrix nail polish

I was home for the past two weeks, caring for my mom post-op (a simple gall bladder procedure).  In addition to doing all of the things I needed to for my mom like driving her to follow-up appointments, cooking and cleaning, taking my son out so my mom could get some sleep, I did quite a bit of reading.

I’m a fairly avid reader.  My books of choice lately are purely for escapism:  The Bridget Jones’ series by Helen Fielding; the “Shopaholic” series by Sophie Kinsella; the “Sookie Stackhouse” series by Charlaine Harris and Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell (sometimes I get in the occasional biography).  I know they are not Pulitzer Prize winners, but they provide me with great sources of enjoyment.  These books are meant to be fun and one would have to just dive into each of the fictitious worlds and allow the waves of your imagination take you where you want it to go under the guidance of the author’s words.

I apply this same thought process to the uber-popular “Fifty Shades” trilogy by EL James.  I nearly passed up reading Fifty Shades of Grey, the first book of the series, because I had read that the author originally wrote it as fan fiction based on the “Twilight” books, which I cannot bring myself to read, although I watched the first movie twice because I needed to give it a chance (I just can’t get past the shimmering vampires who are saccharine versions of the day-walkers from “Blade”).   What piqued my curiosity of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy is that it is a love story laced with BDSM (bondage, domination, sadism, masochism).  Called “Mommy Porn”, the trilogy has been dismissed as poorly written & repetitive, and more importantly, unbelievable.   Some libraries have banned it due to the erotic nature of the books.

If you haven’t started reading the books yet, they center around the love affair between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.  Anastasia is a painfully innocent & beautiful 22 year-old recent college graduate (and virgin), who “accidentally” falls into the charms of 27 year-old Mr. Grey, a stunningly handsome yet psychologically damaged self-made billionaire.  I’m no book critic, so I’m not sure what I can offer in terms of style, dialogue, or literary reference, but I can say that these books kept me wanting more.  It appeals to everything that I love in any kind of romantic book: a woman who is determined to stay true to herself and is loved and cherished for all that she is by a man who would move heaven and earth to prove it to her.  I also feel a kinship with Anastasia, who, like me, loves Twinings English Breakfast Tea and who’s favorite city is London.

As expected from the reviews I’ve read, there are some very descriptive sexual situations all throughout the books, chronicling Anastasia’s sexual discovery through the guidance of Christian, but the BDSM scenes are far from graphic, and I’m sure most would say they are tame.  Many phrases used to describe certain sexual acts tend to be a bit repetitive, but the romantic tensions that lead up to them are sweet and funny (“Oh, f@#! the paperwork…” is one that comes to mind and you have to read the first book to get the reference).  There are some action scenes that had me anxiously turning the pages, eager to find out what happens next to this alluring couple, and the first two books have cliff hangers that cause you to hold your breath.  In the words of Christian Grey “don’t overthink” and just suspend your belief for a few moments to live in this crazy-sexy world.  Laters, baby!

(Note:  I’m re-reading the books because I’ve heard that Alexander Skarsgard is interested in the part of Christian Grey.  Oh would that it were true!)

Across the Pond: Our London Trip is Confirmed!

Picadilly Circus, London, 2008 – Photo by Cyrillynn

I know I have been talking about this for sometime, but everything is confirmed and set for our trip to London!  As mentioned, I’m going to travel across the pond with my best friend, Janice on August 15th of this year.  Because of wonderful service we received and the fantastic price, we’ll be staying at the same Premier Inn that my husband and I stayed at the last two trips to England, which is literally five minutes from Wembley Stadium.  Also, we are flying British Airways because they now fly directly out of San Diego.  Since Janice has never been to Europe before, in addition to hitting all of the London tourist spots, we are also planning to take a little side trip to Paris (*fingers crossed*).  Janice has been sending me texts with a countdown, which prompted me to add a cute little countdown to this post and to my sidebar.

Daisypath Vacation tickers

Keeping true to my fashionista inner goddess, I’ve also started thinking about what I’m going to wear, because I know we’ll be doing quite a bit of walking.  I’ve mostly got flats slated for our trip, but I’ve got a pair of low-heeled ankle boots and a pair of flatforms that I’m going to be sporting as well.  I definitely plan on shopping, posting outfits and documenting everything right here on the blog!

I just checked the Rewind Festival site for updates and I am beyond excited because they made an addition that I was not expecting to the show we’re attending on August 19th.  Here is the line up to date:

  • OMD (see my posts here and here for previously attended shows)
  • Lightening Seeds (“Pure” was one of their more popular songs)
  • Adam Ant and The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse
  • Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals)
  • Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet, newly added!)
  • The Straits (Formerly Dire Straits)
  • Wang Chung
  • Marc Almond (Soft Cell)
  • John Parr (of “St. Elmo’s Fire” fame)
  • Midge Ure (Ultravox)
  • The Christians (Not too familiar with their music, although I have heard of them)
  • T’Pau (“Heart & Soul”)

My only nervous moments are thinking about being away from Dominic so long while he’s in his toddler phase, because he’s so attached to me right now (I think my husband will be fine).  I know Deon will plan lots of outings with Dominic (most likely golf related), so I’m hoping that will keep him occupied.  Despite that little bit of anxiety, the excitement just keeps building and building!  Look out for more updates as the date gets closer.  Cheers!

This is a Modern World

I found this fantastic jacket in Anthropologie a few weeks ago as I used my annual birthday discount through their Anthro program (details here).  It’s by Leifsdottir and I immediately fell in love with it when I saw it (still available here).  Then I saw the massive discount and with my additional 15% off, this jacket became a steal.  Originally, I tried it on with jeans, a t-shirt and flats and it completely elevated my casual outfit.  After I bought it, I wore it to work to complement this 60’s inspired shift dress and boots.  It made me feel like hopping on a Vespa while listening to The Jam (hence the post title, video of the song included below).

Outfit – Alyn Paige dress; Vince Camuto boots; Leifsdottir jacket from Anthropologie (originally $498, down to $129, ended up only $110 with my discount); Coach sunnies; Stacked rings were a gift from my niece

Note: This jacket is quite roomy. I bought a size 6 (which I should never be able to fit in!), so be aware when buying it online.  Also, above is a picture showing the stripe down the sleeves, which cannot be seen in Anthropologie’s online pictures.

Cake Pops Made Easy: Bake Pops Review

My mom loves “infomercials” and is always bringing home the newest gadget that catches her eye during her shopping excursions.  Prior to her surgery, she brought home a pan set called Bake Pops because I had been talking about making cake pops, but never got around to doing it. I know that there is a way to make the popular cake pops organically by baking a full cake and forming them into balls by breaking the cake up and using cream cheese to bind the cake pieces (like this recipe on Little Miss Momma).  Knowing most of my friends make them that way, I felt a little bad about making them with the Bake Pops because I felt a little like I was cheating.

My very first batch was a bit of a disaster.  I just used the recipe as instructed on the cake mix box and used a glaze over them rather than frosting or candy coating, which made them more like donut holes than cake pops (and not as moist).  After another trial and error batch, the cake pops I made finally looked and tasted just like the ones I’ve bought or that were made by my friends.  All in all, I think this is a fairly easy way to make these popular cake pops if you use the tips I provided below.  Enjoy!

1.  Use the alternate recipe that they provide in Bake Pops instruction booklet:  Replace milk for water, add an extra egg and add a packet of pudding mix.  This will make your cake more dense and incredibly moist.  I used the Pillsbury Moist Supreme strawberry cake mix and added a small packet of vanilla pudding.  My kitchen smelled heavenly.

2.  The cake pops actually come out a bit egg-shaped after they come out of the oven, and they are not as round as they appear in the commercials (my husband says they look like acorns).  This is due to the slight separation between the top and bottom pans, in addition to the holes in the top pan (which allow for rising).  To get them to more of a “ball” shape, just scrape the middle and tops of the cake pops.  I put the lollipop stick in the part of the cake pop where they rose out of the hole, so that the rounded portion is on top.  Also, the candy coating can hide most anything if you don’t wish to scrape the imperfections away.

3.  Place your cake pops in the freezer to cool prior to coating them.  My niece came over to help make them, and we bypassed the cooling part and it took longer for the coating to set.  For my second batch, I placed them in the freezer prior to decorating them, and the coating set beautifully (note: strawberry cake & light coco candy coating makes for tasty cake pops).

(Note:  This is simply a review of the product, conducted solely at my discretion.  I did not receive any compensation, product or discounts when I purchased the product.)
