I’d Rather Be Sleeping: A Guide to a Good Night’s Rest From Casper

Casper_B2

This weekend was quite crazy!  I had my niece over to hang out with me and my son.  After a fun day at the New Children’s Museum (post to come soon), grabbing some ice cream before dinner, followed by a raucous couple hours of playtime, sleep came upon us quite quickly, although very late.  Most nights, it’s hard for me to get to sleep right away, mainly because I’m so worked up from the activities of the day that it takes me awhile to wind down, especially if I blog late into the night.  When I was younger, I used to put on a favorite record before sleeping.  Lately, I put on a favorite movie rather than regular TV or the news because if I know the movie really well, there’s nothing to anticipate and I’ll usually fall asleep during the opening credits.

The folks at Casper, creators of “The Perfect Mattress” have created a wonderful graphic guide below for Any Second Now readers on how to get a great night’s sleep, which I could use right now!

Got any tips of your own?  Share them in the comments!

A Fun Night Out: The Murder Mystery Company

2016-02-07 100519 - Copy

murder-at-the-masquerade-300 (1)

I’m always looking for and thinking of fun things to do with my friends and family that are bit out of the normal dinner or amusement park.  I recently had the opportunity to experience a night out with The Murder Mystery Company at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Downtown San Diego.  I had always heard about The Murder Mystery Company, but didn’t truly understand what exactly what it was about.  So I thought it would be a fun way to celebrate a date night out for my husband’s birthday!  The Murder Mystery Company hosts several events throughout San Diego and there are different themes.  The event we attended was “Midnight at the Masquerade” where guests are encouraged to don attire appropriate for the theme:

The rustle of silks and feathers under muted conversation was probably the last thing heard by the tragically and unexpectedly deceased at the Annual Billionaires Club Masquerade Ball. With a mystery under each feathery façade, unmasking the killer may be quite a challenge. It’s up to you to determine which partygoer is guilty, bring this crime to justice, and save the party!

Attend the Billionaires’ Club Annual Masquerade Ball and help get this soiree back on track by trading clues with your guests, gathering information, and solving the crime before the masked menace gets away! Evening wear, ball gowns, Venetian masks, suits, and tuxes are what to wear to this high class night of masks and murder. Get ready for a glamorous evening of mystery, intrigue and, murder.

There are several different types of tickets to purchase including General Admission and Early Access (the price differential allows earlier access).  We had the Gold Circle Access, which includes preferential seating, a “Mugshot Momento Set”, and 30 minutes early access.  All ticket levels include the show and a three course dinner (drinks not included).  We really liked our seats because we were right in the middle of the action, directly in the area where most of the improv takes place.

To have the most fun, you have to participate.  Each table has a person who will be directly involved in the action, meaning they will play an actual character in the mystery that will need to be solved by the end of the evening.  There are books at each table with clues for your table’s character, and the “money” at each table will be used to purchase clues from other tables to help solve the mystery.  Tables have “investigation” time where your table can interact with any other table or their characters, and each table has a scribe who will ensure your clues are documented.  At the end, all tables turn in their “whodunit”, and the winning table gets bragging rights for solving the mystery.

We really enjoyed the direct involvement of the improv actors, who never break character throughout the performance.  As I mentioned previously, you will have the most fun if you are active with your table, and get up and really roam around to get the definitive clues you need to solve the mystery.  I won’t give away too much because it’s really something that you have to enjoy for yourself.  Deon and I already know from this experience that it makes for a great date night, but I think it would make for a great “Girls/Guys Night Out” or even family night if you have kids who are old enough to participate.  I’ve included some pictures from the evening, including our “mugshots”.  Thank you to The Murder Mystery Company for adding a great alternative for a night out in San Diego!

Santa Is Waiting For YOU at Fashion Valley!

thumb_IMG_9762_1024

This Saturday marked our third year taking pictures with Santa at Fashion Valley’s Santa Photo Experience.  This was by far the easiest year yet because we got his photos completed in the first week of December (rather than the third), and we did it by appointment straightaway, not having to brave the line at all!  I’m so glad we did because even with our appointment, we still were able to sneak in a bit early because we had the very first appointment at 10:35 am.  We finished with his photo within about 10 minutes, and were able to get in an early day of shopping, eating and enjoying the holiday sights at Fashion Valley.  I ended up choosing the “Photo Package Plus Accessory” plan, which really provided the best choice for the price (which included the multi-image CD).  To help save time when you visit the Santa Photo Experience, click the following link to make your reservation!

Testing Out Warby Parker’s “Home Try-On” Program

IMG_8329

At the beginning of September, I shared Warby Parker’s new fall 2015 collection (post here).  Recently, I used their “Home Try-On” program to see which of my favorite fall collection picks would look the best on me.  I posted my looks on Instagram (which links to my personal Facebook page), just to see what my friends, family and followers thought.  It’s great because you have five days to try on the glasses, make your selection (I chose to take it to social media), then return them right in the same package they came in (a return label is enclosed).  So simple and easy!

IMG_8355

My choices:  1) “Caspar” in Jet Black; 2) “Percey” in Scarlet Tortoise; 3) “Simone” in Blue Coral; 4) “Holcomb” in Pearled Tortoise; 5) “Simone” in Tea Rose Fade

IMG_8776

The votes were pretty clear: “Simone” in both the Blue Coral and Tea Rose Fade were the winners (even Warby Parker themselves commented on Instagram).  My sister took pictures of me and my niece having fun with the “Home Try-On” samples.  I think it’s a great way to ensure you choose the right Warby Parker frames, just for you!

My Dream Workspace

My Dream Workspace

My Dream Workspace by any2ndnow

Lately, I’ve been thinking about creating a better workspace at home.  Should it be in the bedroom, or should it be in a common area, especially with a growing boy who will need a larger space to do homework in the future?  I was inspired by WeWork to think of my dream workspace and what would it include.  If you are unfamiliar with WeWork, they create beautiful shared workspaces that build community and inspire through togetherness.  They have office spaces all over the world, including the US and London (check out their amazing space at Aldgate Tower).

My dream workspace would incorporate art and music, as well as functionality and comfort.  I absolutely love the space in the picture above, because it looks like it leads to a common area, which we have in our family room at home.  I want to move my husband’s turntables to our room and get a decorative, yet functional record player to be placed aside a large shelf for our growing record collection.  We would have a desk for the computer, and a drafting table that could double as another desk when needed (as we have a couple of laptops).  I could also level the drafting table to hold my mini-lighting studio to use for product pictures.  Finally, I’ve also always wanted a beautiful chaise lounge, which would add to the modern vintage feel of my ideal workspace.  I would then sprinkle the walls with our favorite music and movie posters.  If it all works out to be as visually appealing as it is functional, the “office” could also be used as a backdrop for outfit posts!

Thank you WeWork for helping me really put some thought into my ideal workspace.  Now, how do I convince my mother that we need to move the china cabinet into another room…

Minted: Unique (and Adorable) Journals & Planners!

A Little Paris NotebookI really love a great journal or planner.  Before I was blogging, I was definitely writing in journals (see my post about it here), so it’s no wonder that anytime I’m in a bookstore, stationery shop, or even a large chain retail store like Target, I’ll usually stop by the paper goods section to see if there’s anything cute.

Imagine my excitement when I was introduced to Minted, an online stationery store that is also a design marketplace.  They source fantastic creative content from a global community of independent artists and sell the best designs on paper goods, art and home decor.  For instance, check out that lovely journal in the picture above called “A Little Paris” by artist Sharon Rowan.  When you select your item, you can click on the link to get to know the artist, as well as see other items they have designed for Minted.

Planner Journal Options for MintedWhat I like the best about their journals and planners are the options provided.  Even though I’ve selected a weekly planner, I can also order a matching journal, which all can be personalized through color selection and by adding your name or even uploading your personal pictures (depending on the type of cover selected)! Additionally, the options change, depending on what kind of product you want.  I love stickers, so it’s great that once you choose the planner option, the stickers then become available.

A Little Paris Notebook stickers

There are so many products to choose from, including personalized name labels that are waterproof, dishwasher safe and non-toxic, which is perfect for when Dominic goes to school.  Since school starts in about a month for him, I’m definitely going to have a great time browsing through the site and seeing all the great products for the both of us at Minted!

(Also, if you like what you see as far as journals and planners, here’s a direct link to their collection:  http://www.minted.com/journals)

#SaveTheSparkle: What Happens AFTER The Wedding?

IMG_6671

I was recently asked by Wayfair.com to share a story on how I continue to #SaveTheSparkle with my wedding and engagement rings, especially now that it’s well after the nuptual events.  I actually wear my rings daily and only take them off at home because of chores that involve water like laundry, washing dishes or bathing our son.  If I do have to clean anything using abrasives, I’m wearing gloves. This keeps cleaning my rings to a minimum, and they shine just as brightly as they did when we first got engaged and then married.

But I think #SaveTheSparkle can also apply to how we keep the sparkle in our marriage alive, and we do it by taking the time to incorporate what we love to do individually, into something we can do together.  For instance, the picture collage above is from this weekend, where we celebrated our eighth wedding anniversary.  My husband, Deon, had a golf tournament on our actual anniversary.  So we had my mom watch our boy and had a mini-holiday to celebrate our anniversary a day early with a lovely dinner out at a restaurant in Irvine, close to the golf course where he would play the following day.  This way, we still celebrated together, and he gets to do something he loves.  While at his tournament, I took the time to roam around Irvine and Costa Mesa, found an awesome record shop and got in some shopping.  I then had a quick dinner and read a book until it was time to pick up my tournament winning husband (see his winning result here)!  We were so happy at the end of our weekend because no matter what, spent it together.  We continue to do just that, turn events like his amateur golf tournaments (or golf playing in general) into full weekends, either alone as a couple or with our son.  In fact, they’ve become fun adventures, and you can find a few of them right here on my blog (like here, here and here)!

How do YOU #SaveTheSparkle?  Share your story in the comments below, or check out the hashtag to see how others are saving the sparkle!

GREY Book Review: Inside the Mind of Christian Grey

IMG_6274Yes, I’ve read it, but here’s the really silly back story of how it happened (before I get to my review):  I pre-ordered two copies of GREY, one from Target and the other from Amazon, in case one would arrive faster than the other.  Realizing I wouldn’t be able to read the paperback copy until after the release date, I pre-ordered a digital copy from Google Play at $2 off the listed price ($7.99).  I patiently waited until 9:00 pm PST, thinking since it was midnight in the East Coast I could download my copy.  Since that didn’t happen, I waited until midnight PST, but still no dice for some reason.  I frantically trolled Twitter and Instagram and found out that I wasn’t the only one having trouble getting their pre-paid copy from Google Play, so I just bit the bullet and downloaded it from iBooks onto my iPhone 6.  Halleluiah!

Now that I’ve gotten my first day release follies out-of-the-way, I’m going to explain why I enjoyed GREY, addressing some of the points of view of people who didn’t find this offering favorable, which are based on the following reviews from Entertainment Weekly and The New York Post:

Review Roundup: Christian Grey is a predictable psychopath in E.L. James ‘Grey’ (From Entertainment Weekly)

The best worst Amazon reviews for grey (From The New York Post)

Know Your Audience

Frankly, I’m not shocked at the less than stellar reviews.  But as Erika James has mentioned in the dedication page of the book, it’s written for fans who asked for it.  We were given a tease in Fifty Shades Freed, so of course we wanted more.  Fan fiction just wasn’t cutting it for me because it wasn’t from the true author.  As a fan of the trilogy and now the movie, I was thrilled to hear about this newest version from Christian Grey’s point of view.  It is very clearly stated on the cover of the book: “Fifty Shades of Grey as told by Christian”.  Anyone disappointed by the fact that it’s the same plot, the same story and some of the same dialogue has missed the whole point of this book.  There is nothing new about this book, except that we get to know Christian better.

No New Sex Scenes

Most of FSOG was Ana’s sexual and emotional development and discovery with Christian.  I would think Ana would have captured every single moment of her encounters, because I’m sure for her, every single one of them was significant as this was her first.  There shouldn’t be anything new, we just get to read what Christian is thinking, rather than Anastasia’s “Inner Goddess”.  Christian just tells it like it is, but with more of an “angel vs devil” dialogue.  I also like that Christian’s chapters are entitled as dates, as it gives us an indication of the time period of their initial romance, which shows what a difference a month can make.

“a cut-price Mr. Darcy with nipple clamps”

Oh dear, anyone who thinks Christian Grey is supposed to be the next literary hero needs to really re-examine who the audience is (again).  I’ve read Pride and Prejudice several times since I was a teen, and I own the BBC mini-series.  Not once did I compare these two characters.  Darcy was proud, but definitely not a Dominant.  Although arrogant, Christian Grey is emotionally broken, and Darcy was no such thing.  The only thing they have in common is wealth and the women that have gotten under their skin.  But really, what was the point of mentioning the two in any kind of review?  To emphasize the fact that this book wasn’t made for everyone?  I hardly think that Erika James was aiming that high, or that possibly FSOG would be on Masterpiece Theater in the near future, flanked by the likes of Downton Abbey and Mr. Selfridge.

“is far too serious and for fans only”

DING DING DING!  As so adeptly stated by the intoxicated movie-version of Anastasia “You hit the hail on the ned…the head on the nail…”  Whether James just wanted to make additional money on her already successful trilogy or not, we – THE FANS – asked for this!  If I were her, I would have done the same.  Why write that teaser at the end of Freed if not to gauge if one day her audience would want more?  I knew Christian was supposed to be “dark”.  There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that we were supposed to infer through FSOG that there was more to Christian’s alternative lifestyle than just the kink.  Of course there was a tumultuous early childhood (we got a taste of it in the trilogy), and it was a very sad, full of neglect and abuse until he was rescued by the Grey family.  Now, we get a direct link right into his head, filled with nightmares about his youth and it isn’t flowery.  Did we really want it to be?

“I’m a creep”

I don’t think Christian Grey is a creep.  He lived a certain lifestyle that eliminated any courtship, where boundaries were set, matched, and played through contracts with hard and soft limits.  Women who were with him as submissives were at his beck and call, but Anastasia isn’t.  Ana confounds him, frustrates him, and turns him on like a light switch, so Christian is in very new emotional territory.  Since he was in a BDSM relationship from aged 15 to 21 and had no further experiences in college, of course this megalomania billionaire is fumbling over himself like a love-sick puppy with too much money at his disposal.  Looking back at past relationships that ended or people who tried to pursue me prior to my marriage, I realize that I now accept from my husband what I would have thought of as weird from someone else who I wasn’t attracted to.  At the base of it, Christian and Anastasia are attracted to each other.  If she wasn’t into him, then yes, Christian’s actions would be creepy and stalkerish, because he would be forcing himself upon someone who didn’t want to be with him.  But Ana does want to be with him.  They are their pushing limits together.  There is an electricity between them, and there wouldn’t be a story if there wasn’t.

“and we can confirm, it’s definitely worth the palm-twitching wait”

Grey first review: New Fifty Shades of Grey sequel is out and we’ve read every steamy page

The review above from the Mirror UK is the one I can identify with the most.  I am in league with legions of fans in that I loved GREY.  Christian doesn’t quite understand what he’s supposed do with these new emotions he experiences when Anastasia falls into his office for the first time.  Fans know that Christian sees a psychiatrist, but nothing is truly revealed until Darker and Freed.  But in GREY, we actually get to sit in a session with just Christian and the good Dr. Flynn, who tries to help guide Christian through these unfamiliar sensations.  Christian is the kind of guy who has order and control in his world, and feeling a true attraction for someone he hasn’t auditioned previously as a submissive is foreign to him.  His submissives fit an initial “type”, which is definitely Anastasia at first glance: brunette, pretty, not-so self-assured and almost “helpless”.  These are all traits Christian feels he can train as an apt pupil.  But we all know Ana is headstrong, and despite how much he tries to tell himself he can bring her to heel, he loves her ability to match him.

I like the struggle Christian feels when he thinks Ana should be proud of herself as he is for being so brave and strong in his Red Room.  Since Ana is not of the lifestyle, she is confused and feels the pain for what it is, not what Christian has convinced himself for it to be.  I have been invested in these characters since I read the books back in 2012 (my first review here), so I would definitely say whether or not if this book has lived up to my expectations.  I can say it has, and even had me crying towards the end, where we know they part.  Remember:  Christian’s submissives have contracts that end, and there was no room for feelings in those arrangements, or he ended them before they got there (or so he thought with Leila).  But there is always that one relationship that moves the core of who you are, and this has never happened in Christian’s world.  For once, he allows someone else to care enough to quell his nightmares, but it’s too much for him.  Because the feelings are incredibly powerful, he does what he knows best:  he sexually and physically overwhelms Ana, rather than confront that he might actually be in love with her.  Christian’s self-abhorrence comes out loud and clear, and through his inner dialogue, we discover he is a bit more insecure than he lets on.  We know Ana is the stronger of the two because she knows herself, and is trying to bring Christian into the light with her.

Will E.L. James will want to continue the saga in this way?  Would she risk releasing the rest of the trilogy from Christian’s POV, knowing there may be criticism for milking more from this obviously lucrative series?  Well, as a true “Fifty Fan Girl”, I’m with Anastasia:  I. Want. MORE.
