Catching Up: Kia Classic 2018

Back at it again, and I’m catching up on events as it’s been quite the busy few weeks!  If you follow my blog regularly, then you will know that my husband, Deon, is not just a fan of golf, but he is an amazing golfer as well, winning eight amateur tournaments.  Every now and again, we get the chance to attend a professional golfing event, and this year our first one was the LPGA Kia Classic in Carlsbad.  Deon’s favorite golfer is Paula Creamer, but we missed her as we attended the second to the last day of the event.  We ended up following Brooke Henderson and Lydia Ko for the bulk of the time we attended and we got to see Michelle Wie get interviewed after her round was finished.  Check out the amazing picture Deon captured below!

The tournament took place at Park Hyatt Aviara Golf Club and made me appreciate my hometown even more because I feel like I’m discovering time and time again that San Diego is simply one the prettiest cities in the world.  It was lovely to walk around with Deon as he is so knowledgeable about the sport, and he’s definitely in his element when he’s on the course.  Here are some pictures I took at the event, and I know you’ll agree that this course is absolutely gorgeous, as was the day.  Cheers!

Fashionably Late: August 2016 Events!

Catching Up Any Second Now

I cannot believe yet another month has come and gone!  Dominic is now back in school and we’re settling in for our Fall/Winter schedule.  This year, it means fitting in lots of school events, as well as accommodating my work/blogging/concert-going schedule with my husband’s busy business travel/golf schedule.  Speaking of concerts, I’ll do a recap soon, and will call out special concerts like the Rick Astley concert at the famous Troubador at the beginning of August.  Yes, you read that right:  Rick Astley, famous for the hit “Never Gonna Give You Up”, played only two sold-out shows in the US this year, one in New York and one in LA.  My best friend, Janice and I not only got to witness Rick all live and up close, but we also got to meet him afterwards!

So here is the mini-catch up, followed by separate posts for Elite Netoworking Group’s “A Night of Fashion & Fun” & the ZIUR Designs Fall 2016 Fashion Show.

Cheers and here’s to another great month!

At the beginning of August, I took Dominic and Joey for the last sample sale at Love Tatum.  It was my first time visiting Tatum’s studio, and since she has an adorable little French Bulldog, I knew it would be okay to bring Joey along for the outing.  I bought a new little silver ring and Dominic enjoyed the refreshments.

Also, congratulations to Tatum for being selected as a finalist for the “Woman of the Year 2016” through San Diego Magazine!

Lindsay Ryan of Affordably Accessorized is a blogger friend and fellow San Diego Style Blogger.  She announced the debut of August as “National Accessory Month” and asked bloggers and influencers to celebrate accessorizing and accessories all through the month.  I participated in one of her events at Bubbles Boutique mid-month, and not only did I get to spend some time with Lindsay herself, but I got to see Fatsani of TaSanni Designs and chatted with Bubbles Boutique owner Gayleen.  I also participated myself with showcasing some of my favorite accessories on Instagram and here on my blog.  Looking forward to what next year has in store!

Right after I left Bubbles Boutique, I headed over to Mercedes-Benz of El Cajon to check out the festivities as fellow blogger Vanessa Balli hosted the Pre-KAABOO Party!  Food was provided by Sausage & Meat, raffle prizes were given away every hour, pampering was done inside the showroom, and live music was provided by King Taylor Project and their friend davyrockett.

It definitely was a nice day to get out and enjoy a taste of what it will be like at KAABOO.  Are you going?  I’m going on Saturday September 17, courtesy of the tickets my friend Angi won at the Foodie Fest Encinitas Media Party back in May (post here)!

Weekend in Pictures: Anniversary Get Away To Palm Springs

A couple of weekends ago, my hubby and I had a lovely little get away to Palm Springs.  The first time we went as a family was back in 2011 (post here).  This time it was to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary.  We didn’t have a set plan on what to do or where to go, other than Deon’s scheduled tee time (of course).  If you’re wondering, I slept in while he played, then hit Downtown for a little shopping.  We winged it the entire weekend and simply aimed for relaxation.  The result was one of the best little mini-breaks we have had in a long time, filled with good food, good shopping (we even found a record store), and of course alone time with the love of my life.  Could anything be better?

Weekend in Pictures: The Farmers Insurance Open 2013

Last week, my family and I attended the Farmers Insurance Open held at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla.  If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that my husband is an avid golfer and fan of the sport.  He was able to acquire two season passes this year, so we attended the Zurich Pro-Am, which was last Wednesday.  Pictures were only allowed to be taken during the first three days of the event, so we were very lucky to go on Wednesday.  Not only did we get some fantastic pictures, but we also were able to get autographs and get up close and personal with some of the players.

My husband and I have been to the Farmers Insurance Open before, but without our son because he was too young at the time.  Now that he’s nearly four, we thought it was the perfect time to take him.  Dominic did such an amazing job at listening and being quiet when the time called for it.  He said that he had an “awesome time”, which leads me to believe that he not only truly understands the game of golf, but actually loves it.  We walked around for only about four hours because we could tell that Dominic needed a nap.  Being on such a great course got Deon itching to play, so he dropped us off and hit the links for a quick game.  He must have been inspired by the day because he golfed for three eagles in a row in the first three holes, and had the best score he’s had in nine holes (-5).  I guess it just takes being surrounded by greatness to light a fire in him and bring out the best in his game!

One of the best moments to come out of this event was when Deon went to get Hunter Mahan’s autograph.  Deon was able to catch him before he moved onto the next hole, and here is the conversation that took place:

Deon: “Hey Hunter, can I get your autograph for my boy?”

Hunter: “Where’s the boy?” (Looking around, and not seeing any small child near by.)

Deon: “Uh…” (Looking behind him, not realizing that we were sitting down a few feet away.):

A voice from the distance:  “It’s for his inner boy!” (Laughing from the small crowd around us.)

Deon:  “Here he is!” (Me, running with Dominic after hearing the initial exchange.)

Hunter: “Why doesn’t he ask me himself?”

Deon: “He’s shy…”

Everyone around then laughed and Hunter happily signed the autograph.  See, the pros are just regular guys, ready to give a good ribbing, but only if you’re ready to take it, and my husband certainly was!

Weekend in Pictures: The Best Day Ever!

For Mother’s Day last weekend, we celebrated first at home with a simple lunch with my sister, her husband and my niece, myself, my husband, my son and our mom.  I then treated my niece to a spa day while my hubby took our son out for a game of mini-golf.  After I treated Mei-Lin and myself to a mani-pedi, we shopped for two pretty rings because she gave me such a beautiful set of stackable ones.  My sister said she picked them out herself (Mei-Lin already has great taste)!  We then had Tutti Frutti yogurt to end our day of relaxation.  Meanwhile, my husband called us and proudly proclaimed Dominic shot his first hole-in-one on #12!  As Mei-Lin said, that was the best day ever.  Hope you had a great weekend!

First Time Golfer

One sunny afternoon, my husband decided to take us golfing with him at a local golf course in National City.  Dominic has been to a driving range, but never out on an actual course.  This was the perfect day and the perfect course to take him to because it’s only 9 holes and my husband wasn’t paired up with another golfer or group.  I was not only impressed with how much my husband’s golf game has improved, but with how well-behaved my son could be.  It was quite the relaxing day.  Have a great weekend!

Third Time is a Charm!

My husband won his 3rd golf amateur tournament in his flight this past Sunday!  The tournament was held at the Sterling Hills Golf Club on June 19.  He scored an 83 (+12), which is his best score to date (full leaderboard for his flight can be seen here).  With this win, he not only was promoted to the next flight (from Jones to Sarazen), but he also qualifies for the National Championship in September.  Great job honey!

Update:  Here is the write up from The Golf Channel and a picture of my hubby with his new plaque!

Sterling Hills Shootout Lives up to it’s Name

The Jones Flight also had a large field on Father’s Day, and several players had outstanding rounds. The top five players were all within three shots of each other, and it took an exceptional back nine for Deon Chen to pull off the victory. Chen continues to improve his game and looks forward to a Sarazen Flight promotion in his future, which may be soon after his fine score of 83 on Sunday. Chris Plaumer also played exceptionally well and managed a second place finish with his score of 84. Ex Wongsuwonloet posted a round of 85 to take third by himself. Yuri Pikover and Mark Millard tied for fourth, just missing the podium, with comparable rounds or 86 at Sterling Hills Golf Course.

My Husband Wins His First Amateur Golf Tournament!

My husband has been playing golf for more than a year now, and has just started amateur tournament play within the last few months. His hard work has finally paid off and he has won his first tournament!

Last Sunday (March 6), he played the OC Invitational at Tijeras Creek Golf Club through The Golf Channel. Check out this fantastic quote from the site. Great job honey!

OC Invitational Draws Record Field; Tijeras Creek Plays Difficult

Deon Chen, who had not broken 100 in three previous attempts on Tour, blitzed the Jones Flight by firing an unbelievable round of 83 on Sunday.

(My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  Here is a link on Yahoo! if you want to help.)

Golf Widow

My husband (swinging) at Mountain Falls Golf Course in Pahrump, Nevada

I know when my husband married me, he felt that he got the best of both worlds:  A woman that he loves, that also loves sports.

I love football.  I have mentioned it in a post in my old blog that my father was the one who turned me onto American football.  I have grown up with football on Sundays and Mondays, and we just had to accept it.  For many women, I imagine that would just cause one to despise the game even more.  For me, I fell deeply in love with the game.  After my dad took us to our first San Diego Chargers game (my favorite team), I knew I became a fan for life.

Another great thing my dad did was expose us to many sports, not just football.  My sister actually liked to participate in sports when she was younger, so my dad had the son he never had in the both of us, in different ways.  We have been to basketball games (remember when the Clippers were a San Diego team?), wrestling, roller derby, baseball…you name it, my dad wanted to take us to it.  He also watched everything and anything sports related on TV.  There was never a sport that I couldn’t sit through at least for a little bit.

So never in my wildest imaginings did I think that I would ever be a sports widow, but I am.

Golf is my husband’s mistress.  I have gone to watch him play, but I can only survive the front 9 holes before driving that cart drives me crazy and I need to go shopping or something.  He goes to the driving range on some days after work and plays on the weekend, but I also made him promise that golf should not interfere with our family time.  He has made good on that promise, selecting an early morning tee time so that he is home by 11am to spend time with me and Dominic, which frees up my mom to do what she wants to on the weekend (she watches our son while we’re at work during the week).

My husband plays in his first tournament this weekend.  I’m going to watch the first few holes, but since I can’t take our son, I have to make sure I get home so that my mom can go run errands before the weekend is over.  I’m excited for him because he has really improved for only playing for the better part of a year.

We all have our vices.  His is golf and that’s how it’s gotta be.  Now when is that sale at Coach again?
