How I Rock Vintage

(This was originally a guest post for the blog Mrs. Bossa Does The Do, but I wanted to repost it here on my blog in anticipation of a new feature that I will post about this week.  I want to thank Mrs. Bossa again for the opportunity to post the original back on July 11, 2011.)

Firstly, I would like to thank Mrs. Bossa for allowing me the chance to do a guest post on her fantastic blog!  This is something that I have been working on for awhile, so what better way to share than as my first guest post.  I wanted to honor her love of vintage by expressing my love of something similar.

AN ODE TO THE ROCK T-SHIRT

With so many t-shirts out there bearing some kind of “saying”, the rock t-shirt has received a confusing wrap. Are they are or they not fashionable? It depends on who you ask, and I personally love them. I have bought a t-shirt from every concert I’ve been to since I was 14.  My first two were Duran Duran in 1984 and Depeche Mode in 1985.  Both still fit and now have that “worn in” feel that clothing companies can only hope to emmulate.

I’m heavily influenced by 80’s alternative, which sneaks its way into my outfits in the form of a spiked belt, bracelet or rock t-shirt.  Designers like Vivienne Westwood and Stephen Sprouse have infused punk into their lines, and that’s what I love to do with my own wardrobe.  They basically took the t-shirt and made it into a fashion statement.  One of my favorite newer designers, Idil Vice, has created an entire line of clothing that takes the rock t-shirt to a whole new level by placing those rock and punk images on other pieces of clothing like dresses and skirts (like the one below).

The rock t-shirt not only showcases my musical tastes, but it allows me to have greater expression.  I can wear them either completely casual, all the way to glammed up.  They become conversation pieces and can actually bond people.  When I went to a recent concert by OMD, I wore a Joy Division shirt.  There were three other people wearing the same shirt, and we all gave each other a knowing nod, understanding why we were wearing the shirts.  I received several compliments, including an acknowledgement from OMD’s lead singer, Andy McCluskey (he said “Look at you in your Joy Division shirt!”).  Wearing the “right” rock t-shirt can say “I am a connoisseur of music” without you having to say a word.

(Just to give you a bit of history, OMD toured with Joy Division back in the very early 80’s.  When the lead singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide back in 1982, OMD wrote a song in his honor.  Joy Division later changed their name to New Order).

I came across this article from Cleveland.com called “Vintage rock T-shirts not only make a fashion statement but make a good investment, too“.  Looks like I’m not the only one with a love of the rock tee.  People are not only snapping up shirts from bands like The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, but even the random Styx or odd REO Speedwagon shirts seem to be a hit.  The article explains that vintage and current rock t-shirts are not just fashionable, but can bring in some cash if you are so inclined to give them up.  True vintage t-shirts have increased in value, especially on auction sites such as eBay, fetching up to $1000!  But beware of the wannabes being sold by sites who mass produce them and pawn them off as “vintage”.

“You can always tell by the tags: The originals have much smaller tags and if the tag isn’t as worn as the shirt, you’re probably buying a fake.” – Erica Easley, author of the rock shirt history, “Rock Tease.”

Who knew that my vintage concert t-shirts that I spent $15 on at the most back in 1985, could be worth so much?   Looks like I have a gold-mine in my closet!

How Do You Feel About the Flatform?

My first pair of flatforms were slides from a few years ago by Steve Madden.  They were Asian inspired and were probably meant to be modeled after the Japanese geta shoes.  The wedge heel was basically an inverted trapezoid: wider at the top and angled smaller towards the bottom (I wish I had a picture).  While the concept worked visually and when I first walked in them at the store, walking in them for any prolonged period of time proved very awkward due to being off-balance.  Since them, I basically stayed away from the flatform, even as they gained popularity over the past year.

I recently bought a pair because my friend, Tanya, bought a pair from Urban Outfitters and they looked adorable on her (unfortunately, I no longer see the pair she bought online).  This is what prompted me to finally purchase the pair pictured above from Must Have Shoes.  My reasons for buying them were for functionality as well as style for my European vacation (I’m hesitant to go sight-seeing in anything taller than a moderate heel).

I chose the pair by Nicole called “Gutsy” because of the snake pattern and espadrille wedge.  They looked a bit quirky and funky, but still felt light and perfect for summer.  After receiving them, I was a bit apprehensive about the shape, thickness of the heel and wondered what I would wear them with, how I would style them, but I was mostly concerned about how comfortable they would be.

Surprisingly enough, they became quite comfortable after I broke them in and they look cute with any style of jean, skirt/dress or short.  They don’t look chunky at all, and just feel like very tall flats.  You can’t see them, but this pair has a removable ankle strap, which I am actually keeping on to prevent them from flopping off.  All in all, I’m happy with this particular pair and if so inclined, I may buy a pair while out in Europe (I’ll be sure to put up any outfit posts as I wear them).  What do you think of the flatform?

(Note: I finally got one, just like the black one pictured above, except in Electric Purple. It’s even more amazing up close and personal!)

Heavy Metal

Rebecca Minkoff Flowerstud and Double Wrap Zip bracelets

Looks like my love for metal and spikes are definitely on trend this year, which means there is no shortage of my favorite kinds of studded bracelets, shoes, purses and belts available everywhere.  I’ve included items that I already own, mixed in with some that I recently purchased.  I’ll definitely be on the look out for more when I travel to London and Paris in August to add to my heavy metal accessory collection.

Nails Did & Done

Dominatrix (brand unknown); Ring set, a gift from my niece

There are times where I go through long dry spells where I’m just too lazy to get a manicure, either at home or at the salon.  Since my last mani-pedi with my niece for Mother’s Day (first picture above), I’ve overcome my manicure embargo after I purchased an adorable travel manicure set I found at CVS.  Coincidentally, I also discovered they had a great beauty sale, showcasing a selection of polishes by Sally Hansen and Wet N Wild on the cheap, with prices ranging from $.99 to $2.99.  I stocked up on quite a few colors (not all are pictured here), which means I can get my nails “did” more often!

What's In a Name – The Honeyroom

My father bought my sister and I gold necklaces and bracelets personalized with our names back when we were five and eight years old (respectively), so I feel that I was on the “Carrie” necklace trend long before it started with “Sex and the City”.  We both have since lost or misplaced those precious pieces, so I’ve been trying to find a retail or online store that will sell them at a reasonable price.

I discovered a new follower on Twitter called  The Honeyroom a couple of months ago and checked out their site, which is a fashion accessory online store. Their products are inspired by celebrity, runway, vintage and retro trends in fashion.  After looking through their vast collection of sunglasses, scarves, hats, and handbags, my interest was drawn to their jewelry because of their “Nameplate Necklaces” section.  With an awesome discount I received when I followed them back on Twitter, I bought myself and two of my girlfriends personalized nameplate necklaces (we are very much SATC fans, but I got the necklaces in silver rather than gold).  In addition to the personalized “Carrie” style necklace, they have a variety of nameplate necklaces to order from, including your Twitter username (mine below is in black).

I know there are many great choices out there for nameplate necklaces.  But if you’re on a budget like me, I think the prices of the one’s found on The Honeyroom are fantastic.  The package arrived fairly quickly (within 2.5 weeks), and I was very happy with the quality of the necklaces.  Additionally, the folks who run the site are very responsive if you have any questions (thank you Andrea!).  If you follow The Honeyroom on Twitter or Facebook, you could get additional discounts, like the 20% off I received from signing up with Twitter, and they also have an affiliate program (see my side bar).  Get to know The Honeyroom and happy shopping!

(Note:  This is simply a review of the site, conducted solely at my discretion.  I did not receive any compensation, product or discounts when I ordered the product from this site.)

Rebecca Minkoff West Coast Sample Sale!

If you are a fan of Rebecca Minkoff like I am, the West Coast sample sale will be in full force in both LA and San Francisco this coming weekend.  I won’t be able to go this time due to family obligations, but I will be there in spirit with all my fellow Minkettes.  Have fun and happy shopping!

All I Ever Wanted: Dior's "Secret Garden – Versailles"

I absolutely love it when my worlds collide in such a fabulous way.  I subscribe to email updates from many fashion lines, and one of them is Dior.  I hope to one day own a Lady Dior purse of my own, and seeing this clip just makes me want one even more: Beautiful models Daria Strokous, Melissa Stasiuk and Xiao Wen Ju sashay among equally stunning interior and exterior shots set to none other than Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence”.  Click here or on the picture to view the video. Veuillez apprécier la vidéo, merci!

(Note: Apparently there is also a new Depeche Mode album due in November 2012 and tour in the works for 2013, according to David Gahan here.  Hopefully all goes well and they come back to San Diego!)

Swearing

My first Wendy Brandes purchase was the asterisk ring (seen here first), which I wear practically everyday because it is quite adorable.  I finally bought the rings that I have had my eye on since I was introduced to Wendy’s blog and jewelry line: the WendyB swear rings.  I first saw them on B at Beautifully Invisible and fell in love.  This set of rings are show stoppers and conversation pieces.  After I posted a picture of them on Instagram, I went to a family party and those who follow my blog grabbed my hand when I arrived, just to see them in person.

As with the asterisk ring, the quality is amazing, and they are so much lighter than they appear.  I was asked previously if the set was a “bar ring”.  These rings are not attached and can be worn individually.  Click here for for the set I bought in silver, or click here for the gold-plated version.  Both styles are adjustable, so one size will fit most hands.  Although you may find other versions of her designs out there (see her post on the subject here), you will not find anything like size and quality of Wendy’s originals.  I swear!

(Edited on May 14, 2012 to add the picture above, after a manicure.  On Mother’s Day, I finished the last book of the Fifty Shades trilogy and my nail color for my mani-pedi was called Dominiatrix.  I just had to wear the rings!)

Spike It

Other than the music, something that I have carried through from the 80’s are the appearance of spikes in my wardrobe in the form of a bracelet or belt.  My choice of metal is usually the pyramid spike, but I’m leaning towards the cone-shaped spike more and more these days.  I then discovered these ever so sexy open-toe “Lorissa” pumps from Sam Edelman, which are sprinkled with cone-shaped spikes and bejeweled with gems.  Since yesterday was my birthday, I bought a pair at Bloomingdale’s as a present to myself (black is no longer available, but Endless still has them here).  Our son was a bit concerned that my new shoes may hurt, but I assured him that they were only for decorative purposes and will not hurt anyone.  My niece wasn’t afraid at all and walked around the house for a good 15 minutes.  I think I know who’s going to be raiding my closet in the next few years!
