Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: H&M Conscious

IMG_0791 (2) (1280x1280)

After being sick for a few days earlier this week, my husband finally got me out of the house for some necessity shopping.  This included a trip to the grocery store and to our local mall.  We quickly stopped in at H&M before heading to Target, where I found an adorable sweatshirt (that cute number pictured above to go with my new YRU kitty flats) and some even cuter socks (not pictured).  I carry an H&M reusable bag with me everywhere as a quick “go to” bag for any kind of emergency, fashion or otherwise.  After being rung up, I asked the sales person to please use my reusable bag to house my new purchases.  He informed me that as a thank you for doing so, I received 15% off of my sweatshirt, and he gave me another coupon to use again on another item of my choice.  What a pleasant surprise!  H&M has made quite an effort to be a more sustainable company with their “H&M Conscious” campaign (I have a jacket from this line, worn here and here).  Like the discount I received for using my reusable bag, you can also receive coupons for taking part in their “Garment Collecting” initiative by bringing your used clothing to be repurposed to be either reworn, reused, or recycled (the stores have receptacles for the Garment Collecting).  I truly enjoyed receiving such a lovely little surprise for just my own small effort to be sustainable.  If you are shopping this weekend and find yourself near an H&M, maybe you can do the same.  Cheers!

(Note:  This is not a sponsored post, and I was not approached by H&M to endorse their “H&M Conscious” campaign.  I am simply impressed by their sustainable fashion efforts, and wanted to share my experience with the readers of Any Second Now.)

(Black) Friday, I’m in Love

I have been waiting to wear this lovely sweater coat I purchased on Etsy earlier this year, and Black Friday was the perfect day to wear it since the weather was sunny but very brisk.  These pictures were taken right after our excursion, and my sole acquisition of the day was that beautiful leather and suede purse from Topshop.  Being married to someone born and raised in Las Vegas allows me to see so many things outside of The Strip.  This is Charlie Frias Park (located on Tropicana Avenue and Decatur Boulevard), which is en route to The Strip, as is seen in the background of the pictures below.  Although we did visit The Strip to go Black Friday shopping at Fashion Show Mall, and to visit my cousin for her husband’s birthday, we primarily stay away from The Strip.  Las Vegas is quite lovely as a city, and I want my pictures on our frequent trips there to showcase what else Sin City has to offer.  My next outfit post and photos of Las Vegas will feature places even my husband never experienced, and it was fun for the entire family!

Just Like Honey

IMG_0199 (2) (854x1280)

It’s unusual for me to start off the week with an outfit post.  But it has been awhile since I’ve put one up (not one included in a fashion post), I thought I’d use one from a couple of weeks back as I’m still putting together my Thanksgiving posts, which was a mix of family, food and fun, with a little bit of fashion thrown in-between.  In the meantime, I wore this outfit to work a few weeks ago, then went to lunch at Denny’s with my sister and niece.  Since I’m on this honey kick, I had to try the Hobbit themed Honey Cake French Toast.  Instead of breakfast style, I had it a-la-mode after my main dish.  When I made the request, the waitress literally stopped writing on her notepad and said, “Oh my GOD, that sounds good!”  I had it again at another late night Denny’s run with my hubby, and the request elicited the same reaction.  I think I may be on to something!

Fashion Week San Diego: The Trunk Show

DSC03011 (2) (1280x960)

Here is the final post of my Fashion Week San Diego experience, the trunk show.  I really had a great time because it was a very relaxed vibe, and we got to meet many of the designers.  They announced the winning designers of #FWSD, and we got to partake in the celebration with several champagne toasts.  I also met up with a few of my blogger buddies at the show, and not only left with goodies courtesy of the #FWSD VIP gift bag, but I also made a purchase from Dexter Simmons, who will appear in the reality show Styled to Rock later this week.  I took pictures galore, but here are the highlights.  Hope you had a great weekend!

The man himself, Dexter Simmons!  He is such a nice guy, and it was nice to know he is definitely influenced by music in his designs. I wish I could have met Cecilia Aragon and Andre Soriano (who is from San Diego).  I will definitely be watching them this Friday on “Styled to Rock“!

Chequered Past

DSC02290 (2) (851x1280)

This is the outfit I wore for my 25th high school reunion, covered in the previous post.  I fell in love with this Made Fashion Week for Impulse dress when I saw it online on Macy’s site.  I actually bought it in Las Vegas, as I couldn’t find it out here in San Diego.  I immediately got a retro vibe from this dress, reminding me of my checked Vans back in the 80’s.  The faux pan-collar and pockets sealed the deal, and I bought the dress straight away.  I paired it with my fuchsia pumps for a pop of color and my new clear studded vegan purse.

Chequered Past was a group led by Michael Des Barres back in the 80’s.  They toured with Duran Duran during the tour I went to, but I can’t recall if I saw them.  However, The Power Station did tour back in 1985, so I did have the pleasure of seeing Michael Des Barres perform live.

Red Flag

DSC02284 (2) (854x1280)

Ever since I saw the beautiful outfits by Alex Yanez at the Fall Fashion Preview a couple of weekends ago, presented by Neiman Marcus at the Blogger Bruncheon (original post here), I have been obsessed with incorporating red into my wardrobe.  I’m so happy that fall is approaching, because I intend on finding a red suit to pair with my leopard print shoes, just like the outfit in the “Red, The New Neutral” portion of the fashion show.  In the meantime, I wore my red plaid pants to bring out the red of my new favorite purse: The Union Jack fringe tote from Bubbles Boutique.  I love that I can either carry it, or use it as a cross-body.  I wore many British items to accompany my new bag, including my London map ring and London Underground cuff.  Can you tell I miss London?

DSC02389 (2) (1280x1280)

I’m not sure how many of you out there remember the group Red Flag, but they began as a new wave synth-pop band back in the 80’s, originally from Liverpool, who eventually settled in San Diego.  I saw them play at UCSD for free when the “Broken Heart” single was released back in 1988, but I lost track of them after that.  They have since updated their sound to be darker and more electronic.  I hope they tour again, because I would love to see them in concert!

Check out my niece, Mei-Lin…how absolutely cool is she?  She’s always wearing my shoes and we love to do our nails together.  Yes it’s true, she has watched me take many an outfit picture, so I know many of these poses are compliments of moi.  But really, she is just a natural.  This is the outfit she wore on the first day of school this week (2nd grade), and she is on point with being “Rocker Chic”.  Mei-Lin is as smart as she is beautiful, and saying I’m a proud aunt is an understatement.

I know that doesn’t quite sound like a wedding outfit, but it describes all of the elements in the outfit I wore to my cousin Paul’s wedding a couple of weekends ago (in the previous post).  The top and skirt are separate pieces, which I’ve already worn with other outfits since the wedding.  The cardigan served well as the night got colder, but gave the outfit a retro feel when I draped it on my shoulders.  I love pieces that can easily be incorporated into the rest of my wardrobe, that way I can get more mileage out of them.  It is well documented how much I adore my hardware, but I love softening them by wearing the pieces with a very feminine outfit.

San Diego Style Bloggers at Old Navy

DSC02001 (2) (1280x1280)

This past Monday, I attended a “Blogger Night” event at Old Navy in the Fashion Valley Mall through San Diego Style Bloggers.  I’m always happy to attend these fun and fashionable events because I get to see my favorite SD Style Bloggers, in addition to meeting new blogger friends!  It was a great evening of styling ourselves, as well as customers who shopped that night.  I didn’t get a chance to style anyone myself, but I did watch my fellow bloggers put together some great outfits.  It was lovely to see Jess, Tuyaymya, and Alessandra again, in addition to meeting other San Diego Style Bloggers for the first time.  Below are some pictures of the event, plus a list of all the bloggers in attendance.  Hope you have a great weekend!

As you know from my outfit pictures, Old Navy is in heavy rotation in my wardrobe (check out posts here, here, here and here just to name a few).  Above are some hopefuls for my wardrobe!

Beat Surrender

DSC01888 (2) (854x1280)

I like to be comfortable when I go to a concert, but I don’t want to surrender my fashionista ways.  I once wore 4 inch heels to see Dave Gahan in concert, and although I loved my look, I ultimately paid the price in pain and inconvenience.  I was in pain because I’m one to stand for the majority of a show and by the fifth song, my feet were done.  Then it was inconvenient because there was a point where everyone rushed the stage during an encore, and trying to run down an incline of stairs in 4 in heels was almost not worth it, except that it was Dave Gahan and that would be the closest I would ever get to him, with or without Depeche Mode!  This is an outfit which would be perfect for me for any concert, from an outdoor festival to a seated event because it’s comfortable, it’s easy, and not fussy.  Although the shoes I’m wearing are heeled, they are wedged and low enough to be comfortable.  And what could be more convenient than a backpack?  I usually hesitate when it comes to backpacks, but this one is cute and functional.  This is definitely my concert bag of choice this summer.  Finally to complete the outfit, I can just play up the accessories, like wearing cool pieces of jewelry or don a hat.  Concert ready?  Why yes I am!
