A New Indie Shopping Experience: Young Republic

When I think of the term “Indie”, it always reminds me of new and interesting bands or music that is off the beaten path.  Through my own fashion journey, I’ve also discovered indie label designers and artists.  To add to this indie designer theme I seem to be on this week, I was recently asked to check out a new shopping site called Young Republic.  This site was established on August 27th, 2012 in Sydney, Australia by Marianne Sea and Andrew Yang and features over 750 independent international designers.  I’ll have to say that I was very impressed by the variety this site has to offer.  I found plenty of jewelry, clothing and accessories that I would like for myself, but also for my whole family and even for my home.  The following are pictures are just a tiny sampling of the hundreds of fantastic finds on Young Republic.  I chose two images from the “Home+Life” section, and two designers that became instant favorites: designhype and LeMuse.  Support independent designers by visiting Young Republic!

Orange Clock by Objectify Homeware

Panda iPhone Case by Hooby Groovy (fits 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S)

Deep Blue felted wool Bell muse coat by LeMuse

Black double collar Flower Muse felted wool coat with viscose lining by LeMuse (this coat is stunning!)

NYC Metro Cuff in cyan by designhype

London Tube Cuff in black by designhype (I have this one; outfit post to come!)

This is their new Christmas Collection 2012 (click on the link on the left or the picture). I’ll have one of everything please!

Well Covered

A couple of weekends ago, my family and I attended an 80th birthday party for another great-aunt, Remedios Posadas Madrid (my cousin Regi’s mother).  It was a semi-formal daytime event at a beautiful location: The Skyline Room at the Admiral Kidd Catering and Conference Center.  I kept my look very simple by wearing a lace babydoll dress, a light blazer and printed clutch.  Although I wore all black, I made sure that the blacks had texture: my tights had a different pattern than my dress, and my shoes were velvet with glitter.  I’m glad I kept it simple, because I wanted to make sure that my fantastic clutch really stood out.  I included a couple of other pictures: one with my handsome hubby and one of our son.  We had a great time at this lunchtime affair, especially with that gorgeous San Diego skyline in view.

Outfit – H&M blazer; Forever 21 dress (last seen here); Poetic License shoes; Hanes argyle textured tights; American Apparel clutch; Clutched & Covered clutch cover; Origami Owl necklace; Coach sunnies; Juicy Couture ring; iSee glasses from GlassesUSA

On Deon – Trevero hat; Van Husen tie; Michael Kors shirt; Old Navy pants; Steve Madden shoes

On Dominic – US Polo Association sweater; H&M pants & Northside high tops (both unseen)

Blog Love & Support: Clutched & Covered

Now that I have been blogging for two years, I’ve come to know several bloggers, some who appear in my blog roll.  A few of these bloggers have forged businesses, and I try to support them when I can.  One of my favorite bloggers, Rocquelle of Consider Me Lovely, has a wonderful Etsy shop called Clutched & Covered.  I love the idea of refreshing the clutch purses you have in your closet and extending their versatility with covers!  I decided to cover my American Apparel clutch because it was the most plain (here is an example of how it looks from a previous outfit posts here and here).  Rocquelle has so many cute styles in her Etsy shop, but I finally settled on purchasing the leopard print.  Not only is it beautifully made and fit my American Apparel clutch perfectly, but I discovered that it also fit a new clutch that I just got from The Limited!  I love how the orange of the envelope flap just pops against the leopard print.  I also adore the beautiful thank you note from Rocquelle (and yes my dear, I will be rocking this cover at the next concert I attend!).  I actually styled this cover with an outfit that I wore to a party, and I will post that outfit soon.  If you want to revamp the clutches in your closet and give them some new life, why not pay Clutched & Covered a visit!

Winner of the Color Block Wristlet Clutch From The Limited!

Happy Black Friday to everyone, and I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving!  A winner has been selected for the color block wristlet clutch c/o The Limited: Please help me congratulate Tanya (she was already contacted and received the wallet prior to this post).  Congratulations Tanya and enjoy!

Thanks to everyone who participated, and thank you for following Any Second Now!

FTC Disclosure: The winner of the color block wristlet clutch c/o The Limited was chosen at random using Math Goodies.  As stated in the initial post, I received compensation as a part of the invitiation to the grand opening event.  Although I did receive compensation, the opinions and all photographs in this post and the original post are strictly my own.

Wanted: The InnoTab 2S

Last year, I reviewed the InnoTab learning tablet from VTech Toys because we knew how much my son loved my sister’s iPad (see review here).  After talking it over with his grandma, she bought it for him for his birthday this year.  Dominic adores his InnoTab and takes it most everywhere.  These are pictures of him with it at a restaurant (above), and at a party (below).

Dominic asked for my headphones so he could concentrate on playing his Cars 2 game (his exact words were “I can’t hear my game, it’s too loud in here!”).

According to Dominic, this is a golf ball, a golf club, and a hole on the golf course.  Do I sense a future career?

Earlier this month, Dominic came to me and said, “Mama, I want the new InnoTab.  It has a camera now!”  Initially, we didn’t think that Dominic wanted the camera.  But after he’s been playing with my Acer Iconia, he has come to love the camera feature.  After seeing the new commercials and checking out the official site, I think we will be getting the new InnoTab 2S for him for Christmas.  Not only does it have a photo and video camera that flips front to back, but it is also Wi-Fi capable, allowing secure downloads.  This new version is $99, which is $20 more than the earlier version.  At least the price point is much better than any regular tablet on the market.  Ah, to have a tech savvy three-year old.  Since Black Friday is coming up, I think I know what I need to shop for!

As this posts, my husband, son and I will be en route to Las Vegas to be with his side of the family, so I wanted wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow!

My Hubby Supports Movember!

I love this picture of my husband and my cousin, Leonard.  Deon’s hat and moustache along with Leonard’s bow-tie make me feel like they walked out of Boardwalk Empire!  But my hubby has a moustache for a very important reason: it’s to show his support for a movement called Movember, and it’s to promote more awareness surrounding men’s health.  To find out more about the movement and how you can participate, go to Movember.com to choose your region and register.

Until the End of the World

I’ve always admired designs by Vivienne Westwood from afar but never indulged until recently.  I love that her style was born out of the punk era, so her fashion seems to speak to me musically (I always include a little punk or goth into my wardrobe).  It was my intention to visit her shop, World’s End, while I was in London this past August.  Due to time constraints, we never got to do it.  Instead, this sweater was my first ever purchase from Vivienne Westwood, and I snapped it up when I saw it on sale on Zappos.  It’s from the Anglomania line and the crazy threads woven through the cable of the chunky knit gives it that punk feel.  I can let them dangle or cinch them up and tie them for the asymmetrical look.  My favorite part is the safety-pin closure.  I absolutely love this sweater!

Outfit – Vivienne Westwood Anglomania chunky knit sweater in chartreuse; Old Navy skinny cargos; H&M top; Gunmetal shoes; Wendy Brandes ring; Necklace gift from my sister; Rebecca Minkoff MAC purse; iSee glasses from GlassesUSA

Whole30: Results & Final Thoughts

I finished my Whole30 month on October 31st!  (For those of you who are unfamiliar with the program and when I started, please see my original post here.)  Through the Whole30 experience, I learned that what I ate directly correlated to why my body was the way it was.  When I cut out all of the desserts that I was snacking on like cookies, donuts, ice-cream sandwiches, danishes and mini-pies, I really did notice a difference by the second week in how much my bloating was a result of simply eating all of that sugar.  Then I realized just how much sugar was in my diet that wasn’t in the form of a dessert, which included drinks like flavoured creams in my coffee, soda, fruit punches, and even in places that you wouldn’t suspect like soups and sauces.

Since the end of my 30 day run, I still find myself eating the same way that I had been during the Whole30, but I added just a bit of what I was missing like dairy and grains.  Even if I feel like I can have a day where I eat a couple of slices of pizza, I still keep my diet fairly the same as I did on the Whole30.  I stopped drinking soda completely because I cannot stand the taste any longer, and I still drink my tea and coffee black, without sugar or cream.  I did have a little chocolate and a couple of cookies because I wanted just a little bit of what I have missed, but I find that I’m now turning to my favorite frozen banana dessert (post with recipe here), fresh fruit and cashews rather than anything sugary.  Part of the program calls for really thinking about why you are eating:  Is it to satisfy a craving, or are you really hungry?  If I was hungry, then I remembered this statement:  If you feel you are truly hungry, can you eat a whole meal that includes fish and broccoli?  If you can eat an entire meal, then you are truly hungry and you should eat a meal.  If you aren’t, then either drink water or have a snack.  It was during these times that I did want to eat that I turned to cashews, dried and fresh fruit or even just a glass of water or fresh juice.  As I post this, I’m reading the section from the site called “Ride Your Own Bike“, which states that you can always hop back on to another Whole30 program to reset yourself if you feel you have really begun to go down that path of eating poorly again.

To show the physical results of being on the Whole30 program, I included two deceptive pictures, which look quite the same at first glance.  The picture on the left is from a previous outfit post.  The secret about the pictures in that outfit post is that I had to retake some of the shots a few times because I needed to reposition myself to avoid an unflattering angle.  I’m also wearing a slip that is similar to Spanks to help smooth out areas of my body that I felt needed a little help and I used the purse to hide bulges in my mid-section.

In the new picture on the right, I am wearing the same dress…and that’s pretty much it.  No help from any special undergarments and no need to stand a certain way, or use an accessory to hide my mid-section.  I lost a total of six pounds on the Whole30, my face looks a lot slimmer and I lost a dress size because I was no longer bloated.  I fit back in things that I still had in my closet prior to my pregnancy four years ago, and even a few things that I had just bought last year!

It may seem very “cult-ish” when talking about the Whole30 as a program and the guidance that it offers.  But really, it all comes down to what you believe you need in our life.  When Vahni from Grit & Glamour mentioned that a group was going to start the Whole30 program at the beginning of October, I felt that I needed it to reset my system.  Later, it actually helped me get through a bit of a setback:  In the middle of my Whole30 challenge, I lost my job.  Usually when I’m faced with adversity, I turn to food for comfort.  Since I was in the midst of the Whole30 program, I used as a way to challenge myself and not turn to food, but rather channel my energy into cleaning my home, spending oodles of time with my son and husband, and search for a new job (hopefully, I will be closer to finding one when this posts).

If you have tried everything you could to diet or eat healthier but just coudn’t figure a way to do it, you should try the Whole30.  Who knows?  You may even turn it into a Whole60, Whole90 or your whole life.  It truly is a great way to start understanding why you eat the way you do, and how it directly affects your body.  After the Whole30, you can either choose to continue, or go back to your former ways.  Either way, it will change your life.  It changed mine.

Images of Halloween 2012

I know it’s a couple of weeks after the fact, but here are just a few images of our Halloween celebration this year.  We went back to the Pumpkin Station at Plaza Bonita Mall on October 29th to use up the rest of the ride tickets (original post here).  Dominic decided that he wanted to go down the Giant Slide rather than the smaller one he went down before.  He did really well and had so much fun that he went back ten times.  Conversely, he then went on a boat ride that started off fun, then quickly turned boring after the tenth go-around (I love the look on his face towards the end of the ride).

The next day, Dominic got the chance to gut his first pumpkin, with the help of daddy and cousin Mei-Lin.  He was quite grossed out by the squishiness of the innards, but Mei-Lin had no problem with digging right in!  Deon and I carved the pumpkin into its final Jack-O-Lantern state, and it turned out pretty well!

Also, as mentioned in a previous post, we went with the Batman theme for our Halloween costumes this year: I was Catwoman, Dominic was Batman and my husband was The Joker.  I did my husband’s make-up, and he received tons of compliments at work and on Halloween.  He also received requests for pictures from visiting trick-or-treaters!  My sister and her family also came over for the trick-or-treat portion of the evening, and they dressed as Adventure Time characters.  As predicted, the fun lasted as long as the candy supply.  Hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!

WHY SO SERIOUS?!

The Dark Knight and two of his favorite villains.

What time is it? Adventure Time!

Warm Leatherette

The weather is starting to cool off, but I can still get away with wearing some sleeveless clothing now, that I know I can layer later.  I love these studded boots, and have been figuring out ways to always incorporate them into my wardrobe.  When I got this soft furry vest from Bloomingdale’s, I couldn’t wait to pair them up with these boots.  The cool colors and softness of the vest together with the leather and studs of the boots make me feel like a rock star (Warm Leatherette by The Normal was playing in my head while posing for these shots).

Outfit – Aqua faux fur vest; H&M Jeans; Steve Madden “Fraankie” boots; Rebecca Minkoff purse; Michael Kors watch; Coach sunnies; Personalized leather cuff from the San Diego County Fair; Unknown brand studded silver bracelet; Wendy Brandes ring; Cross necklace from Southwark Cathedral in London
