Room For Squares

Magazines for your kids to learn about the world.

I had planned on wearing this outfit on Plaidurday.  But after a couple of minor catastrophes at work (including a sink-hole right outside our office), the upper management deemed it a jeans day the following day.  So I saved my tartan terrific dress for a regular business casual day.  Oh, and I love these boots.  They make any outfit edgy.

Outfit – Candies dress; Mossimo sheer mock turtleneck; H&M cardigan; Breckelle’s boots (ModCloth); Target tights; Coach sunnies; Wendy Brandes ring; Rebecca Minkoff pouch

It’s Beginning to Look Like Sweater Weather

It’s finally starting to get cool enough to wear sweaters and boots.  I’m very excited because I just got a new pair of boots that I’ll be sporting in future posts.  In the meantime, I’ve paired these boots that I’ve worn before in a few outfit posts with one of my new favorite sweaters that I bought in Palm Springs.  I love the stripes, the pockets, and how the boxy cut makes the sweater drape just so.

Old Print, New Tricks

I’ve worn this shirt before during my “40 for 40” remix.  This is also the outfit I wore when I went to dinner with the girls for Restaurant Week.  I paired the shirt with new pants that I almost didn’t pick up because of the odd color: dark green.  It’s not even a deep emerald or forest green.  But I liked that they are not black, which would force me to create new combinations.  It’s also a great color for fall.

It’s been a busy concert month already!  Not only did I get to see Erasure last week, but on Sunday, my sister and I saw OMD again but at Humphrey’s by the Bay.  Last night, I saw Howard Jones in concert at 4th & B , which was another fun night with Janice (and we met up with my friend, Merrick).  I’ll be sure to include pictures of what I wore along with pictures of the show for an upcoming concert review.  Hooray for more 80’s concerts!

Today is Plaidurday!

I was invited last week on Facebook by Bella of The Citizen Rosebud to join Plaidurday, which is today.  To commemorate the event, of course I will be wearing plaid (outfit post to come).  No matter how many trends come and go, I will always return to two favorite patterns: stripes and plaids.  Here I am, wearing the classic pattern, in a few different incarnations (click on the pictures for the original posts).  Happy Plaidurday and have a great weekend!

Blocked in Blue

I usually take my outfit pictures right when I get home from work.  There are days where my outfits last the day, but there are some days where I wish I could quickly through some steam.  This was basically the only shot where my clothes didn’t look so wrinkled.  I really wanted to capture the shoes that I bought a few weeks ago in Las Vegas and the pretty blouse I bought to bring out the blue in them.  I only realized later that the grey of my purse really tied everything together, bringing out the true color blocking of the shoes.

Modern Vintage

It’s been awhile since I took pictures in my usual picture spot because there was a car parked in front of it.  Also, I’ve been feeling lazy lately.  I have had a few picture worthy outfits, just not enough energy to make it happen.  So today, I thought I would capture pictures of the other kimono jacket I bought recently.  I got this lovely number at Cotton On.  I love it because of the sheer material and the way it drapes in the back.  I wore with a plain black tank top, jeans, and simple shoes, but dressed it up with my cameo pendant/pin.  I took a close up by request of the beautiful Christine of the blog Un-Stitched.  She asked that I take a close up of some of some of my jewelry, and I thought it was fitting to take one of my vintage cameo, since she is so great at finding great buys and vintage items, creating sophisticated and feminine outfits.

Dee Lite Before the Dark

Cheap prices on hot titles like these every day.

I took these pictures just before a huge blackout hit all of San Diego that supposedly originated in Arizona and stretched all the way to Orange County.  My husband and I were at a company sponsored fundraiser at the Acapulco Mexican Restaurant & Cantina in beautiful Old Town San Diego, when the waiters came out to us and said that their power went out.  We then realized that the power was out everywhere after my mom called us.

Part of the reason I originally wanted to take pictures there was because one of my co-workers said that I reminded him Dee Lite from the “Groove is in the Heart” video in this dress.  I love all of the outfits in the video, in all of her psychedelic 60’s glory!

A Different Shade of Green

My neighbor did a good and bad thing:  she finally trimmed her overflowing plants and trees, but it changed my easy access outfit photo backdrop!  I had to move to the other side, which is more in our driveway.  There were still workers doing things in her yard, so I didn’t want to shoot any pictures while they were cleaning up.  Once they finish the work, I think I can still take photos there, but those pretty flowers won’t be a part of the shot any longer.  One thing I can guarantee is that Dominic will definitely be a part of my outfit posts, which isn’t so bad, is it?

See You

I’m wearing my new specs.  I know you can’t really see them all that well, so I’ll make sure to take a better close up of them in future posts.  In the meantime, I’m also wearing one of my new favorite kimono style sheer jackets.  It’s perfect for these summer days that go between semi-hot and nearly scorching (relatively speaking of course).

Releasing My Inner Sporty Spice

With the start of football season just around the corner and our first pre-season game out of the way, I’m anxious to get out and see a game again.  As I put on one of my favorite vintage sports tees, I thought about what I see all the time at sporting events:  women wearing crazy stiletto heels, barely there clothing in all of their team’s glory and purses so large they need their own seat.  With nose-bleed seats that can be nearly 100 feet up and no elevator to help with the climb, I wonder why women dress like they’re going to a night club rather than like they are watching a (plug-in appropriate sport) game.

I think it’s best to channel Mel C (Sporty Spice) by looking smart, sporty and comfy because so many crazy things can happen at any given sporting event.  Back in 2008, my husband and I went two football games outside of San Diego:  The International Series game with the San Diego Chargers vs the New Orleans Saints, and then to a Pittsburgh Steelers home game because they were playing also my Chargers.  I was pregnant at the time for both games.

At the Pittsburgh game, we were in the 5th to the last row near the top of the stadium.  Heinz Field is an open stadium and the game was in November, so you can imagine how cold it was!  I was in lots of layers and my wellies to ensure warmth and dry feet. About an hour into the game, angry words were exchanged between two fans, and a scuffle happened right behind me.  My husband swept me up and we quickly shifted seats a few rows down until things calmed down.  Security came over and ended the argument.  Later we found out that it was over spilt beer.

Although both were cold weather games and more than likely everyone was wearing something comfortable and warm, I can’t say the same for the games out here in sunny San Diego.  At a recent Padres game, I overheard an older woman complain about how much her feet hurt, asking her husband to slow down.  When I turned around, she was wearing 3-inch spiked heels, a printed capri pant suit and hauling a beautiful (but incredibly large) designer purse.  Her husband wasn’t too sympathetic to her situation.

Here is how I wear my favorite sports gear to show support for my team.  I changed my shoes a bit to show how I wear it to the office, and how I wear it when I go to an actual game or even a sports bar.

1.  A lightweight jacket or sweater – Games that go from the afternoon into the night can turn cold in a heartbeat.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.

2.  A piece of clothing that represents your favorite team – I like to do so in the form of a shirt or hat.  Usually when it’s a shirt, it’s either a jersey or vintage tee.  The one pictured above is one I bought on eBay.  It’s my favorite.

3.  Shorts, jeans or pants – It is very difficult to sit lady-like in a seat at a sports arena or stadium, unless you are in a suite or press box.  If you sit in the regular seats with the regular folk like me, it’s best to wear some kind of pants or shorts because of all of the standing, sitting and climbing that can occur throughout the game.  Wear skirts at your own risk (think about the trip UP when climbing stairs).

4.  A flat shoe or a wedge – To me, heels and sports events do not mix.  I will almost always wear flats, usually some kind of sneaker.  But if I do wear a heel, it will be a wedge.

5.  A cross-body bag – No matter how pretty or modern the stadium or arena, accidents will happen at a sporting event.  You take the life of your purse into your own hands by placing it under your seat or in the seat next to you.  It’s best to take just your essentials and wear a purse that can be easily slung across your body.  This will free up your hands to carry your child, food and a couple of drinks if needed.

6. Sunglasses & sunblock – Unless your event is strictly indoors, take a pair of sunglasses for sporting events that happen during the day.  It’s tough to be outside for that long, and your eyes can take a beating.  Also remember sunblock.  The back of your neck will thank you for it!
