What Not to Share: Internet Safety

private_information_uknowkids

As a blogger, I share a lot of who I am online.  Although I love sharing who I am through music, fashion, hobbies, interests and travels, there are things that I keep private for the sake of myself and my family.  Sam, an Infrastructure Engineer from SingleHop (“a leading global provider of hosted IT infrastructure and Cloud computing“), asked me to think of things I would never share online.  From my list, he provided some sound advice, which I have provided below.  For more information regarding different types of secure server offerings, you can visit SingleHop’s site here.  Thank you Sam and all at SingleHop for inspiring me to write this post about online safety and allowing me to share it with the readers of Any Second Now!

Things to Avoid Sharing Online

Phone Number

This is a favorite data item requested by forms on the Internet. It is often an optional item, but sometimes it is a required field. Your phone number is another way to access other information about you, especially when sites use two-factor authentication to verify your identity. Reverse phone directories can show the name and address of someone with a particular phone number. It also can be sold to telemarketers so you’ll get those annoying phone calls about vinyl house siding during your dinner.

With the growth of smartphones, a phone number becomes as important as a social security number. With only your phone number, you’re able to purchase items through your phone and even access some of your financial accounts. Your phone number could be used to purchase products that are later returned for cash or credit.

Home Location/Address

Keeping the location of your home secure should always be a priority. In the hands of cyber criminals, your address can be used for identity theft and lead to big financial losses. You may think you are dealing with a secure site, but so much is stored on cloud hosting these days. Security breaches are not that uncommon and it is not worth the risk. If an address is required, but the site seems suspicious or unsecure, call to provide this information rather than typing it in.

Frequent Locations

Be wary when ‘checking-in’ to certain locations on a regular basis. This can include your home, your child’s school or favorite park, or even your place of work. If you provide a distinct pattern of behavior, it does not take very long for someone to be able to figure out where you will be at any given time.

That being said, sharing your location at all can be risky. This means you need to be careful when posting pictures online, as well as textual information. Make sure if you are posting information about school events for your children, or your workplace, that you make sure not to mention too many specifics. It would be so easy for someone to find your child solely from a photo of an awards ceremony which has their picture, school name, and full name listed on it.

Putting It Together

These examples supply a lot of useful information by themselves. By the same token, you should be wary when anyone you’re talking to online tries to work questions about such things into the conversation. What you really need to remember, though, is that when these bits and pieces are all out there in the cloud, they can be combined by someone to get a clearer picture of where you’re at and what your vulnerabilities are. Make sure that any sites you use have are encrypted and use secure servers to store their information, which will make them less susceptible to hacking.

Wine & Chocolate Tasting Event at the Beautiful Pantai Inn

Last Thursday, I was invited to attend a wonderful event for a great cause: Wine and chocolate tasting presented by R.A. Rauch & Associates with Eclipse Chocolate at the Pantai Inn in La Jolla, where the proceeds benefitted The Wounded Warrior Project.  Prior to the tasting, I was afforded a tour by sales manager Paula Ruthenberg, who showed me around the Bali inspired hotel grounds and in one of the gorgeous luxury villas.  I truly felt I was transported to another place because much of the décor, furnishings and carved art were imported directly from Bali.  What a lovely backdrop to the decadence of wine paired with chocolate by Eclipse Chocolate.  Thank you Kim Whittemore for the invite and everyone at Pantai Inn for a lovely evening!

My favorite wine & chocolate pairing of the night was the port dessert wine paired with the Chile Burnt Caramel (pictured above).  Separately, each had a tad more sweet and heat than I’m used to.  Together, they balanced each other out into this smooth taste sensation.

Weekend in Pictures: Bellus Academy Presents Come2gether

cometogether

Last Saturday, I was invited to attend an exciting and inspirational charity event presented by Bellus Academy (where I met up with quite a few San Diego Style Bloggers).  Come2gether was held at the Moniker Warehouse in Downtown San Diego and benefitted Beauty Changes Lives“a non-profit initiative designed to raise awareness of how careers in the hair, beauty and wellness industry transform lives both personally and professionally.”  It started off with the media portion, where bloggers, photographers and journalists could interview, photograph and visit with the artists who would be presenting that evening.  Bellus Academy president, Lynelle Lynch, and Cosmetology Educator, Manny SanMartin, chatted with us briefly about their career paths and the importance of the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation.  The keynote speaker was Stacey Broughton, a former Senior Art Director for the Vidal Sassoon Academy.  Special guests that night included Mike Varela, Nina Kovner, D.J. Muldoon, Douglas McCoy, Nicole Brown, Omar Antonio, Carrera Bailey and Diego Raviglione.  The main portion of this fun event included dynamic visual styling presentations set to music.  Thank you Christina of Alternative Strategies for inviting me to this fantastic event!

Give Thanks, With a Grateful Heart

Christmas Card 2013

The holiday season is always a wonderful time to give thanks for all the blessings you have.  I’m thankful every waking moment for a wonderful and loving family, from my immediate nuclear family to my extended family of friends and relatives, and also to my blogging and social media friends.  I’m blessed to be gainfully employed, which I wasn’t last year at this time.  I’m also blessed for myself and my family to be relatively healthy (although we do have history of diabetes and asthma).

Heather Thankful Blog Post 2013

Heather Von St. James is a mesothelioma cancer survivor, who was originally given only 15 months to live prior to her treatment.  She is now an 8 year survivor and has asked me and other bloggers to think about what we are thankful for, and to share her story to spread hope and awareness for others who are going through the same thing.  You can read her amazing story here.  Thank you Heather for reaching out to me, and I would like to wish you, your family, and everyone a wonderful Christmas!

Remembering Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela June 1990

“Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.” – Nelson Mandela

I took the above picture at The Hatch Shell on the Esplanade in Boston, back in June 23, 1990.  Only now am I realizing the importance of being there.  As a teen in the 80’s, the two songs below made me aware of who Nelson Mandela was, what he represented, and the protest against apartheid.

Just Take Good Care of The World: Donations to Help The Philippines

PHILIPPINES_TYPHOON_Washington_Post

The devastation of typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Philippines has hit close to home because it touched down close to my mother’s hometown on the Visayan Islands.  My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone feeling the effects of the typhoon. I’ve been looking for places to donate, and I will most likely go through Shelter Box again, as I did to help with Japan back in 2011 (original post here).

To assist through Shelter Box, click this link and fill out the form to donate.  The links below also have other ways you can help.

Let’s help take good care of the world.

I attended the “Bella Donna: A Makeover to Remember” on Tuesday at The Art Institute of California – San Diego (previous post here).  I met Tashina, who originally contacted me, and her colleagues who put the beauty event together.  Students and friends treated attendees to wonderful makeovers.  In addition to getting pampered like a princess, there was snacks, beverages and fantastic raffle prizes, with all proceeds to benefit one of my new favorite charities, The Princess Project.  It was a fun night and I want to thank Tashina for informing me about the event!

Yesterday, I met Jenna and Vicky, two lovely ladies from The Princess Project’s San Diego team at the “Bella Donna: A Makeover to Remember” event.  They told me about a spectatular soiree happening next Thursday at the Hotel Palomar’s SummerSalt Rooftop Pool & Lounge.  It’s their 5th Annual Princess Project Runway Event and will feature future fashion stars from FIDM competing in a live prom dress draping competition.  Enjoy a fabulous affair that benefits a fashionable and worthy cause on March 14 in beautiful Downtown San Diego.  Cheers!

A Special Charity Event by The Art Institute of California-San Diego: "Bella Donna: A Makeover to Remember" on March 5, 2013

event poster

On Tuesday March 5, 2013 from 4pm to 7pm, students from The Art Institute of California-San Diego will be hosting a very special event called “Bella Donna: A Makeover to Remember”.  Pamper yourself for an evening, all while helping out a great cause!

During the event we will be offering participants a day of pampering where all attendees will be greeted with beverage and light snacks, and will be getting their hair, nails, and make up done ending with a  fun photo booth inspired shoot. Throughout the event, guests can relax and enjoy the lounge-type atmosphere awaiting their turns to actually sit down and have a one on one session at each station. Tips, tutorials and trials are all just part of the fun that “Bella Donna” will bring to attendees.  Also, the event will be organizing a raffle with great prizes to raise money for a charity; “The Princess Project”.

The charity of choice “The Princess Project” is a charity that promotes self-confidence and individual beauty by providing free prom dresses and accessories to high schools girls who can’t afford them.  Most of their effort has been done though sponsors, volunteers, and support of others. So far The Princess Project has helped over 20,000 teens throughout the states with the help of over 2,000 volunteers. For the event everyone is welcomed to participate in the raffle of fun gifts and prizes. All of the proceeds will be donated to: “The Princess Project”.
