#BlogItForward With Wayfair for Habitat For Humanity

#blogitforward

Holidays are a wonderful time to not only spend with family, but also to remember to be kind to others and give back to your community.  Giving back can take on many forms, big or small, and Wayfair, one of the largest online destinations for the home, is challenging bloggers to #BlogItForward and inspire each other to spread the word to do something positive this holiday season.  For every blogger that places the #BlogItFoward badge on their blog, Wayfair will donate $50 to Habitat For Humanity, helping to build homes for families in need.

Not only am I participating in Wayfair’s #BlogItForward for Habitat For Humanity, but I’ll also be participating in two other campaigns.  Check them out below, and I’d like to inspire my fellow bloggers and the San Diego Style Bloggers network to do the same!

TaSanni Kickstarter Campaign:

Help support TaSanni to create jobs that empower artisans in Africa

IMG_9483 - Copy

As I posted recently, TaSanni was one of the top three designers at Fashion Week San Diego 2015 (original post here).  With the success of their participation in FWSD 2015, there is much interest in their 2016 Spring Collection (I’m wearing one of their blouses in the picture above).

As you know, our mission is to contribute to the African economy through fashion, we believe that Africa can become a fashion manufacturing hub and this is just the beginning.
In order to employ more tailors we need to raise more capital. – TaSanni

I will be donating to TaSanni’s Kickstarter campaign.  If you would like to do the same, you would not only help these talented emerging designers, but you will also help develop the communities of these African tailors and small businesses TaSanni will be working with.

Voodoo Vixen Campaign 2016

I love wearing clothing by Voodoo Vixen, a UK based vintage inspired label, which “infuses retro, pin-up and rockabilly styles with classic silhouettes to flatter the modern woman” (all the dresses I’m wearing in the collage above are from Voodoo Vixen).  They will be having a sample sale in the Hollywood area, where 50% of their sales will benefit Pin-Ups For Vets.  I’ll be there to help support their cause, and to shop because you can save up to 70% of their retail prices!

“Share a Pair, Win a Pair” to Help Tommy John Support Testicular Cancer Awareness

Mustache Trunks

Every October, we celebrate awareness of women’s health, by highlighting education and support of those with breast cancer.  November (or “Movember” as it has come to be known) is the month where we highlight men’s health, where men (and women) sport moustaches to also support awareness and education of diseases such as prostate and testicular cancer (my husband has previously shown his support for “Movember”, see the post here).  To ensure we continue this important conversation, underwear brand Tommy John has teamed up with the Testicular Cancer Foundation (TCF) to raise awareness and provide education through their #SupportYourBalls campaign.

I attended the #VIPink Brunch in May in support of breast and ovarian health (post here), so I was more than happy to help support Tommy John + TCF with their campaign.  Here are a few ways you can help bring awareness of testicular cancer throughout the month of November:

  • Tommy John will give 5% of all sales coming from their limited edition “Mustache and Ball” collection (pictured above and below) to TCF
  • Tommy John also will contribute $10 to TCF for each purchase made by new customers who were referred by someone else (also, if you refer a friend, they get a $20 credit; when your referral makes a purchase, you then get a $20 credit!)

Additionally, Tommy John will have an Instagram contest called “Share a pair, win a pair”.  The contest runs until November 30, 2015 to start sharing your pairs to win!

Here’s my entry below, directly from my Instagram account, @any2ndnow.  Thank you Tommy John for asking me to help bring awareness to men’s health, and to also support your wonderful campaign with the Testicular Cancer Foundation!

#DropThemOff: Start The Conversation Early About Prescription Drug Abuse

14 (2)

As the mother of a six-year-old, I worry about the future.  I worry what will happen when my husband and I are not around to ensure Dominic is safe from anything and everything that could happen to him.  But as he gets older, I know we can’t always be there, so I need to make sure that we are having that open dialogue about being aware of his surroundings and other people.

I saw a short film recently called If Only, presented by The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation and Millennium Health as a part of the Drop Them Off campaign.  The film depicts the dangers of teens using and abusing prescription drugs they are sharing with each other that are either prescribed directly to them, or prescribed to their parents.

Movie Poster (2)

After seeing the short but poingant film, I realized that taking precautions are just the start.  Although the film is directed towards teens, it made me realize that I need have this conversation early.  I know my parents spoke to me about a few things when my sister and I were young, things that they wanted to caution us of what’s out there.  But in this new world of social media, easy access and fast information, Dominic could see something or hear something at any moment, without our ability to control or interpret the message.

Dominic knows that he takes his vitamins twice a day to ensure he stays healthy.  He also knows that occasionally he needs to take medication when he is ill or if he has an injury.  He also sees me and my husband take medications that are prescribed directly to us to “help” us in some way, even if he doesn’t know the exact reason why…but can I be sure he knows absolutely that taking medication from others is not safe?  What if someone tells him, “I take it all the time, it won’t harm you”?

Partnership-for-Drug-Free-Kids-RxAbuseAnEpidemic-492x1030

Prescription drugs are dangerously easy to acquire and share, which is why my husband and I take care to place medications out of our son’s reach and properly dispose of medications and medical supplies, such expired medicines or my mother’s insulin syringes.  But as Dominic gets older, I realize that we need to take even more care to properly lock up our prescription medications, as well as over-the-counter ones like analgesics and allergy medications.

As parents, we can start this dialogue early.  We need to remember to talk to our kids, and be open with them.  My husband and I see how much we influence Dominic in the things he says and his reactions to situations.  We know he’s listening, so we take the time to sit down and discuss situations immediately as they happen, then we check his understanding by asking him probing questions or have him interpret his understanding.  Children absorb information like sponges, and the more we arm them with the correct information, the better off they are in making more of the right decisions, as well as having the confidence to voice their concerns.

“Whether you’re a parent, relative, youth or community member, acknowledging the issue of prescription medication misuse and abuse is a crucial step to raising awareness and addressing the problem. Research shows that children who learn a lot about the risks of drugs from their parents are significantly less likely to use drugs than kids who don’t get this information at home.

SYF graphic

I love sharing opportunities like this on my blog.  I applied and received a grant for my first year in college, which helped me get books, supplies and helped me pay for tuition.  Fashion Valley Mall and Las Americas Premium Outlets are Simon Properties right here in San Diego, so if you know a student who is ready to take their education to the next level, have them apply!

This May, one student from every community that is home to a Simon property (www.simon.com) is eligible to receive a one-time scholarship award up to $1,500. In addition, 10 designated Simon, Mills and Premium Outlets centers will grant an Award of Excellence – a $2,500 scholarship that is renewable for up to three years.

Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarships are awarded through the Simon Youth Scholarships program and in partnership with local Simon properties. The application period for the 2015 Simon Youth Community Scholarship Program is December 1, 2014 – February 25, 2015.

Smoothieology: My Morning Work Week Routine

Good_Clean_Health_Smoothie-Worksheet1

I know I have mentioned this in my ClassPass post about how I’m trying to eat healthier in addition to incorporating exercise.  But now that I’ve shared how I’m changing up my snacking habits in the last post (additionally, I’m no longer having any sugary snacks and sodas during the week), I also wanted to share exactly how I make my morning breakfast using Smoothieology from the Good Clean Health blog.

I love this guide because takes the guess-work out of making a nutritious smoothie that fits me perfectly.  I’ve made several trials drinks, but this is the one that I have had every weekday morning since March 2014.  My version looks a bit green, but it really is quite delicious because I make it with selections from the “Optional” section to take the edge of the “rawness” of the smoothie.  Not only do I feel better, but I’ve even lost a little weight by cutting out my crazy fast-food morning routine.  Let me know how you are changing up your habits for a more healthier you!

  1. Base – 1/2 Can of Coconut Water
  2. Fat – 1 tbsp Almond Butter
  3. Fruits – 4-6 Strawberries & 1 Whole Banana
  4. Vegetables – 2 Handfuls of 50/50 Spring Mix or 1 Handful each of Spinach & Baby Kale (baby kale is better soluble than regular kale)
  5. Optional – 1 tbsp Flax Seed (superfood), 1/2 tsp Cinnamon (spice), 1 packet Stevia (sweetener)

San Diego's Premier Salons Partner with SEVEN Luxury Haircare to Give Back

shampoo conThe holidays should be a time of thinking of family and friends, and also about what you can do for others who are in need.  I’m happy to spread some good cheer through SEVEN luxury haircare and some premier San Diego salons as they team up to give back to our local community through Becky’s House.

This holiday season, SEVEN luxury haircare and premier salons in the San Diego area are teaming up to give back to the local community with a Season to Give campaign. For every SEVEN shampoo and conditioner set purchased, SEVEN will donate a full-sized haircare product to Becky’s House, an organization committed to protecting women and children from domestic violence by providing refuge and supportive services to achieve independence. The promotion will run through the end of the year. As we talked to various women’s organizations, we learned that one of the most common needs is full-sized haircare products. SEVEN along with our partner salons wanted to do something to give back and help these women look and feel their best as they work to achieve a violence-free life.

Below are the participating salons, including one I’ve been to recently (post here on Hairdrezzers on Fire).  I love sharing great causes like this because as a fashion/lifestyle blogger, sometimes it’s those little things like caring for yourself that can help you feel your best that count towards your overall well-being.  Cheers!

Introducing ClassPass San Diego!

ClassPass San Diego (1200x1200)

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know I’ve made some attempts to be healthier through lifestyle changes like The Whole30 (original post here, and additional posts here).  I’ve also been making a smoothie every single morning using the Smoothieology formula since March of this year.  Now, I’ve been trying to figure out how to incorporate an exercise routine into the mix, so I was very glad when the folks at ClassPass contacted me to try out their fitness start up service.  Basically, for $99 a month, you can take unlimited fitness classes at multiple participating studios, but are limited to three classes per studio per month (but once the next month starts, you can visit that studio again three more times).  They are currently available in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Seattle, Portland and now here in San Diego.  It’s a great alternative to a gym membership because it allows you to build a workout routine through a variety of different studios offering fitness of all types, such as zumba, yoga, pilates, indoor cycling and so much more.  Here’s a new and exciting addition to their services:  ClassPass Flex, which allows you to also choose unlimited classes in another participating city, which is great for when you are traveling and want to keep up your fitness routine.  Just remember that if you can’t make it to a class, you must cancel 24 hours in advance, or pay a $20 “no show” fee.

It was very easy to select a class once registered with ClassPass: all you have to do is choose the date you want, and all of the available classes and times show up under that day.  I’ve always wanted to try a Zumba class, and my first one was yesterday.  It was a Zumba/Zumba Toning Combo at ZFitness in the Sorrento Valley area.  It’s been awhile since I’ve had a workout like that, but now I’m excited to see what else it out there, and I’ll be sure to post my experiences during my first 30 days.

If you want to join ClassPass, you can request an invite on their site here, and also check out their FAQs if you have additional questions.  Also, follow them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, then tag #classpass, #classpassSD, #livingthesweatylife and participate in #PassTheHappy to share the love once you join!
